Harrap, 1934-1936-1938Footnotes:FINELY BOUND WARTIME PRESENTATION COPIES FROM CHURCHILL TO HIS BANK MANGER T.E.R. HARRIS.This and the following 5 lots were all given by Churchill to his manager and adviser at the Pall Mall branch of Lloyds bank in London, during a five year period from 1943 to 1948. As is well documented in No More Champagne: Churchill and his Money by David Lough (Head of Zeus, 2015), Churchill often found his finances in a precarious position despite lucrative book deals, and he turned to Harris for advice on several occasions. One of these occasions was in 1943, just before Churchill attended the Quebec Conference, when he was negotiating the film rights to Marlborough with Sir Alexander Korda and MGM. As the bidding was being pushed up, it was decided to obtain tax advice from Lloyds and Harris was consulted. As it happened, Harris was acquainted with the well-known and rather eccentric film producer Filippo Del Giudice ('Mr Del' as he was known), who at around the same time was in mid-production on Laurence Olivier's film of Henry V, which Churchill asked to be fashioned as a piece of morale-boosting propaganda for British troops. This may have helped Del Giudice, backed by J. Arthur Rank and his own production company Two Cities, to secure the rights to Marlborough, for a staggering £50,000. Although Marlborough was destined never to be made, the deal transformed Churchill's finances and allowed him to open negotiations to buy back the rights to the History of the English-Speaking Peoples.Provenance: T.E.R. Harris; and thence by descent to the present owner. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 139

BALLARD (J.G.)Series of sixteen letters, fifteen typed, one autograph, variously signed ('J.G. Ballard', 'James', 'Jim Ballard', 'Jim') to Francisco Porrúa ('Mr Porrua', 'Francisco', 'Paco'), his Spanish-language translator, publisher and friend, a wide-ranging correspondence touching on the English literary scene ('...In England, of course, the social novel still commands the greatest attention, though Burroughs to a certain extent may change this, but in general the climate here is hostile to the more imaginative types of fiction, and in particular to anything associated with symbolism, the French variety especially...'), surrealism ('...apart from Max Ernst... the whole movement is written off as a bad joke... and is pretty well identified with Dali and his worst efforts... If you accept Freud's view that symbols are unconsciously associated with censored images one needs to look no further for an explanation...'), agreeing that the climate is beginning to change ('...Burroughs himself of course has had a galvanic effect on the sluggish nervous system of British letters...'), giving updates and notes on his own work such as The Terminal Beach (Playa Terminale) ('...I would only draw attention perhaps to the sacrificial role of the dead Japanese, a symbol of unbetrayable mankind, like Bartok's Miraculous Mandarin... not in any sense anti-H-Bomb propaganda – far from it, of course... the bomb as a symbol of total possibility, as a force which as completely quantified the universe, both the outer world of reality and the inner world of the psyche, in so far as these have separate identities... what a marvellous title by the way...'), delighted with the Spanish publication of The Drowned World (El Mundo Summergido) and looking forward to reading English translations of Borges and Cortazar, mentioning the publication of Crash ('...surprised everyone by selling out its first edition within three months...'), stories such as The Assassination Weapon ('...I have invented a completely new technique that dispenses altogether with the exhausted conventions of sequential narrative and instead presents a fragmentary and cubist flux of related but quantified events that are more like the lives we actually experience... the Katherine Mansfield short story is at last on the decline... I regard each of these stories as a 'condensed novel'...'), other authors ('...my view of things is much closer to Melville and shares almost nothing in common with Conrad, who it seems to me is often guilty of the pathetic fallacy... Melville on the other hand, stresses the direct equivalence of inner and outer reality... Melville's whale is a clear example...'), sympathising with the difficulties of publishing in Argentina ('...perhaps a volatile political atmosphere and runaway inflation create a panic demand for books and newspapers...'), and an unexpected burst of inspiration ('...some kind of surge forward of the middle-aged imagination...Perhaps it ties in with Freud's notion that a man is only truly free when his father dies – after my own died a few years ago I was waiting hourly for something remarkable to happen...'), throughout speaking fondly of their relationship ('...I feel I have the happiest relationship