William de Morgan (1839 - 1917) - Autograph letter from de Morgan , dated March 30th 1904, Central Florence, Italy to Messers Morris & Company in response to an enquiry about the use of leadless glazes in his pottery. Note: The letter starts Dear Sirs, Mr Ewbank (de Morgans foreman at the time) writes me from Fulham that a customer of yours (Morris & co) has enquired if we are using "leadless glazes". He goes on to state that 25 years earlier at least "half my men where lead - poisoned in the Chelsea and I determined either to put an end to poisonous glazes or to give up business all together. The remainder of the letter deals with his way of overcoming this hazardous problem. Note : Bonham's, London sold a series of eight autographed letters to H. C. Marillier, managing director of Morris & Co 1907-1914, on 22nd November 2011 (Lot 50)
