Emily Young (British, born 1951)Poet Warrior Purbeck freestone80 cm. (31 1/2 in.) high (including the stone base)Carved in 2000Footnotes:ProvenanceThe Artist, from whom acquired directly by the present ownerPrivate Collection, U.K.'Britain's greatest living stone sculptor' (Financial Times, 2013)Emily Young was born into a creative family in London, her grandmother was the sculptor Kathleen Scott, a colleague of Auguste Rodin and her uncle Sir Peter Scott started the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in 1961. She began her career as a painter, studying at Chelsea School of Art and Central St Martins in London before travelling extensively, but by the 1980s she had started to carve stone, a medium she has since dedicated herself to for the last forty years.Young practices 'free sculpture', where she approaches each block of stone with no pre-conceived ideas or preparatory drawings but rather allows the material to speak and guide the form that emerges. Using that most ancient of mediums, her unique vision is at once contemporary and antique. The monumental heads are Michelangelesque in their organic emergence from the rock, part polished, part rough-hewn, with each example wholly individual as the stone itself dictates the final outcome with every fault, vein and split celebrated rather than concealed. The artist's lifelong preoccupation with humanity and our troubled relationship with the planet is clear and these still, dignified forms invite private reflection from the viewer, looking both to our past and our future. Youngs sculpture is held in many public and private collections around the globe and she has exhibited at prestigious institutions including The Getty, California, the Imperial War Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. We are grateful to the Artist and EY Sculpture UK Ltd for their assistance in cataloguing the present work. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: AR TPAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium.TP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Lot 163

1963 Bentley S3 Transmission: automaticMileage:94729The last Bentley to be built on a separate chassis, 1962 saw the introduction of the Bentley S3 factory bodied, standard steel saloon and, at first glance, it would appear that the all new S3 was merely an S2 with different headlamps. The introduction of the twin headlamps was clearly the most obvious change, but the differences did not end there. Further changes included the introduction of smaller bumper overriders and the repositioning of the front indicators and side lamps into one single unit on the front wing, resulting in a more attractive appearance. The S3's interior now had individual front seats in place of the split bench seat found in the earlier S-Types and some, like this one, had electric windows and front seat belts. Mechanically speaking the S3 was the same as the S2 with a 6230cc, Rolls-Royce V8 engine and automatic gearbox but this model was fitted with larger carburettors, improved power steering to aid smoother movement at parking speed and a Lucas vacuum-advance distributor to aid fuel consumption, making it almost identical in mechanical specification to the S3 Continental that was being produced at the same time. On 11th February 1963 this beautiful example of the marque was supplied new with the electric window option by Bristol Motors Co. Ltd. to Mr. F.G. Pratten. In 1990, the well-known marque specialist, Chelsea Workshop sold the car to a gentleman who took and stored the car at his family home near St. Tropez in the South of France; upon its return to the UK 20 years later he gave the car back to Chelsea Workshop and instructed them to renovate the Bentley, cost for which amounted to £60,000. Part of the renovation was to repaint the car in the original colour of Masons Black whilst retaining the original Tan leather interior and fit a very discreet air conditioning system. Mechanically the car was completely gone through including a brake overhaul, front suspension overhaul including replacing the front road springs, re-tempering the rear springs, overhauling the power steering ram, replacing PAS hoses and carrying out a full 24,000 mile service. Since all this work has been done the car has covered a mere 3,700 miles and looks, runs and drives as it did when it came out of Chelsea Workshop. The current owner purchased the Bentley in 2015, again from Chelsea Workshop; he lived almost next door to them and used the car as his local transport around London. This Bentley S3 is supplied with UK V5C registration document and a file containing copies of the chassis cards supplied by the R.R.E.C. and the MoT history confirming the mileage. Here is a fantastic opportunity to buy one of the best, post war Bentleys that can still be used as an 'everyday motor car'.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

Lot 228

1993 Bentley Turbo RL Transmission: automaticMileage:26000The manufacture of the Bentley Turbo R began in 1985 and, in total, 7230 units of this model were produced during its 12 year production period. The 'R' stood for 'Road-holding' to set it apart from its predecessor, the Mulsanne, courtesy of substantially stiffer anti-roll bar settings, a Panhard rod system and increased damping. Wider tyres on alloy wheels were also a first for a Bentley on the Turbo R, which looked great. The suspension changes transformed the soft ride of the Mulsanne into that of a real performer with the motoring press proclaiming this model to be more faithful to Bentley's racing pedigree. In 1995, a 'new' Turbo R was launched featuring, amongst other things, fuel injection. This contributed towards a mighty 385bhp output which resulted in terrific performance outpacing any smaller ‘hot hatch’ at that time! This stunning long wheel base example of the Turbo R is presented in black with cream hide and boasts just one owner from its registration on 7th July 1993. Between 1993 and 1998 the car was used as his daily transport and the last service in June 1998 by Jack Barclay displayed a mileage of just 23,296. Shortly thereafter the car was stored in a specialist car storage facility as the owner had relocated overseas and used sporadically when the owner visited the UK. There is no paperwork between 1998 and February 2006 when the next invoice shows the mileage on a new odometer of 0098 shortly after its replacement. We are informed that the client only used the car in central London when visiting the UK and thus we believe the mileage is likely sub 30,000 and probably around 25-26,000 which is also indicated by those who have inspected the car, as well as the pristine condition of the interior which is almost ‘as new’. Between 2006 and 2008 the Chelsea Workshop cared for the car, but since then the car has remained unused in long term storage. To bring the car back into commission considerable work was carried out over the last 18 months to the engine and running gear by various engineers including Bentley specialists Hillier and Hill. With little predicted future use the vendor now wishes to pass this low mileage example to the next owner. Within the history file are numerous invoices and the original book pack, MoT certificates including current until September 2022 and UK V5C certificate. A low mileage, one owner car which will undoubtably attract significant interest from collectors and enthusiasts.*Odometer reading is an estimate based on an odometer change please see descriptionInterested parties should note that the V5 for this lot has been misplaced and the vehicle will be sold without this document, the new owner will need to apply for a V5 using a V62 form from the DVLA.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

Gouyn helped Nicholas Sprimont set up the Chelsea Porcelain Factory. But in about 1748 Gouyn severed his links with Sprimont and the Chelsea Porcelain Factory and set out to compete with his own 'Girl-in-a Swing' manufactory, so called after a figure in the V&A which has given its name to a whole class of similar porcelain figures. Gouyn's factory also made small scent bottles, etc usually with gold or gilt metal mounts collectively known as 'toys'. Some 'Girl-in-a-Swing' products appear to imitate Chelsea porcelain models and vice versa.
