[GORDON CHARLES]: (1833-1885) British Army officer and administrator, known as Chinese Gordon. GORDON HENRY W. (1818-1887) British Commissary-General, served in the Crimean War. Elder brother of Charles Gordon. An excellent A.L.S., H. W. Gordon, four pages, 8vo, Chelsea, 10th February 1885, to [Sir Thomas Francis?] Wade. Gordon thanks his correspondent for their sympathy ‘and for all you say about my Brother’ and continues ‘It is a sad state of suspense to be in, and we think it not likely to be put an end to for some time. I cannot believe he is holding out. I cannot see how he could do so since the Rebels have artillery. He must, in my opinion, have yielded from famine combined with treachery….he told Wolseley he had only 40 days provisions’ and further commenting ‘One curious thing is that Wilson did not speak of seeing steamers at Kartoum (sic) of which there ought to have been some eight or ten. Probably Gordon sent away the Egyptian families to the Equator. I don’t think that if taken alive, the Madhi would kill him.’ A letter of remarkable content. Two very small, extremely minor traces of former mounting to the upper two corners of the final page, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG Gordon’s letter is written less than a week after the first telegraphic rumours of his brother’s death had reached England. On 24th January 1885 two steamers carrying British soldiers of the Sussex Regiment (wearing clearly identifiable red tunics) were sent on a reconnaissance mission to Khartoum, with orders from Field Marshal Garnet Wolseley not to attempt to rescue Gordon or deliver ammunition or food. In the evening of the same day the Mahdi met with his generals who advised that, with the Nile low and Wolseley close, the time was right to either storm Khartoum or retreat. At dawn on the morning of 26th January 1885 the Ansar began their final attack by storming the city. After just an hour of fighting the starved defenders had abandoned the fight and Khartoum was theirs. The Ansar took no prisoners and all of the approximately 7000 defenders were killed. On arriving at Khartoum on 28th January, the relief force discovered that the city had been captured and Gordon had been killed two days earlier.
