An undated archaistic bronze figurine of the god Pan in 2nd century AD style, standing with left hand behind his back, right hand supporting a lamb; the god nude, bearded with tousled hair, ram's horns to the temples, goat's legs and feet in advancing pose, tail looped to the rear; mounted on a custom-made stand. 247 grams, 13.5cm including stand (5 1/4"). The god Pan was associated with the herding and hunting in the Greek world, hence the depiction as part-human and part-goat. The image of Isis nursing the infant Horus was one that displayed the maternal and protective power of the goddess. Images of the medicine Buddha are the same as the historical Buddha but are shown holding a bowl which contains the healing myrobalan plant. Acquired on the London art market before 1995.
