CAMPBELL MALCOLM: (1885-1948) British Land & Water Speed Record Holder. T.L.S., M. Campbell, one page, 4to, Piccadilly, London, 23rd September 1936, to A. E. Moorhouse of the West End Congregational Church at Southport. Campbell thanks his correspondent for their letter and remarks 'I should be obliged if, when the time draws nearer, you would write me again and let me know whether I should wear an ordinary lounge suit, dinner jacket, or tails when delivering this lecture at Southport. I should also be glad to know whether you have a lantern, and/or a cinematograph projector. I have a very large number of slides, and some interesting films which I could bring along with me if you are able to make use of them', and concludes by asking for the name and address of the best hotel in Southport so that he can make arrangements for his accommodation. A bronze discoid hanging lantern with concertina body; the lower body a dish with bands of openwork geometric ornament, central panel with punched scales, points and swags and maker's mark; concertina-type wire-framed body with linen sleeve; upper body slightly domed with bands of openwork to the upper face, central socket and vent; within, a shallow rimmed socket and separate bowl and candleholder; bell-shaped lid with openwork bands, knop handle and lateral securing loop, two knops and flat-section handle with loop and hook; chain with loop to each end. 619 grams total, 17cm (6 3/4").
