Ca. 618-907 AD.A hollow moulded terracotta figurine depicts a kneeling lady in a posture exuding grace and poise. Clad in an elegant ensemble consisting of a red skirt and a delicately decorated bodice, the figure showcases the rich and vibrant colour palette. The artist's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the delicately rendered facial features, accentuated by the application of black pigment, while the vivid red lips enhance the figure's captivating expression. The lady's hair is meticulously styled into a double topknot, an intricate hairstyle that adds to her refined appearance. In the hands of this kneeling lady rests an enigmatic object, likely a musical instrument. Musician figures were highly prevalent during the Tang Dynasty, reflecting the dynasty's deep appreciation for music and performance as integral aspects of courtly life. These figurines often adorned the tombs of the elite, symbolizing their desire to maintain a luxurious and culturally rich afterlife. The inclusion of musical instruments in such figurines suggests the importance of auditory stimulation and melodic expression in the spiritual realm. This piece has been precisely dated having undergone Thermo Luminescence analysis by Ralf Kotalla, an independent German Laboratory. The samples collected date the piece to the period reflected in its style, whilst also showing no modern trace elements. Its TL certificate with the full report will also accompany this lot. Cf. Late Period, 30th Dynasty, Ca. 332 BC.An ushabti, fashioned from light blue glazed composition, captures attention with its refined artistry and profound symbolic significance. This small funerary figurine was meticulously crafted to fulfill a vital role within the ancient Egyptian beliefs and practices surrounding the afterlife. Serving as a miniature representation of the deceased, the ushabti is adorned with meticulous details and imbued with spiritual purpose. Adorned with an intricately designed wig, the ushabti's hairstyle emulates the fashion of the elite in ancient Egyptian society. This tripartite wig features carefully sculpted layers that frame the face and cascade down the back, imparting a sense of regal elegance to the figurine. Standing firmly on a small integral flat base, the ushabti exhibits a balanced and poised stance, reflecting its readiness to undertake assigned tasks. With crossed arms firmly over its chest, the ushabti holds an agricultural tool in its clenched fist, symbolizing the deceased's commitment to labor in the afterlife. This gesture signifies the individual's dedication to fulfilling responsibilities and maintaining a productive role within the cosmic order of the next realm. Ushabtis played a central role in ancient Egyptian funerary beliefs, representing the individual's desire for a comfortable and prosperous afterlife. These figurines were carefully crafted and placed in tombs, ensuring the perpetual presence and assistance of the deceased in the afterlife. Through the belief in the ushabti's magical animation and its responsiveness to summoning, it was thought that the figurine would undertake various tasks on behalf of the deceased, encompassing agricultural labor, construction, and general service. Ca. 100-200 AD.A lead votive horse and rider figurine captures a remarkable scene of equestrian prowess and devotion. Crafted in lead, this figurine depicts a rider astride a horse, both rendered with simplified features. The horse is depicted in a right profile, with a lowered head, while the rider sits atop with an air of command and control. Notably, the backside of the horse is left flat and unworked, suggesting its original purpose as part of a larger votive offering. Figurines of horse riders on horses were often offered as votive offerings to deities, representing acts of devotion, gratitude, or requests for divine favor. The horse and rider imagery symbolized various aspects, such as military might, equestrian skill, and the relationship between humans and the divine. Equestrianism played a crucial role in military campaigns, signifying power, control, and mobility. The depiction of a horse and rider in votive figurines may have represented aspirations for success in warfare or a desire for divine protection during military endeavors. Size: L:42mm / W:42mm ; 15g Provenance: Private London collection; formerly acquired in the US in the 1990s.
