It then goes on to praise the English government, and thanks the Queen for gifts including 'marvellous rarities and wondrous cloths' (nafayes-e 'ajibeh va aqmesheh-ye 'gharibeh), made by English craftsmen. Just two registered keepers, 28,425 miles from new and delightfully original. It was back in 1970 that Ford introduced their Rally Sport models - the RS range. Originally designed as a way of building limited numbers of homologation specials for serious competition use, it soon grew into a major marketing opportunity and one that Ford grabbed with both hands. By 1976, when the RS2000 Mk2 was launched, the term RS had grown to mean something a bit special.In late 1978, the 'Custom Pack' became an option and included the following; 'Fishnet' Recaro seats, full door cards, clock and pod centre console, 6J x 13" alloys, boot carpet, remote drivers door mirror and the back panel around the rear lights was painted black.The key word to describe this car is originality. It still retains all the original body panels and glass and has been looked after extraordinarily well throughout its life. Although it has been cherished by a number of aficionados with an eye for originality, astonishingly it still shows as only 'One former keeper'. Our respected Ford collector vendor acquired the car back in 2021 and has professionally housed it ever since within his Collection and unregistered to him. Showing just 28,425 miles from new, a figure that is corroborated by the car’s MOT history, it drives really well today and is surely one of the best unrestored examples available. Very well known multi Championship-winning Twin-Cam now returned to pristine condition, with a remarkable restoration. By the time the Escort first came out in 1968, Ford were already firmly wedded to the marketing strategy of 'win on Sunday, sell on Monday' and were keenly aware that they would need a race/rally version to take over from where the mighty Lotus Cortina had left off. To this end, Ford’s Boreham-based competition department had been quietly beavering away on a Lotus-powered Escort that was ready to roll as soon as the standard models hit the showrooms. Called the 'Twin Cam', the hot new Escort immediately excelled on the international race and rally circuits, winning countless events and securing Ford the coveted World Rally Championship manufacturer’s trophy in its first year of production, a feat which it also repeated the following year.Introduced in 1968 in very limited numbers for homologation purposes, the Escort Twin-Cam is now one of Ford's most revered cars and still regarded as a formidable road car. Based on a reinforced Type 49 body shell with wider wheel arches, quarter bumpers, uprated suspension and front disc brakes as standard, it was powered by a Lotus-designed, 8-valve twin camshaft head mated to Ford’s 1.5-litre pre-crossflow block bored out to 1,558cc offering 110bhp and 115mph. Only 883 Twin-Cam models were made before production ended in 1970 to make way for the BDA-powered RS1600. The car presented here is a very special Twin Cam - NBH 769H was an early production example, bought brand new from the Aylesbury Motor Company in 1969 by Mick Briant – the hugely successful British rally driver who won the Motoring News Championship three times, the BTRDA and the Welsh Championship. Mick has documented his illustrious history in British National Rallying in three books in which NBH 769H features. Mick recounts his exploits in the car with much enthusiasm: 'I don’t recall my actual first outing (in NBH 769H), but my first National event was the January 1970 Rally Bristowe, with Mick Mancy navigating (numerous photos of the pair appear in one of Mick’s book, 'Do you have to drive like that?'), we managed eighth overall out of 150 starters'.Mick went on to endow NBH 769H with an upgraded engine, courtesy of Racing Services of Twickenham, stroking and boring the original block and taking it out to 1,860cc. The engine was dry-sumped, had a steel crank and rods, Cosworth pistons and L1 cams, big valves and some other 'trick' bits. Mick states: 'I don’t recall the actual power output, but it was the best engine possible until the 2-litre alloy-blocked Cosworth BDA become an option'. Mick recalls that NBH 76DH went onto receive the de-rigueur big arches of the time and a colour change to orange (which coined the car the nickname 'The Orange Box').He did several rounds in the prestigious Motoring News Championship in NBH 769H, always finishing in the top ten and in 1971 Mick won the London Counties Rally Championship in NBH 769H, with Donald Close navigating. The car was renewed in-period and returned to white bodywork with a black bonnet that displayed the ‘Go Perrys’ livery (the Ford dealer in Aylesbury). NBH 769H is listed as 'Escort 1860' (car #40) on the entry list of the 1971 Jim Clark Memorial Rally, in which Mick drove (with Peter Robinson navigating), and of which a photo exists of the car on the start line.In 2017, our vendor (a rally enthusiast, driver and car collector) acquired NBH 769H and entrusted it to master engineer, Andrew Stapley of ASM Classics in Kent, who specialise in restoring some of the best classic Fords in the UK. Over some four years, our vendor has invested c.