Late Period, 664-332 BC. A bronze figurine of the god Osiris with crossed arms and atef crown; square plate to the base with peg below. 41 grams, 98mm (4"). Ex Ellis collection, previously from the Coultard collection; by descent from his grandfather, Ernest Seymour Thomas (d. 1936), Egyptologist and King's messenger who was excavating in Egypt in the 1900s. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
7th-9th century AD. A gilt-bronze figurine of a female standing with left hand on the chest and right hand over the groin, fingers spread; bulbous head with lentoid eyes, flange ears, integral loop above. 4.58 grams, 32mm (1 1/4"). Property of a German collector; acquired in the 1980s and 1990s. Cf. Pestell, T. Paganism in Early Anglo-Saxon East Anglia in Heslop ,T. A., Mellings, E.A. & Thofner, M. Icon? Art and Belief in Norfolk from Prehistory to the Present, Woodbridge, 2012 for similar, earlier examples; for similar face details, see female figurines found in Denmark (Hårby, Revninge, Tissø) and figures from St Manchan's shrine in Ireland (see Wilson, D.M. and Klindt-Jensen, O. Viking Art, New York, 1966, plate LXXVIII, item a"). The pose is typical of bronze and other figurines of early Anglo-Saxon date, from the first half of the 7th century, both males and females. However, the figure's face resembles those of Viking period figurines found in Denmark and in the Dublin area inhabited by Viking settlers. The figurine possibly represents Freyja, the goddess of love, fertility and magic. Very fine condition. Extremely rare.
10th-12th century AD. A bronze figurine of a standing male modelled in the round with loop above the head; conical headgear and oversize shoulders suggesting a helmet and armour. 4.06 grams, 38mm (1 1/2"). Property of an American collector; acquired 1980-2000. [No Reserve] Fine condition, one leg absent.
13th-6th century BC. A bronze lion figurine with open jaws and extended tongue, crouching with forepaws extended; slot to the underside, socket between forepaws, ferrous accretion to the rear; possibly a dagger hilt fitting. 68 grams, 50mm (2"). Private collection, London, UK; formerly with Persepolis Gallery, Mayfair, London, UK; in the 1980s. Cf. Legrain, L. Luristan Bronzes in the University Museum, Pennsylvania, 1934, plate XI, item 43. Very fine condition.
2nd millennium BC. A ceramic figurine of a standing bull with pinched facial details, hump to the shoulders. 67 grams, 78mm (3"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired in the 1960s. The presence of a hump behind the neck may indicate that the species is the zebu (Bos taurus indicus"). [No Reserve] Fine condition, legs absent.
2nd millennium BC. A carved marble figurine of a turtle with domed head and large discoid eyes, slit mouth, incised grid to the 'shell', stubby limbs; a shallow circular hole to the underside of each limb and to the rump. 156 grams, 81mm (3 1/4"). Property of a North West London gentleman; formerly with a central London gallery in 1990. Fine condition, light abrasion.
4th-2nd millennium BC. A carved figurine of a standing bull in fossiliferous limestone showing cross-sections of numerous fossil mollusca, the bull with prominent crescentic horns and hump to the shoulders, elongated body. 4.2 kg, 33cm (13"). From an important collection of Asian art; acquired in the 1960s-1970s. The humped bull is a recurring theme in many of the ritual and decorative arts of the Indus region, appearing on painted pottery and as figurines long before the rise of cities and continuing on into later historical times as the bull mount of the god Shiva. Fine condition. Rare.
19th-20th century AD. A carved figurine of a horse with head facing to the rear, forelegs and hindlegs folded beneath the body. 37 grams, 51mm (2"). Property of a Warwickshire gentleman; formerly in the private collection of the famous actor Leslie Phillips; acquired 1950-1960. Born in 1924 in London, Leslie Phillips attended the Italia Conti Academy where he developed the slightly affected accent which became his trademark. He usually played a roguish, suave charmer, and also enjoyed successful comic roles in the early Carry On films and on radio’s The Navy Lark. He has appeared in more than fifty films, plays and TV series spanning six decades; and recently gained new fans through his appearances in the Harry Potter films.
