FOUR JAPANESE WOOD NETSUKE EDO/MEIJI PERIODS Variously carved as a tanuki using its swollen scrotum as an umbrella, Shoki the Demon-Queller with an oni on his hat, a parasol bearer holding a lantern in a manner reminiscent of the ghost Kasa-obake, and a beauty wearing long robes and an obi tied to the front, 7.9cm max. (4)
Birds and Butterflies: A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, with slender sticks, the upper section of the guards wider and carved with a flower. The gorge is both painted and pierced, the piercing simple with leaves and curves, a shaped lozenge painted centrally edged in gold and containing tiny brown leaves and delicate blue flowers. Nearer to the head, the gorge sticks are painted in blues and pinks with an Oriental lady and child, a butterfly hovering over lilac and pink flowers. The double paper leaf is fresh and bright and highlighted in gold. An Oriental child wearing pink and blue approaches a man, a lantern hung from a pole over his shoulder, a bird perched on his outstretched hand. The man in similar dress with the addition of a shaped black hat and black shoes, proffers a flower basket containing pink flowers. Behind him on a small table is an exotic pot plant with large leaves and a blue pottery bowl. Above the figures hovers a bright blue bird, another perched on a branch of a tree to the left. The verso is plain save for a few pink flowers and green leaves. The découpage on the leaf is highly detailed and covers the top border, both sides and provides some central detail. The designs are so intricate as to resemble high quality needle lace with various complex fillings, including pomegranates and leaves as well as lattice and scrolling. Guard length 28cmThe leaf is clean and fresh but does have some brown marking on the verso.
A late Victorian gilt metal and stained glass oval hall lantern, (at fault), 63cm CONDITION REPORT: The metal has a later painted finish throughout rather than a gilt finish. There are two jagged overlap join lines to the rim at the top and one fracture. There is one small yellow pain of glass which is cracked. A little 'flimsy' when handling it and the glass is a little loose in the frame. Diameter is 23cm x 21cm. A fascinating collection of 1930's coloured Magic Lantern glass slides - all 'real photo' - depicting various scenes throughout Sri Lanka during the period. The set of slides is accompanied by a period handwritten list detailing what each slide depicts - presumably written by the traveller who took the images. Views include; Watawala, Hewadiwela, Haputale and other similar locations. Rather charmingly, in the notes, the visitors are called 'Metropolitans' and one slide depicts the 'smashing of a coconut' over a trader's head as a form of welcome! The series seems to depict some form of Catholic religious group (including a bishop, and chaplain) building churches, Confirmations, etc and many of the notes mention this (and the slides depict), views of rubber and tea plantations etc. A fascinating personal account. Note: despite having some sequential slides missing, the set completely matches the handwritten list.
