A Chinese pottery figurine, 19th century, modelled as two gentlemen embracing, one clutching grasses and the other with a bowl and cover, the base stamped 'China', 12cm, together with a pair of Satsuma jars decorated with autumnal them, 8cm, and a Satsuma koro and cover decorated with figures and a dragon on a scrolling gilt ground, 12cm. Neolithic, 5000-4000 BC. A greyware figurine with peltoid face, lentoid eyes, triangular nose, incised linear detail to the face and body, arms bent. 104 grams, 97mm (3 3/4). Property of a German collector; acquired in the 1990s. The Vinca culture is named after a village in Serbia where a Neolithic village, dated to c.5,500–4,500 BC, was excavated. Excavations have revealed a number of figurines, predominantly female, that are believed to be deities. Fair condition, legs absent.
