Eight day longcase clock with painted dial inscribed Smith, Pittenweem, with rocking ship in the arch, in mahogany case with inlaid shell, boxwood stringing and banding and scroll pediment. Condition Report Wilson, false plate. Generally good condition. The rocking ship dial looks original, almost certain. The dial has been either nicely restored or is very clean. Rocking ship appears original. The case is good, has minor veneer variations. Rear feet detached but present.
Attributed to John Warwick Smith, (British 1749-1831) "Shepherd in rural landscape"Painted depicting a shepherd and flock before a stone arch way and rural plains, unsigned, 48x59cms, oil on canvas, framed. CONDITION REPORT: Painting has undergone some restoration and appears to have been relined and cleaned.Under ultra violet light, the lower section fluoresces green only, indicating only small amounts of the original natural varnish remains. It appears the painting has been revarnished.Small area of overpaint to the sky area. Overall restoration, however appears to be sympathetic.

A George III oak longcase clock, by Hugh Pannell, Northallerton, with two-train striking movement. Height excluding brass finial 204 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The clock hood has some pieces of the dentil cornice missing which should be visible on our image. There is also some evidence of old woodworm beneath the left and right sections of dentil moulding. The glazed door is in generally good order but there are three stress fractures to the arch. The door itself requires properly fixing. The hinges are not working correctly. We have the key and pendulum and the clock appears to operate when weight is applied to the mechanism. The hammer is missing as is the rack return spring. The rack lever needs repair. There is no bell. The striking mechanism has basically been deactivated. The seatboard has been replaced at some point in the clocks life but as the mask around the dial appears to fit the aperture we do not think that this clock is a marriage. The door is not warped. We do not have a key. The sides of the trunk are in generally good condition. The base is in good order also. There is however a slight gap between one of the planks. The left hand base return moulding is present but detached. We have the weight.
A Georgian oak longcase clock, with two-train striking movement by William Kipling, London, with ship automaton to arch. Height 204 c (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock case is generally a little tired. The hood is all present and the glass undamaged. The gilt capitals have been repainted and the general feel to the finish is a little tired. The trunk door is currently locked and we do not have a key. The door is not warped. There is a small repair to the top left hand corner. There is a further small repair to the left hand side of the lock. The lock has probably been forced at some point. The sides of the case are not warped but there are some old stress fractures, scuffs and marks. The moulding below the door is all intact. The base panels have some stress fractures particularly to the front. The plinth moulding may not be original but has certainly been on the clock for a very long time and is in keeping. We have two weights and the pendulum and when weight is applied to the movement it does appear to tick and strike. We have however not had the clock running for any significant length of time. The movement is a little dirty but looks to have been cleaned in fairly recent times. The dial itself is in good order as is the silvering. The ship automaton seems to operate as it should. The seat board is old and appears to be original. The mask around the dial fits at the bottom and sides but there is a gap around the arch at the top. This could simply be settlement but may indicate a marriage. The ship automaton could possibly be a later addition to what was originally a square dial clock as there are two visible pins where the arch is attached to the square dial.We have just noticed that the left hand rear quarter round pillar at the back of the case is missing. The right hand rear quarter round corner pillar has evidence of old woodworm in the soft wood at the bottom.
A George III walnut longcase clock, by Wilkinson of Wigton, with moon phase and date aperture, the dial also inscribed "Jane Bird". Case height 225 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock is generally in extremely good condition. There has been a break to the right hand swans neck pediment which should be clear on our image. There has been a further break to the left hand pediment which is much less visible. The remainder of the hood is in generally very good order with only minor stress fractures to the bottom left and right of the arch. The silvered brass dial has clearly recently been cleaned and re silvered and is in very good condition as is the moon phase. We have the weight and pendulum. The pendulum is unfortunately missing the suspension strip. The clock does however tick and strike without the pendulum if that makes any sense. The seatboard would appear to be original and in our opinion the clock is not a marriage. The trunk door is in good condition and not warped. The sides of the case have old stress cracks but no significant issues. The clock base is also in generally good condition with only minor stress cracks and marks as one might expect. The backboards are in good condition and original. The only real issue is the small matter of the clock suspension at the top of the pendulum which is a very minor issue. We can see no evidence of any woodworm and there is no brasswork so to speak of other than the face of the clock.
A Victorian walnut open armchair, with exposed moulded showframe, upholstered back, arms and seat and raised on front cabriole legs terminating in castors (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The chair is structurally very sound with no loose joints. The moulded showframe around the deep buttoned back is all in good order and only a little dirty in the carved sections. There are some marks to the showframe around the braiding and it looks as if the piece may have been studded at some point where the braiding now is. There is one old nail head visible at the right hand bottom section of the arch just above the braiding. The front arm and leg are in good condition with only minor surface scuffs to the proud parts of the carving. The castor is original. There are scuffs again to the showframe along the front by the braiding possibly indicating studding. The left hand arm is in generally good order although there is a loss to the carving on the front left hand section of the leg and a further loss just to the left of the seat pad. The leg and the scroll have not been broken and the castor is original. The rear legs are in good order with only minor old surface scuffs and scratches as one would expect. The castors are original. The upholstery is in generally good condition with no staining or discolouration. There are no tears. The braiding is generally in good condition all round.
A George III inlaid mahogany and simulated rosewood longcase clock by Nicholas Himes of Helston, with eight day striking movement and rhyme to the arch, the case with fluted quarter column corners and raised on ogee bracket feet. Height 232 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: We would have thought this clock is circa 1790. The clock hood is in generally good condition with no significant damage issues. It could do with a clean and polish. The trunk door is not warped. The brass lock escutcheon is probably original as are the hinges and door knob. The satinwood urn to the centre of the door has a section of veneer in the centre which is slightly lifting but there are no losses. The corner spandrels are in good condition. The clock base is also in good condition with no warping to the front panel. The feet would appear to be original and in generally good condition. The case, as stated, would benefit from a clean. We have the weights and pendulum and the clock is currently ticking away and striking as it should. The silvered brass dial is in generally good order although a little tarnished and dirty in places. In our opinion the clock is not a marriage. There is no sign of any woodworm.

He was buried in Kilbrogan, outside Cork city. He was a prominent Freemason and worked active during the years of 1738-1780. The Corporation of Youghal, just east of Cork City set £8 aside for him for “repairing and putting up” the town clock in 1777. Along with bracket clocks such as this one he also manufactured long case models. He took at least two apprentices, William Knapp, who opened his own business in 1760. Cork was a major Atlantic port at this time, with extensive trade links to many European countries, and arguably the most cosmopolitan town in Ireland. James Aicken was married twice and he had at least two sons and two daughters. One of his sons, George, followed his father’s footsteps in the clock trade with premises also in James Street and Queen’s Place. He was apprenticed in London becoming a Freemason of the Clockmakers Company on the 29th May 1777 and is also listed among the Cork Goldsmiths. He returned to Cork, and, like his father, married twice. He had two children but died in 1813 taking the Aickin name from Cork clockmaking circles with him.
