Slave Trade The Debate on a Motion for the Abolition of the Slave-Trade in the House of Commons on Monday and Tuesday, April 18 and 19, 1791. Printed by and for W. Woodfall, 1791. 8vo, later cloth; pp. [4], 123, [1]. The drive to abolition was a difficult one, against significant entrenched interests in the House. Outside, the campaign sought to harness indignation and revulsion, aided by a remarkable range of propaganda efforts. At its heart though, it was always the Parliamentary campaign which would see it through. William Wilberforce, at the request of Pitt, became the Parliamentary spokesman for the campaign in 1787. With the support of evidence gathered by an Enquiry, he was able to bring the matter to a vote. Despite dramatic and skilful rhetoric and knowledge of the evidence, the motion was struck down 163 to 88. However, the seeds had been sown and the issue would come again before the House in 1792, to increasing success. Hogg, African Slave Trade, 2343

Suffragette Movement In Memoriam Miss Emily Wilding Davison, B.A. Philp [sic] & Sons, [June] 1913. 12mo, single bifolium printed in black with photograph of Davison in scrollwork roundel. With a cutting from the Montreal Family Herald June 25 1913, headline 'Militants declare they are prepared to die to get vote'. Intriguingly, there is a piece on the reverse about a copycat incident at Royal Ascot by a disturbed man called Harold Hewitt, who appears not to have had a connection to the WSPU. At the 1913 Derby, Emily Davison entered the racetrack and seized the bridle of the King's horse, Anmer. She suffered terrible injuries and died a few days later. Despite opprobrium amongst the wider populace, this propaganda piece very deliberately aligns Davison's death with martyrdom. Its rhetorical flourishes position her almost as a second Christ, a human sacrifice for the benefit of all. Although modern historians question whether Davison intended to commit suicide, the narrative of the noble death for a higher cause became a powerful rallying symbol for the Suffrage movement.

Original vintage World War Two propaganda poster: Leaflets help win battles. ' Ai Sorrenda' - This poster features a monochrome photograph of a German soldier handing a leaflet to an allied solider along with a report from the 12th Army Group reading: "The phonetic spelling of 'I surrender' on the leaflet seems to stick in the minds of P/Ws. Many come over, leaflet in hand, shouting the words. Others had thrown away the leaflets, but had copied down the spelling of the surrender phrase." Airborne leaflet propaganda is a form of psychological warfare in which leaflets (flyers) are scattered in the air. Military forces have used aircraft to drop leaflets to attempt to alter the behavior of combatants and non-combatants in enemy-controlled territory, sometimes in conjunction with air strikes. Humanitarian air missions, in cooperation with leaflet propaganda, can turn the populace against their leadership while preparing them for the arrival of enemy combatants. Distribution of airborne leaflet propaganda was used by both Allied and Axis forces in the Second World War, starting with a Royal Air Force leaflet drop over the port of Kiel in September 1939.Year of printing: 1940s, country of printing: UK, designer: Unknown, dimensions (cm): 49.5x35. Lot 4412

Original vintage World War Two propaganda poster issued shortly after the liberation in 1945 with a design by Frederic H.K. Henrion (1914-1990): The soldiers of the Netherlands Underground Forces greet the soldiers of the United Nations. (Dutch title: De Binnenlandsche Strijdkrachten groeten de Soldaten der Bondgenooten). Printed by Offset Smeets, Weert. The Dutch resistance to the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands during World War II can be mainly characterized as non-violent, and was organized by the Communist Party, churches, and independent groups. A peak of over 300,000 people were hidden from German authorities in the autumn of 1944, tended to by some 60,000 to 200,000 illegal landlords and caretakers, and tolerated knowingly by some one million people, including a few incidental individuals among German occupiers and military. Dutch resistance developed relatively slowly, but the event of the 1941 February strike and its cause, the random police harassment and deportation of over 400 Jews, greatly stimulated resistance. The first to organize themselves were the Dutch communists, who set up a cell-system immediately. Some other very amateurish groups also emerged, notably De Geuzen, set up by Bernardus IJzerdraat, as well as some military-styled groups, such as the Order Service (Dutch: Ordedienst). Most had great trouble surviving betrayal in the first two years of the war. Dutch counterintelligence, domestic sabotage, and communications networks eventually provided key support to Allied forces, beginning in 1944 and continuing until the Netherlands was fully liberated. Some 75% (105,000 out of 140,000) of the Jewish population perished in the Holocaust, most of whom were murdered in Nazi death camps. A number of resistance groups specialized in saving Jewish children, including the Utrechtse Kindercomité, Landelijke Organisatie voor Hulp aan Onderduikers, Naamloze Vennootschap (NV), and Amsterdam Student Group. The Columbia Guide to the Holocaust estimates that 215–500 Dutch Romanis were killed by the Nazis, with the higher figure estimated as almost the entire pre-war population of Dutch Romanis.Year of printing: 1945, country of printing: Netherland, designer: Frederic Henrion, dimensions (cm): 130.5x86.5. Poor condition, original folds, creases and small tears on fold lines, top and right margins trimmed.

