A pair of 19th Century copper hall lanterns, of tapering conical form, converted to electricity, 90cm dropThere are several small bends and knocks to the metalwork in line with age and usage. Pleaseant verdigris finish. Glass intact but we are not sure what type of glass it is. The little hatches are a mystery perhaps used for lighting / extinguishing when it was a gas lantern. One of the covers in question has a a stiff hinge, probably corroded so it does not work properly. The other has a replacement hinge and catch. These sold at Chorleys May 2019 auction for £1,300, they were not dated in that sale and I am inclined to say these are 20th Century having inspected them.

Polar.- Norwegian Antarctic Expedition 1910-12.- The South Pole, 27 (of 57) direct positive glass lantern slides, illustrating Amundsen's successful expedition to the South Pole, printed imprint slip to mounts, numbered and titled in white to mounts, one or two slightly cracked, some with patches of mould at edges of image, slight rubbing to frames, approx. 80 x 80mm, United Newspapers, [1912]. *** The slides vividly capture the first ever expedition to reach the South Pole, led by Roald Amundsen. "Unlike some of his contemporaries - especially Scott - Amundsen never had a professional photographer on any of his expeditions. He and his companions took pictures themselves as they felt the need. In this alone they were amateurs, and their work was undoubtedly that of the snapshot. Whatever the drawbacks in presentation, this did at least register events as seen through their own eyes. The outcome is a poignant blend of immediacy, artlessness and authenticity" (R. Huntford, The Amundsen Photographs).