with Minotauro and yourself and I greatly appreciate the immense amount of care and thought which you have given to my writing...'), 18 pages, dust-staining, spotting and creasing, 4to (255 x 205mm.), Charlton Road, Shepperton, 10 February 1966 to 22 May 1989Footnotes:'YOUR CONTINUING INTEREST AND CONFIDENCE IN ME AS A WRITER HAS BEEN HEARTENING FOR TWENTY YEARS. LONG MAY IT PERSIST!'Written over a period of twenty-two years, the correspondence reveals the close and respectful relationship between author and publisher and is full of Ballard's appreciation for Porrúa's work in bringing his works to a Spanish audience ('...my oldest and longest publisher... I have the highest estimate of your abilities and literary sensibility...'). The series begins in 1966, just two years after the death of Ballard's young wife of pneumonia during a holiday in Spain, a dark time for the author personally but also a time of great creativity. He had already published several collections of short stories by this time and was at the forefront of the so-called 'new wave' of science fiction writers. As our letters show '...He also, on numerous occasions, berated the English literary world in the 1950s as both profoundly parochial and hopelessly resistant to modernism and all forms of innovation. Whether or not this was the case the ascription 'science fiction writer' was certainly one he bridled under as the years went by... Ballard seldom spoke about any literary influences, preferring to cite the surrealists—in particular Paul Delvaux and Dalí—as influencing his creative consciousness...' (Will Self, ODNB). Francisco Porrúa (1922-2014), literary translator and publisher, also known as Paco, founded Ediciones Minotauro in Buenos Aires in 1955, and was one of the leading publishers of science fiction and fantasy in the Spanish language, instrumental for bringing the likes of Ballard, Bradbury and Tolkien to a wider audience. Porrúa moved the business to Spain in 1977, prompting Ballard to write in our letters '...Your white house by the sea in Sitges sounds like a small piece of paradise... it must be an exciting time to be a publisher in Spain... an absolute deluge of politics, economics, social topics and so on banned under Franco...'. His obituary in the Buenos Aires Herald noted 'his undeniable gift as a translator and his keen eye for extraordinary, even if unknown or too daring, literary gems', and whilst at publisher Editorial Sudamericana, he is credited with discovering Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude. See also lots in the present sale.Provenance: Francisco Porrúa; thence by descent to his son.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

[TITANIC]: STEAD WILLIAM T. (1849-1912) British newspaper editor who, as a pioneer of investigative journalism, became a controversial figure of the Victorian era. Stead died in the sinking of the RMS Titanic. An extraordinary A.L.S., W T Stead, two pages, 4to, Kingsway, London, 2nd January 1912, to Mr. Cochrane (sic; Charles B. Cochran), on the attractive printed stationery of The Review of Reviews. Stead announces 'I have just witnessed “The Miracle”' and continues, in part, 'But the miracle that impressed me most was the fact that in this Protestant land you are not mobbed by zealous Orangemen. Just think of what you are doing twice a day this blessed Christmas tide! Remember the threatened riot which alarmed the Cabinet when it was proposed to take a solemn procession through the streets on the consecration of the new Catholic Cathedral. The protestant drum was beaten & the police were seriously asking whether the Guards would have to be called out to prevent a dangerous & possibly a bloody affray. Yet that was only one short procession whereas you….are exhibiting twice everyday in the week a gorgeous spectacle with every adventitious aid of music & costume to make the Roman rite attractive to the multitude. The other day I secured a bulky pamphlet labelled “Rome & Germany” by “Watchman” who proclaimed about the existence of an informal conspiracy got up by Rome & Germany for the destruction of the British Empire. “Watchman's” evidence was of the slightest. But if he were to bring out a new edition of his pamphlet he would find in “The Miracle” a startling confirmation of his worst surmises. “The Miracle” was “made in Germany” and it is a…..powerful presentation of the most anti-Protestant doctrines. Think Sir of the effect of this twice a day representation of Catholic ritual to eight thousand subjects of our Protestant King…..Has the great Protestant heart that throbs responsive to the Orange drum ceased to beat? Have you had no protests…(against)….this daring challenge thrown down to Protestant prejudice? I fear that if you presented “The Miracle” at Belfast few of your performers would escape with broken heads. How much Sir do you secure from the secret