SIR JAMES JEBUSA SHANNON R.A., R.B.A., R.H.A. 1862-1923 Henry Vigne, "Master of the Epping Forest Harriers" 1887 Full length portrait, oil on canvas, framed H.230 x W.136cm Provenance: Property of Patrick d'Olier Vigne, Great Great Grandson of John Vigne, first cousin of Henry Vigne. Painted in 1887 as reported by various art critics at the time and presented to Henry Vigne in 1890 as depicted in the title bar as a celebration of the 1889/90 hunting seasons. Biography of the artist: Generally considered a collectors artist because of the waves he made during his career and his many accolades while studying at the South Kensington School (later to become the Royal College of Art), including the school's gold prize, which prompted two commissions from Queen Victoria. He wasn't a conventional artist, always trying new methods and never devoted to any one school or association. He lived and worked among a colony of artists at Wentworth Studios, Chelsea, along with La Thangue, Frank Brangwyn and William Llewellyn. These artistic friendships among the Royal Academy reformers were forged in the wake of the first New English Art Club exhibition at which Shannon showed in 1886. Shannon had received a number of favourable reviews throughout the early-to-mid 1880's, however, it was not until 1888 that Shannon truly arrived as an artist, mainly as a result of two paintings shown at the prestigious Grosvenor Gallery. The first was "Henry Vigne, Master of the Epping Forest Harriers 1887". The portrait earned Shannon the status of hors concours when it was shown at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1889. As one critic proclaimed at the time, the picture confirms the report that a fresh candidate is about to dispute the profits of realistic portrait painting with Mr. Sargent, Mr. Herkomer [Hubert von Herkomer, 1849 - 1914], and Mr. Holl [Frank Holl, 1845 - 1888]". James Jebusa Shannon was knighted in 1923 by King George V for his work for the arts.

Hailed by its maker as, "the world's best convertible", the Azure lived up to that grand title, proving an immense success especially in North America where its combination of unmatched luxury, effortless performance, and soft-top style was found highly attractive. From 1999 until the end of production, the Azure was also available in Mulliner 'Wide Body' specification. Introduced at the 1999 Geneva Motor Show, the aggressive-looking Mulliner could be ordered with special bespoke trim and additional equipment and permitted the buyer the option of further customisation during the build process. Pricing varied by car, as equipment could be significantly different from one to the next depending on customer requirements. For the Azure Mulliner, Bentley's 6.75-litre V8 engine was up-rated, producing a maximum of 420bhp and 645lb/ft of torque, while the suspension was stiffened to improve the road-holding. When production ceased in 2003 a total of 1,403 Azures of all types had been built, of which only 154 were Mulliner 'Wide Body' models and just 23 in right-hand drive. Albert Edward" - The Prince expressed himself particularly pleased with the appearance of the children, thoroughly approving the action of the Guardians in not providing them with a charity garb and in sending them to elementary schools in the town. * Brunel (Marc Isambard, 1769-1849). Autograph letter signed, Chelsea, 13 October 1816, to Viscount Keith at Purbrook near Portsmouth, offering to put up a saw mill, but advising Keith against the scheme because of the high duty on timber, 'The industry that might be brought in this country by a trifling alteration in the duties is truly great; yet it is overlooked by Government, to the great detriment of the Scotch interest in particular. I have erected a saw mill at Leith; but to the great loss of the proprietors who had common mills there before. Had the duties been laid on fir timber as it happens, probably by chance, to be on oak timber there then would be certain imployment in this country for thousands of families...', then discussing the disadvantages of imported timber, two pages with integral address leaf, freefront stamp and seal tear, a little creased, 4toQty: (1)NOTESThe destruction of Brunel's own saw mills at Battersea led to his imprisonment for debt.
