Hier 2004 auf der Tefaf erworben.- Süddeutsche Privatsammlung.Die vorliegende, bisher unveröffentlichte Landschaft ist ein typisches Werk für Salvator Rosas reifes Schaffen. Die Komposition wird durch die diagonale Linie des Wassers in verschiedene Bereiche geteilt. Ein aufgeplatzter Baum unterstreicht die rechte Seite der Leinwand und bildet einen Kontrapunkt zu den Soldaten und Banditen, die sich auf der linken Seite versammeln, diskutieren und ausruhen. Das Interesse des Malers aber liegt vor allem in der Beschreibung der Felsen, die, wie so oft in seinem Schaffen, zum zentralen Element des Bildes und zur natürlich Bühne für die dargestellten Szenen werden.Unsere „Felsige Küstenlandschaft mit Figuren“ dürfte in den 1650er Jahren gemalt worden sein und steht in engem Zusammenhang mit anderen Gemälden aus dieser Zeit, in der Rosa häufig die bergige Topografie der römischen Landschaft darstellte. Diese Gruppe von Bildern, die nach Rosas Rückkehr nach Rom entstand, zeigt den Einfluss von Gaspard Dughets klassischem Ansatz in der Landschaftsmalerei. Eine Referenz für die Datierung ist Rosas Publikation „Figurine“ von 1656. Es ist eine Folge von mehr als dreißig Radierungen mit Figuren in verschiedenen Kostümen und Posen, die seinem Mäzen Carlo de' Rossi gewidmet war. Dort sind mehrere vergleichbar gruppierte Soldaten zu finden. Weitere Parallelen lassen sich zu anderen Werken Rosas finden, z. B. zu dem Gemälde „Banditen an einer Felsküste“ im Metropolitan Museum of Art, das eine sehr ähnliche Figurengruppe inmitten einer fast identischen Landschaft zeigt (Abb. 1). Vergleichbare Werke Rosas befinden sich auch in der Sammlung Doria Pamphilij in Rom („Marina con arco roccioso“) oder im Detroit Institute of Arts (Inv. 47.92). Die vorliegende Leinwand kann als Prototyp für eine Werkstattversion derselben Komposition angesehen werden, die sich heute in der Eremitage befindet (Öl auf Leinwand, 52,5 Ñ… 91,5 cm, Inv. 179).Der gebürtige Neapolitaner Salvator Rosa war Maler, Schauspieler und Dichter und eine der unkonventionellsten Figuren seines Jahrhunderts. Sein extravaganter Charakter sowie sein vielseitiges künstlerisches Schaffen - Porträts, Allegorien, Nacht- und Hexenszenen und vor allem Landschaften - lassen ihn als einen proto-romantischen Künstler erscheinen. In der Tat hat Rosa großen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der Landschaftsmalerei gehabt. Neben der klassischen und erhabenen Tradition im 17. Jahrhundert führte er eine neue Typologie ein, die einer wilden, ungezähmten Natur mit felsigen Klippen, zerklüfteten und moosbewachsenen Bäumen. Gepaart mit seiner bravourösen Malweise erzeugen seine Bilder ein aufgewühltes, dramatisches Gefühl. Damit unterscheiden sie sich sichtbar von der Gelassenheit Claude Lorrains oder der klassischen Erhabenheit von Poussin.
