JOHN MOTSON - MOTTY A superb collection of 20 scrapbooks covering the broadcasting career of legendary sports commentator John Motson. These scrapbooks, compiled by the Motson family, cover the period between 1968 and 2004 and include a multitude of personal and professional items, most of which are laid down . The early days include Journalism certificates, job offers from the BBC and print media, photographs, letters and telegrams from other commentators and a fascinating array of match tickets, media passes, airline tickets, programmes for a number of services of remembrance and many press cuttings relating to John. John has covered many sports and whilst football items are in the majority , numerous other sports are covered including tennis at Wimbledon, boxing, horse racing and the Olympics. Many Cup Final tickets are included, a Barnsley season ticket for 67-68 admitting the Sheffield Morning Telegraph, match tickets (too numerous to mention) from 1967 onwards including 68 Charity Shield at Man City, club games from 69/70 inc games at Chelsea, Tottenham and West Ham, boxing Cooper v Urtain 10/11/70, Bugner v Blin 71. Tickets from 70/71 include Arsenal at Man City and at Liverpool and there is a BEA ticket to Vienna 29/4/70 plus a match ticket for the Cup-Winners Cup Final, Man City v Gornik on that day in Vienna. There are BBC itineraries, BBC contracts, letters of congratulation and appreciation from the BBC and their senior personnel, invitations for the BBC Sports Review of the Year (numerous of these from 1971 onwards), Wimbledon tickets and media passes for the tennis championships, , ticket for Hereford v Newcastle 5/2/72, Cup (remember "that goal"), match tickets for many England games home and away including media passes, 1972 Olympics Identity card, Footballer of the Year Dinner Menus including 1974, 75, 76, 78, 79, 3 x First Day Covers from the 1974 World Cup plus 3 match tickets including the World Cup Final, 9 x Media match tickets 1974 World Cup, European Cup Final tickets 1978 and 1980, , music concert tickets for concerts attended by John including Don McLean, Rolling Stones 1976, Paul Simon 1980 , 87 and others, Cliff Richard 89 and Paul McCartney 90. Other items include Fulham Cup Final Dinner Menu 1975, 76 Olympics Pass, ticket for the 1976 Euros Cup Final in Belgrade plus tickets for Euro 80, 84 and 88, Argentina v England 77 ticket plus other England away tickets including TV gantry passes, 8 x World Cup 82 tickets, 10 tickets for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina plus a flight ticket to Buenos Aires and a fixture schedule, FA Itinerary for the June 79 tour, Arsenal itinerary for the ECWC Final v Valencia, Aer Lingus Menu for the flight taking Liverpool to Lisbon for the game at Benfica 1/3/78, ticket for Wigan v Tranmere 16/8/78, League Cup (first competitive game played by Wigan as a League club), 5 x Copa De Oro 80 tickets in Uruguay (tournament included Holland, Germany, Italy and Brazil etc). Tickets for many Cup Semi-Finals including Hillsborough 89, World Cup 86 accreditation and 8 tickets for World Cup 1998 in France. These are just some examples of the broad coverage of the scrapbooks covering over 35 years of Motty and they are fascinating to browse through. The large majority of items are laid down and the scrapbooks are large and in generally good condition. This is the sporting life of a TV legend with a good number of more personal items included and they are a delight to browse through with many more items included than those noted above.
