Great War Multiple signed Early RAF. Bachelor's Farewell Dinner and Concert to Henry Joseph Starr, Corporal, RAF. 11 Oct 1918. From his colleagues at RN Airship Station, Polgate. 26 signatures (most identified whilst writing up this note). An attractive and scarce item that is worthy of research. Polgate was the UK's second airship station. part of the Dover Command, was built at Willingdon with the entrance at the Triangle, the present-day junction with Coppice Avenue. It was named Polegate as it was the practice to name bases after the nearest Railway Station, although the entire area was within the parish of Willingdon. Building work commenced in early 1915 and on 6 July that year it was commissioned with one SS airship which made its first flight that day and was soon joined by others. These airships patrolled our waters daily, between Dungeness and Portland Bill, searching for U boats and mines which they could destroy with their bombs. They also accompanied military convoys and hospital ships, which brought casualties home from the front and would radio Morse code to warn these vessels of any imminent danger. Autographs include Matthew John Golightly (238982) Born 20 Mar 1891 at Portsea. ADM 188/424/238982 and AIR 76/186/0/0121 downloaded. Married Florence Grace Larence in 1932 at Portsmouth. Unfortunately, on the 20th of December 1917, while trying to return to base in fog, his airship ran into another one that was anchored in a field. Both airships caught fire and Victor and the engineer jumped out, landing in a snow-covered field. Both were badly injured but survived however, the pilot remained in the airship and died when it crashed to the ground. (Google "The Polegate Airship Disaster" for the full story).
