4th century BC. A hollow-cast terracotta pig figurine with lowered head. 391 grams, 15cm (6"). From an old British private collection; formed between 1975 and 1985. A number of ceramic pig figurines have been found at the ancient ritual site of Eleusis close to Athens. The Eleusinian Mysteries were the most famous of the so called Mystery Cults and focused on the agrarian goddess Demeter and her daughter the goddess Persephone who was abducted by Hades and taken to the underworld at Eleusis. The cult was a secret one that involved initiation and was concerned with purification, the revelation of sacred objects and words and the belief in the rebirth of the soul as exemplified by the return of life in Spring. At the site of Eleusis a crack in the earth marked the spot where Hades carried Persephone to the underworld and it was at this spot that devotees would sacrifice pigs or leave ceramic models of pigs as an offering. [No Reserve] Fine condition.

Ex Steinberg collection; acquired London art market, 1960s-1970s. Walter Steinberg has been a well-known figure at fairs, sales and events for many years. Born in 1922 in Philadelphia, Walter has had a life-long passion for collecting. A long-time resident in London, he has now retired to New York and decided that the time has come to pass on the antiquities and coins he has collected over his lifetime. Walter acquired coins and artefacts that interested him, so his collection, although containing many lovely examples, also contains many affordable specimens. Much of the material has been unavailable to the market for 30 to 50 years. Walter hopes that the items he collected will now find new homes with the next generation of collectors. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
