17 x positive glass plate magic lantern slides by Tempest Anderson, (1846-1913) the eminent ophthalmologist, volcanologist and photographer. Black bordered plates, with white labels, annotated by hand in black ink. Three smaller square plates sized 8.2x8.2cm, annotation now illegible. The remaining fourteen plates (8.2 x10cm) have clearly written descriptions, all initialled 'T A' in Tempest Anderson's hand and dated 1896.Subjects: These images were taken in the Alpine areas of France and Italy. They depict aspects of the Mer de Glace, glacier tables, crevasses etc in Chamonix, Mont Mallet and Mont de Saxe. The subjects and annotations reflect several of Anderson's passions; geology, the Alps and photography. Anderson was at the forefront of technological advances in photography, he made his own equipment and even invented a panoramic camera with revolving lens, which was later independently produced by Kodak, so it is interesting to see him note which lenses he used on some of these plates. Typical annotations include: 'Lateral moraine near mauvais pas' 'Bergschrund Col du Géant. Telephoto lens' & 'Bergschrund at foot of La Vierge above Géant icefall, horizontal stratification. Vertical veining'.

Henry Pilleau (French, 1813-1899) Lantern Shop in the Esbekiah, Cairo signed lower right with monogram "HP" and signed, inscribed with title and artist's address on a label on the frame oil on canvas 35 x 52cm (14 x 20in) Exhibited: West Midlands, The Dudley Gallery, Winter 1872, No. 13 Other Notes: Henry Pilleau exhibited at the Royal Academy, London and was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1882. Pilleau visited Egypt in the winter of 1842-43 with Lieutenant Colonel George Everest (after whom Mount Everest was named) and two other companions, on their way home from India. On his return to England he published a set of twelve coloured lithographs -Sketches in Egypt (1845) - which, like the better-known publications of Wilkie, Roberts and Owen Jones in the same decade, fuelled popular interest in Egypt and the Holy Land. The success of his work encouraged him to give up his Army career in order to devote his time to painting and travelling. He visited Egypt again in 1863 and 1868-69, and exhibited at several London institutions. Egyptian men and women are seen here in a town or village on the Nile. In the shade of an overhanging tree a market stall displays its wares, including paper lanterns and bread. At the stall behind, sugar cane is for sale. In the background is a mosque with a white minaret, though not distinctive enough to establish the scene's locality. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds a watercolour by Henry Pilleau of the same subject, painted in 1869. A little dirty and old stretcher bar marks can be seen from the front.
