19th-20th century AD. A hollow-cast bronze figurine of Kwan Yin seated on a lotus-flower base with tongue-shaped nimbus to the rear, right hand raised in the gesture of reassurance; signature block to the underside. Private collection, West London, UK; acquired in the 1990s. 280 grams, 12.5cm (5"). Fine condition.
Tang Dynasty, 618-906 AD. A hollow-formed ceramic figurine of a soldier in hood and armoured coat with right hand to the chest to accept a model spear; traces of red and white pigment. Ex M D O’Hara collection of Chinese figurines; formed 1980s. During the Tang dynasty burials were constructed and furnished in accordance with restrictive sumptuary regulations that dictated the kind of tomb and quality of grave goods. It was only natural that families of noble rank would wish to copy the Imperial family, both in this life and the next, and so many of them had tomb figures made that would act as servants in the next life and which copied the larger, and more elaborate examples, found in Imperial tombs, though on a lesser scale. 1.6 kg, 29.5cm (11 1/2"). Fine condition.
20th century AD. A mixed group of ceramic items comprising: a cheese dish with lid, loop handle, floral border; two white-glazed jars for oil and vinegar, marked 'O' and 'V' respectively; a squat vase with lustre glazed mouth and rim; a cream-glazed figurine of two stylised figures embracing; a narrow-necked jar with cream and blue splashed slip; a miniature jar with frone decoration; a white-glazed milk jug with flowers and fruit, marked to the underside 'Made in England / Heathcote China / Best Bone'. Property of a retired Harwich collector. 2 kg total, 7.5-17cm (3 - 6 3/4"). [8, No Reserve] Fine condition.

A mixed group comprising: a hollow-cast bird figurine; an earring; a belt plaque; a D-shaped finger ring; a leaf-shaped iron knife; a nude male figurine; a harness mount suspension bar; an openwork harness mount; a mount with two dangles; a dagger chape; a cup weight; a length of chain; a coiled necklace fragment; nine buckles; a reproduction Thor's hammer pendant; a ring with opposed snake-heads. 16th-17th century AD. An archaistic cast gilt-bronze figurine of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara standing on a gussetted dais on a trapezoidal base; the Bodhisattva is shown with carefully modelled bands, the left hand holding a phial and the right raise. Property of a London Gentleman; acquired before 1975. Avalokiteshvara is the Bodhisattva of infinite compassion who put off entering Nirvana for the sake of helping all living creatures gain enlightenment. He is also known as Chenrezig, or in the female form of Kwan Yin. He is the most popular Buddhist deity after the Buddha himself and the Dalai Lama is considered to be the earthly manifestation of him. The vase that Avalokiteshvara holds contains the water of compassion which has the quality of removing suffering, purifying the defilements of the body, speech and mind, and lengthening life. 1.1 kg, 25 cm (9 3/4"). Fine condition.
9th-12th century AD. A mixed group of bronze items comprising: a human figure, flat to the reverse, with legs spread; a horse figurine, pierced at the shoulders; a bird-head staff terminal. From an old Munich collection; acquired on the German art market before 2000. 40 grams total, 34-52mm (1 1/4 - 2"). [3, No Reserve] Fine condition.
20th century AD. A bronze figurine of Mahakala seated on the back of a horse on a lotus flower base, surrounded by a nimbus of flame; Indra shown crowned with a sphere in his left hand, raised vajra in his right hand. London private collection, acquired 1985-1995. Mahakala is the lord of time and a protector deity of Tibetan Buddhism. Depictions of Mahakala riding a horse are relatively rare. 641 grams, 18cm (7"). Fine condition.
19th century AD. A carved ivory figurine of Buddha wearing an open-fronted jacket, sitting with the left hand on the raised left knee, string of beads with a pendant in the right hand. Property of an American gentleman; formerly in the private collection of the famous actor Leslie Phillips; acquired 1950-1960. Born in 1924 in London, Leslie Phillips attended the Italia Conti Academy where he developed the slightly affected accent which became his trademark. He usually played a roguish, suave charmer, and also enjoyed successful comic roles in the early Carry On films and on radio’s The Navy Lark. He has appeared in more than fifty films, plays and TV series spanning six decades; and recently gained new fans through his appearances in the Harry Potter films. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 1998 Queen's Birthday Honours; promoted to Commander (CBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours. 42 grams, 44mm (1 3/4").
