Viking Traded Devotional Figurine. Circa, 9th century AD. Copper-alloy / lead, 14.11 g, 28.19 mm. A lead filled, tinned bronze Buddha figurine. Discovered on a productive Viking age area on the Isle of Wight. Ref: PAS, IOW-F54117. Recorded as uncertain date by PAS. The method of manufacture and the level of corrosion certainly suggests its age to be on par with our prediction. The Buddha has an Uma on his forehead, symbolising the third eye and long ear lobes, the insignia of royalty. He sits in a mediative pose. We can't be sure but its likely that our Buddha arrived through trade via Swedish merchants whose eastern trade routes concentrated along Russian rivers such as the Volga. A very rare and interesting piece.
