Original 1853 Ermington and Plympton Devon Magistrates Summons, this original summons was issued by two local magistrates Admiral George Woollcombe and Captain William Harris, at a court in Yealmpton on the 22nd September 1853. The summons orders the committee known of the “Overseers” of the poor of Plympton St. Marys to pay out of their own funds, the half years salary of the two parish constables, John Lavers and Thomas Frounde, a total of £28.10s., that is £14.5s. to each for half a years salary. This was three years prior of the formation of the original Devon Constabulary, each parish or town provided their own law enforcement officers and financed their salaries. This summons comes in a glazed frame, plus a Victorian hardwood truncheon, ribbed turned grip, approx. 18 ½ inches (47 cms) long, early steel figure of eight hand cuffs with key and a one stack chimney “Bullseye” police lantern.