Original vintage WWI British propaganda poster - Buy a Victory Bond Now! - featuring a striking artwork by artist A. J. Charles showing a soldier pointing to the viewer while two soldiers on the sides are holding the Union Jack flag. British government relied more on short-term financing in the form of treasury bills and exchequer bonds during World War I. Treasury bills provided the bulk of British government funds in 1916, and were available for terms of 3, 6, 9 and 12 months at an interest rate of 5%. Although these were not formally designated as war bonds, advertising was explicit about their purpose. This April 1916 advertisement for 5% Exchequer bonds was typical of the time: "LEND YOUR MONEY TO YOUR COUNTRY. The soldier does not grudge offering his life to his country. He offers it freely, for his life may be the price of Victory. But Victory cannot be won without money as well as men, and your money is needed. Unlike the soldier, the investor runs no risk. If you invest in Exchequer Bonds your money, capital and interest alike, is secured on the Consolidated Fund of the United Kingdom, the premier security of the world."Year of printing: 1918, country of printing: UK, designer: A. Lot 4408

Original vintage World War Two propaganda poster commissioned by the C.E.M.A. (Council for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts - later to become the Arts Council of Northern Ireland), it features a painting by the respected artist Harold Sandys Williamson (1892-1978) titled 'September Hop-picking' and it was originally intended to be hung "where war workers congregate". In 1940, during the Second World War, the Council for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts (CEMA), was appointed to help promote and maintain British culture. Chaired by Lord De La Warr, President of the Board of Education, the Council was government-funded and after the war was renamed the Arts Council of Great Britain. The interest in the arts during World War II led to the first government subsidy of the arts in Britain with the founding of the Arts Council in 1946, championed by Jenny Lee. Williamson was born in Leeds and attended the Leeds School of Art from 1911 to 1914, when he moved to London to study at the Royal Academy schools. During the year he was at the Academy school he was awarded the Turner Gold Medal. At the start of World War One, Williamson sought to enlist in the Britiah Army and was, at his second attempt, accepted as a private in the King's Royal Rifle Corps in January 1916. Williamson was injured at least twice during the fighting on the Western Front in France. The first occasion was during the Battle of Delville Wood in September 1916, when he was hit by a grenade fragment. Whilst recovering from a subsequent infection, he undertook orderly work in the operating theatre at No. 6 General Hospital in France and made a number of paintings based his experiences there. Williamson was also injured in April 1918 at the Villers-Bretonneux sector, when the sunken road his unit was defending was overrun by German forces. This action became the subject of his painting A German Attack on a Wet Morning, April 1918, which Wiiliamson completed in the spring of 1919. The painting was shown at the Royal Academy in 1919 to some public acclaim and was purchased by the British War Memorials Committee. Although Williamson wrote an extensive set of notes to accompany the painting, he left it to others to point out that the figure in the work facing the viewer with an injured hand was a self-portrait. After the War, Williamson established himself as a commercial artist. He designed posters for the London Underground and London Transport between 1922 and 1939 and also for the Empire Marketing Board, the GPO and the Council for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts. In 1930 he was appointed Head of the Chelsea School of Art, a post he held until 1958. During his tenure there he recruited Henry Moore to lead a new department of sculpture at the college. Other artists employed by Williamson as teachers included Graham Sutherland, Ceri Richards and Claude Rogers. Williamson was elected to the London Group in 1933 and, from 1937 to 1943, he served as the Group's chairman. He also exhibited on a regular basis with the New English Art Club and at the Royal Academy. In World War Two, Williamson completed a number of short-term commissions for the War Artists' Advisory Committee on the work of the Post Office in the London Blitz.Year of printing: 1943, country of printing: UK, designer: Harold Sandys Williamson, dimensions (cm): 76x101.5. Good condition, small creases and minor tears in margins.

