Tang Dynasty, 618-906 AD. A carved stone figurine of the Buddha seated cross-legged on a lotus. 25 kg, 47 cm (18 1/2"). Property of a London Gentleman; acquired before 1995. The statue depicts the Buddha after his enlightenment preaching his doctrine to his followers. The raised hand, now missing, would have been in the Vitarka Mudra that symbolizes the explanation of the teachings. Fine condition.
