Born on October 23, 1844, in Amiens, France, Branly studied at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris and later became a professor at the Catholic University of Paris. In 1890, Branly invented the coherer, which was a type of radio wave detector that was used to receive wireless signals. The coherer consisted of a tube filled with metal filings, which would become conductive when exposed to electromagnetic radiation. The coherer was a major breakthrough in wireless communication technology, and it allowed for the development of wireless telegraphy and radio broadcasting. Branly's coherer was widely used in early radio receivers, and it paved the way for the development of more sophisticated radio wave detectors. Édouard Branly died on March 24, 1940, at the age of 95. His invention of the coherer had a major impact on the development of wireless communication technology, and his legacy continues to be felt in the field of telecommunications today.
