Chinese Large Ceramic Walking Horse Tang Dynasty, 618-906 AD. A finely modelled figurine of a horse advancing with head tilted and mouth open; ochre-yellow pigment to the head and flanks, red detail to the saddle, ears and mouth, black to the eyes, crupper and bridle; hollow to the underside 9.7 kg, 60cm (23 1/2"). From an important London collection, acquired in the 1970s. Provided with a thermoluminescence test certificate issued by Oxford Authentication no. C114m47. Fine condition.
Gandharan Schist Standing Prince Statuette 2nd-4th century AD. A carved figurine in the round of a Bodhisattva or a nobleman with nimbus to the rear of the head, robe draped from the left shoulder with garlands to the neck, fillet to the brow, large earrings, urna to the forehead; mounted on a custom-made stand. 40.7 kg, 91cm (35 3/4"). From an important London collection, acquired in the 1970s. Fine condition.

Indian Kushan Marble Durga Goddess Figurine 1st-2nd century AD or later. A frieze fragment sculpted in the half-round depicting the goddess Durga, crowned and wearing a fringed robe, sitting on her lion mount with a sceptre in her left hand; arch above her head, base with row of D-shaped petals; mounted on a custom-made stand. 9.5 kg, 43cm (17"). Ex central London collection; acquired in London, UK, in the early 1980s. The goddess Durga is the primary manifestation of the Mother Goddess in Hinduism. It is believed her iconography derives from Near Eastern goddesses such as Ishtar and Cybele who are also shown riding lions. Although Durga is popular throughout the whole of the Indian subcontinent her main area of popularity is in Bengal. This is a rare depiction of Durga with two arms as she is normally shown with anything from four to ten. In this statue the goddess is shown holding a Trishul (trident) sacred to both the goddess and her consort the god Shiva. Fine condition.

Private London collection; acquired in the UK before 1980. Very fine condition, cleaned and conserved.
Roman Bronze Figurine of the God Nilus 1st-2nd century AD. A cast figurine depicting the god Nilus modelled with the long robes and cornucopia of Fortuna, the bearded head and modius of Serapis and facial features of Priapus; right arm absent. 67 grams, 81mm (3 1/4"). Property of a European gentleman living in the UK; formerly in a private collection formed in the 1990s. A rare depiction of the god Nilus (the personification of the River Nile) shown standing – most images show him reclining. He carries a cornucopia and wears a modius on his head – both symbols of the prosperity and abundance that the river provided. Very fine condition. Very rare.
