Orden & Ehrenzeichen Deutschland - Preußen : Preußen: Schwarzer Adler Orden: Gestickter Bruststern zum Ordenskreuz vom Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts. German Orders and Medals - Kingdom of Prussia : Prussia: Black Eagle Order: Embroidered Breast Star to the Order from the end of the 18th century. Order of the Black Eagle - late 18th century embroidered breast star. Especially large example from the last quarter of the 18th century made in silver lantern and sequins. The particularly vivid and finely embroidered center medallion in gilded silver threads and silk embroidery. Reverse with completely preserved cover paper. As documented on numerous contemporary portraits of knights of the Order, breast stars of the Order in the 18th century were much larger than in later periods. Already at the beginning of the 19th century and during the Napoleonic Wars the dimensions became considerably smaller due to military fashion of that period. The piece of insignia offered hereis outstanding, not only by its beautiful embroidery quality but also by its, especially considering its age, quite excellent state of preservation. This version is of extraordinary rarity and only very few comparable examples are still knonwn to exist.

Lot 3

German Orders and Medals - Grand Duchy of Frankfurt : Grand Duchy of Frankfurt - Order of ConcordGrand Cross Breast Star. Embroidered official issue. Silver lantern and silver threads. The medallion gold and made in two separate parts. Reverse with original paper cover. Highly important and excessively rare original breast star from the workshop of the Frankfurt jeweler Wohack. Early 19th century, ca. 1813. The Order of Concord was founded in 1813, on August 15, the birthday of Emperor Napoleon I, by Carl von Dalberg (1744-1817), Prince-Primate of the Confederation of the Rhine and Grand Duke of Frankfurt. Dalberg, as former Arch-Chancellor of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, had taken up the regency of the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt, which had been established especially for him, on February 16, 1810. To secure French rule for the future, he had previously accepted Napoleon's adopted son, Eugène de Beauharnais, Viceroy of Italy, as his successor. The first bestowals of the Order of Concord were made on the occasion of the Concordat with the Holy See concluded in Fontainebleau in 1813. The Order existed only a few months and already ceased to exist after the occupation of Frankfurt by the troops of the allied Austrian, Prussian and Russian forces on November 2, 1813. According to the final award list of July 11, 1814, only 18 Grand Cross decorations were awarded (cf. H. Huner: "Der Konkordienorden des Großherzogtums Frankfurt", in: Heimat- und Geschichte - Jahresgabe der Aschaffenburger Zeitung f. d. Geschichtsverein Aschaffenburg, pp. 20 - 21, Aschaffenburg 1940). This breast star is illustrated and described in Klingbeil/Thies, Orden 1700 - 2000, Vol. I, p. 194/195, No. 584. Besides the official piece of insignia offered in this auction sale only three other breast stars are known to exist two of them beeing of private manufacture. There is a privately made metal star of the Order of Concord with enameled medallion from the estate of the Minister of State and Minister of the Interior and Justice in the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt, Franz Joseph Freiherr von Albini, probably made by the Parisian jewelers Coudray or Biennais. Another example from the estate of Ignaz Heinrich Freiherr von Wessenberg, Vicar General and Bishopric Administrator at Constance, is also a privately made metal version, but with a conventional two-part medallion in gold. In addition, there is another embroidered breast star in a somewhat larger version, which is very similar to our specimen. Apart from these four breast stars, no other originals seem to have survived. One of the rarest orders of the Napoleonic period and due to the connection to Dalberg an extraordinarily interesting and important testimony to the history of the City of Frankfurt as well as the Confederation of the Rhine and the associated end of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.

Lot 15

German Orders and Medals - Kingdom of Wurttemberg : Order of the Golden Eagle - Embroidered Breast Star to the Order. Kingdom of Wurttemberg - Order of the Golden Eagle Grand Cross Breast Star. Silver lantern and sequins, the five-part medallion gold and enamels. The translucent red enameled cross and the green enameled center medallion with the cipher "FR" (King Frederick I) of particularily fine workmanship. A breast star very similar to our specimen and most likely made by the same jeweler and owned by Emperor Napoleon I was in the Emperor's carriage captured at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. It was displayed with his other orders and medals in the Armory (Zeughaus) in Berlin until 1945 when captured by the Soviets. The medals are now in the possession of the Russian Federation and were exhibited in the Museum of the Legion of Honor in Paris 2012. All breast stars officially issued by the Chancellery of the Order of the Golden Eagle were made with embroidered medallions. Obviously, the manufacturer of the Napoleon star and our example had the award piece with the embroidered medallion as a template. Curiously, the star worn by Napoleon himself and presumably made by a French jeweler, as well as our specimen, have axes instead of the statute-compliant hunting horns between the tips of the arms of the cross. Extraordinarily rar breast star most probably made by the same jeweller as Napoleon's star. From 1807 - 1816 only a little more than 100 awards of the Order of the Golden Eagle were made. (Gottschalk names 75 recipients, Klein u. Raff mention 15 crowned heads as well as 13Knights of the Order from the House of Württemberg and 95 other knights according to the court and state handbooks of the Kingdom of Württemberg 1807-1815.