Original vintage Soviet propaganda poster featuring an illustration of a USSR spacecraft bearing the red communist flag with a hammer and sickle emblem on it and an American spacecraft with a US flag it blasting against each other and sending a lightning bolt down to a man with a gun barrel for a nose and a missile for a hat below the blue background. One of a series from M Abramov's set of political cartoons No Cold War - Space experiments Political resonance. Artwork by Mark Aleksandrovich Abramov (1913-1994). Excellent condition. The Cold War was a period of geopolitical tension between the Soviet Union with its satellite states (the Eastern Bloc), and the United States with its allies (the Western Bloc) after World War II. The historiography of the conflict began between 1946 (the year U.S. diplomat George F. Kennan's "Long Telegram" from Moscow cemented a U.S. foreign policy of containment of Soviet expansionism) and 1947 (the introduction of the Truman Doctrine). The Cold War began to de-escalate after the Revolutions of 1989. The collapse of the USSR in 1991 (when the proto-state Republics of the Soviet Union declared independence) was the end of the Cold War. The term "cold" is used because there was no large-scale fighting directly between the two sides, but they each supported major regional conflicts known as proxy wars. The conflict split the temporary wartime alliance against Nazi Germany and its allies, leaving the USSR and the US as two superpowers with profound economic and political differences. The Apollo–Soyuz Test Project (ASTP), conducted in July 1975, was the first joint U.S.–Soviet space flight, as a symbol of the policy of détente that the two superpowers were pursuing at the time. It involved the docking of an Apollo command and service module and the Soviet Soyuz 19 capsule. The unnumbered Apollo vehicle was left over from the canceled Apollo missions and the last Apollo command and service module to fly. This mission ceremoniously marked the end of the Space Race that had begun in 1957 with the Sputnik launch.Year of printing: 1976, country of printing: Russia , designer: M. Abramov, dimensions (cm): 48x32.

Rare original vintage propaganda poster showing Revolutionary soldiers marching with a banner Freedom in Sergiev Posad of the Moscow Province. The February Revolution, known in Soviet historiography as the February Bourgeois Democratic Revolution and sometimes as the March Revolution, was the first of two revolutions which took place in Russia in 1917. The main events of the revolution took place in and near Petrograd (present-day Saint Petersburg), the then-capital of Russia, where long-standing discontent with the monarchy erupted into mass protests against food rationing on 23 February Old Style (8 March New Style). Revolutionary activity lasted about eight days, involving mass demonstrations and violent armed clashes with police and gendarmes, the last loyal forces of the Russian monarchy. On 27 February O.S. (12 March N.S.) mutinous Russian Army forces sided with the revolutionaries. Three days later Tsar Nicholas II abdicated, ending Romanov dynastic rule and the Russian Empire. A Russian Provisional Government under Prince Georgy Lvov replaced the Council of Ministers of Russia. The revolution appeared to break out without any real leadership or formal planning. Russia had been suffering from a number of economic and social problems, which compounded after the start of World War I in 1914. Disaffected soldiers from the city's garrison joined bread rioters, primarily women in bread lines, and industrial strikers on the streets. As more and more troops deserted, and with loyal troops away at the Front, the city fell into chaos, leading to the overthrow of the Tsar. In all, over 1,300 people were killed during the protests of February 1917.