£65,000 in bringing this venerable rally car up to a remarkable standard. So much so, it was invited to be displayed at the NEC Classic Motor Show 2021, where after nearly 50 years apart, Mick Briant and Peter Robinson were reunited with the car, plus some of its navigators, all autographing the inside of the doors (captured in photos and video).ASM's expert attention included a full renewal of the Twin-Cam signature paint colour, Ermine White (with black bonnet and in period livery), its big-arch Type 49 shell, its revered Lotus Twin-Cam engine (with associated dyno readings), its DCOE Weber carbs, 4-speed gearbox, competition clutch and pressure plate, English axle (with 4.7 diff ratio & LSD), coil sprung front Bilstein suspension, leaf sprung rear, plus the addition of Cibie spotlights and a whole host of mods to make this into a formidable period rally/fast-road car.NBH 769H has only been used sparingly since its complete restoration, residing in our vendor’s private Collection, but notably, it was driven ‘up the hill’ at Shelsley Walsh by our vendor and indeed, one Mick Briant – again, all captured for posterity and provenance. One of the defining hot hatches of the 1990s, this remarkably original, first generation Clio Williams has covered just 9,331 miles from new. It’s the early 1990s and the 1.8-litre Clio 16v is locked in combat for hot hatch glory with the ageing Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9. It’s a better car by many objective criteria, but not a convincingly faster one and in the eyes of many, the GTi still holds the crown. It took a truly special car to convincingly wrestle supremacy away from Peugeot, to really bury the old-timer and to refine the class in the process. That car was the Clio Williams.Sold with the compelling marketing strategy of an F1 team association, the Williams was actually an 'homologation special' in the familiar mould. It was built because RenaultSport wanted to go rallying and the class maximum displacement stood at 2-litres. Given this was still the era of homologation into 'Classes' A and 'N', Renault simply had to build 2,500 road cars to qualify, although it would eventually build many more. The initial production run of the Clio Williams was limited to just 5,400 examples, of which only 390 arrived in the UK.The suspension used a reinforced front subframe borrowed from the Clio Cup racer plus uprated springs, dampers, rear torsion arms and thicker anti-roll bars. The track was increased by 34mm and the 7J Speedline alloys were 0.5" wider than the 16v’s and distinctively gold. The gearbox was stronger too, with revised ratios. There was just one exterior colour offered for the first generation of Williams – '449' Metallic Sports Blue – and the cumulative effect of body (already blistered of arch, front, and rear and bulging of bonnet from the 16v), paint and those golden wheels was as close to hot hatch perfection as many felt it was possible to get.Codenamed 'F7R' and developed from the 16v’s 137bhp F7P unit, the new engine featured a longer stroke and bigger bore size and benefitted from a stronger crankshaft plus new pistons, camshafts and conrods with bigger valves and a lightweight exhaust manifold. Output was now 148bhp at 6,100rpm and 126lb/ft at 4,500rpm, not enormous by today's standards but 85% of the torque was available from 2,500rpm and the car only weighed 981kg. The factory specification included central locking, electric windows, and blue-faced instrument dials with three co-ordinating blue auxiliary read-outs atop the centre console displaying the oil level, temperature and pressure – all very purposeful.#0181 is one of the finest Clio Williams to come to the market for a very long time with just 9,331 miles from new and with the original owner for nearly 25 years. Ordered new by him from Arlington Renault of Yeovil in August 1993, it arrived from the factory and was registered in February 1994. Testament to his caring ownership, the Clio is accompanied by the most comprehensive of history files which includes the original sales receipt, a promotional leaflet with a handwritten deposit receipt on it, tax discs and three MOTs over its limited use between dry storage. The inventory includes all driver manuals, two sets of keys and the obligatory Gemini Alarm fobs required in the day to get it insured. Movement overhauled and cleaned, cosmetic polishing of the case and brass lacquered parts. The scale frets to the sides may be replacements or are clean rebacked in modern cloth. In the same good restored condition as when at the time of purchase by the family of the present owner at auction in Shropshire in 1989 for £4200Movement overhauled and clean at the same time the case lightly repolished prior to purchase from R G Cave & Sons Ltd, Antique dealers, Ludlow, Shropshire in 1982 for £1650.Please note there are two minor cracks to the case on the right hand side. The movement in working order, the lock to the rear door is attached but present. The Strike/Silent finger may be a replacement. There is some discolouration to the silvering of the chapter ring and other parts of the dial.
