Dutch School, c. 1700."Portrait of a musician.Oil on canvas. Re-tinted.It presents restorations.Measurements: 43 x 32 cm; 48 x 37,5 cm (frame). The author of this work conceives a portrait in an elegant and complex way, creating a trompe l'oeil and placing the main character behind a window formed by a semicircular arch, which ends in a sill where there are several elements that seem to stand out from the space, such as the book and the embroidered ribbon. The figure smiles amiably as he plays the violin, directing his art at the viewer. This is not only a portrait of a musician, but the author recreates a scene in which he exalts the viewer's senses by paying tribute to the arts. The relief in the foreground, showing small children playing with a goat and a mask, refers to classical sculpture, the book to poetry, the violin clearly alludes to music, the background shows a space dominated by an easel with a painting, and the perfect semicircular arch highlights the role of architecture. Thus, with the exception of dance and rhetoric, the author brings together in this scene all the disciplines that were known as the liberal or fine arts.
