WILLI SOUKOP R.A. [1907-95]. Man and Woman, 1963-5. bronzes x 2, unique - maquettes for life-size sculptures commissioned by London Transport and erected outside their head quarters in St James's Park, London in 1965. signed and dated.27 and 25 cm high. They can be exhibited as is or mounted on a wall [hanging brackets on reverse]. Provenance: Sothebys auction, 23.11.2006, lot 1977; private collection, UK. For many years Soukop was the most interesting sculptor showing at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions - a very underrated sculptor, who modelled and carved. Elisabeth Frink and Robert Clatworthy applied to Chelsea College of Art at the same time: the naturally talented Clatworthy got straight in, but the principal thought Frink's work was 'awful' and rejected her until Soukop, who taught sculpture there, stepped in and offered to take her in under his wing. [very good condition - a bit dusty and time toned]. Buyers premium of 20% + VAT is payable.

Lot 36

ROBERT CLATWORTHY R.A. [1928-2015]. Dog 1, 1966. bronze, edition of 8, 4/8; signed RC. 26 cm long. Provenance: The artist; Private collection, UK. Literature: 'Robert Clatworthy', 2012, Sansom, p. 115, pl. RC82. Clatworthy is, in our opinion, the greatest modern sculptor of animals [obviously, Marino Marini's Horse & Riders are also superb] - he worked very quickly in wet plaster putting an enormous amount of life into the sculptures. According to the great art critic David Sylvester, he was the greatest sculptor he had seen since Henry Moore. Hanover Gallery, perhaps the greatest gallery in Europe in the 1950s, took on Clatworthy straight out of art college in 1953, in preference to Frink [they studied together at Chelsea School of Art] ! Please note: there is a Clatworthy bronze Bull later on in the auction.[very good condition - a bit of dust]. Buyers premium of 20% + VAT is payable.
