The Destroyers commenced their return trip but at 4.30 in the afternoon a massive explosion tore through the midship area of H.M.S Laforey and she instantaneously broke in half, the stern with much of the weight of the propulsion gear promptly sank. The bows remained afloat for long enough for the H.M.S Laertes to rescue only 18 of the 77 crew complement.
