David Smith RE (1920-1999) British 20th Century, Antarctica, oil on board, signed bottom right, dated 1984, framed. Measurements 24.3 x 29.5cm, framed measurements 36.8 x 42cm David Smith (1920-1999) was a British expressionist painter and printmaker from Lowestoft, Suffolk. Smith served in the RAF during the Second World War Smith studied at the Slade School of Art and went on to teach as Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at the Chelsea School of Art. In 1951 he was elected RE. He is best known for his work as the official artist on board two British Antarctic surveys in 1975-1976 and 1979-1980. His work inspired by these two extended voyages is celebrated for his skill in expressing an intensity of colour across a pristine polar desert and was exhibited at the Commonwealth Institute. Following the success of his Antarctic series, he was commissioned by Trinity House to record all the lighthouses of England and Wales, fitting in with his belief in the documentary role of an artist.

Graham Sutherland (1903-1980) British 20th Century, Sea Wall ii, signed bottom left and dated '39, inscribed with title and dated 26 V 39, watercolour, pencil and crayon on paper. Measurements 39 x 29cm (SH). Note: This piece is likely to have been a preparatory study for Sutherland's final painting 'Gorse on a Sea Wall' 1939 which is now located in the Ulster Museum. Graham Sutherland (1903-1980) British 20th Century, was one of the most influential British artists of the 20th Century. Born in Steatham, London, Sutherland studied at the Goldsmiths School of art, specialising in engraving and etching and then spent many years teaching at the Chelsea School of Art. Printmaking, predominantly raomantic landscapes, dominated his work during the 1920s, drawing inspiration from artists such as Samuel Palmer. He later switched to oil painting during his 30s following the collapse of the printmaking industry during the Great Depression and it was his surrealist abstract landscape compositions that secured his reputation as an international modern artist. Together with his close friend Francis Bacon, Sutherland was one of the main figureheads for surrealist painting in Britain. His landscapes covey haunted atmospheres that attempted to express the concept of brutality present within nature.

Charles Dyson Smith (British, 1891-1960), Autumn landscape, 39 x 50cm; Sheep on downland, 32 x 39cm; and Turning hay, 31 x 39cm, the first signed lower right "Dyson Smith '49, oils on board (3) Note: English artist Charles William Dyson-Smith was born in 1891. He received formal art training as a painter and sculptor at the Royal Academy Schools in London from 1921 when he was awarded the Landseer Scholarship for sculpture. Between the years of 1927 and 1940 he had a number of studios in Chelsea and Fulham, London. He was an Associate member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors from 1936 until 1938 when became a fellow. He remained a fellow until 1949 and served as a member of their council during the Second World War from 1943 to 1945. Dyson Smith was active as a sculptor until 1951 and he died in 1960. In 1962 Christie's held a sale selling the contents of his studio. His style epitomises the Art Deco movement sweeping across Europe during the 1930s. Autumn landscape frame has chips. A little surface dirt. All in original 1930s frames.
