An original WWI First World War Death Plaque / Commemorative Plaque for one Robert John Jarvis. KIA during the first few days of the German Spring Offensive, in March 1918. Along with a photograph of Jarvis' grave at a War Cemetery. Robert John Jarvis was born in the 1st quarter of 1898 at Uphill, near Weston super Mare, the son of Robert William Jarvis and Mary Ellen Jarvis (née Marshall). He first features in the 1901 Census, when he was three years old and one of two children living with the family at Uphill. By the time of the 1911 Census, Robert John Jarvis was thirteen years old and at school. The family were still living at Uphill (2 Arch Villa).... (he was) The third Somerset bellringer to die during the Kaiserschlacht. 307300 Private Robert John Jarvis of the 2/7th Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment), who died of wounds on the 24th March 1918, aged 20. Jarvis was also a bellringer at Uphill (Somerset) and a member of the Bath and Wells Diocesan Association of Change Ringers. Private Robert John Jarvis died of wounds on the 24th March 1918, aged 20. He is now buried in London Cemetery, Neuville-Vitasse, south of Arras. The CWGC records available on their website show that the body of Private Jarvis was one of many graves that were concentrated at London Cemetery after the end of the war. The map co-ordinates on his burial record (51B.L.10.b.0.7) confirm that Jarvis had originally been buried in Erchin German Cemetery, which was some miles behind the German lines. dating: Second half of the 18th Century provenance: Germany, Wide, straight, single-and-false-edged blade with slight fuller under the back and thin back groove, the right side with inscription at the base 'Ein Jäger unverdrossen hat manches wild geschossen' among floral motifs, higher up a hound following a deer, on the other side a hunter among floral motifs and higher up another hunting scene. Iron hilt with small shell guard, straight quillons, an arch curved towards the blade forming an 'S' with the loop guard, both the ends and centre of the loop guard decorated with metal studs, remains of gilding. Handle with deer horn grips and long ring nut. Remains of browning. Leather-covered wooden scabbard (restorations and defects) provided with two tools with deer horn grips. length 74 cm.
dating: 16th-18th Century provenance: Ottoman Empire, Made of wood, hand-painted with copper-colored floral motifs on a dark background (various missing parts). Apparently, the arch was painted in gold and then, at later times, was repainted with the pattern that can be seen mainly at the center, inside and at the ends. Original stringing with remains of reinforcement. length 99 cm.