service money of the Vatican or from the coffers of the Jesuits for this imposing & magnificent propaganda in favour of the Roman Catholic Church? I wrote this to you as a friend & not as one sharing the prejudices of my Orange fellow citizens. It is a mere matter of intellectual curiosity. I wonder whether they are going to take it lying down'. A letter of remarkable content, written just three months before Stead perished in the Titanic. Some extensive, although light, water staining, causing minor wrinkling, and with a few minor tears to the edges. Despite the faults, the text of the letter remains completely legible. About G    Charles B. Cochran (1872-1951) English theatrical manager and impresario who produced some of the most successful musical revues, musicals and plays in the 1920s and 1930s, becoming associated with the works of Noel Coward. In 1911 Cochran had a success with the play The Miracle. The Miracle is a wordless play written by Karl Vollmoller and tells the story of a wayward nun who deserts her convent with a knight, influenced by the music of an evil minstrel. A statue of the Virgin Mary comes to life and takes the physical place of the nun, who makes her way through the world and its many vicissitudes. She is eventually accused of witchcraft, but escapes. Finally the nun returns to the convent with her dying infant, and is forgiven as the statue of the Madonna resumes its place. Cochran worked closely with Max Reinhardt in the creation of the stage production and the play first appeared as a vast spectacle-pantomime at the London Olympia on 21st December 1911. Reinhardt directed the principal actors, cast and musical performers (who numbered around 1,700) and the music was specially composed by Engelbert Humperdinck.

Hitler’s manuscript notes for the first speech  he would make after being released from prison and in which he re-established the Nazi Party, declaring himself to have absolute authorityHITLER ADOLF: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1933-45. An historically important Autograph Manuscript, unsigned, two pages, 4to, n.p. (Munich?) n.d. (February 1925), in German. The holograph notes were prepared by Hitler in advance of a speech (the first following his release from prison) he delivered in Munich’s Burgerbraukeller on 27th February 1925. In the upper left corner Hitler has penned the year 1918 followed by the questions ‘What had happened?’ and ’Just what went wrong’, continuing with a diagram separating the political parties ‘on the Left “Proletariat”….Marxism….finished for good due to criminality’ and ‘on the Right “Bourgeoisie”……bourgeois parties….broke down due to cowardice’ and also including the ‘Volunteer Corps – Nationalist Organisations, Citizens Defending Themselves’, the manuscript continuing with other relevant points he intended to deliver within the speech, ‘Stick to the facts. Parties reject violence (cowardly). Associations are non-political (stupid. They keep pulling their chestnuts out of the fire). During all this the nation is destroyed, plundered domestically and internationally. Could anything still help? Founding of the NSDAP [National Socialist German Workers’ Party, more commonly known as the Nazi Party] Goal. Programme’, and to the second page Hitler writes further notes, ‘Development. 1919-20-21-22-23. 8th November Result: Inflation. 1924 Parliament. Struggle within the movement. Did anyone care about us? No. My release. December 1924, February 27th 1925. Buttmann. The division is impending. I and Held. I and Rohm. I and Ludendorff. Lies. The old movement……The movement? In a different Germany. Here.’ Autograph material of Adolf Hitler is extremely rare in any form, and the present notes are of particular significance in Hitler’s rise to power, this particular speech representing a landmark moment in the re-establishing of the Nazi Party and Hitler cementing his position as ‘der Fuhrer’. A couple of extremely minor, very small holes at the intersection of a couple of folds, VG‘If anyone comes and tries to make conditions to me then I say to him: friend, wait and see what conditions I have to make to you. I am not wooing the masses. After a year you shall judge, my party comrades; if I have not acted correctly, then I shall place my office in your hands again. But until that moment this is the rule: I lead the movement alone, and no one shall set me conditions so long as I personally bear the responsibility. And I once more bear entire responsibility for everything that happens in the movement’ (extract from Adolf Hitler’s two-hour speech delivered at the Burgerbraukeller, Munich, 27th February 1925)Hitler joined the tiny German workers party in 1919, He quickly became its leader. On 9 November 1923, at the height of the great German inflation (on 20 November, one U.S. dollar was equal to four trillion German marks), Hitler risked a coup. He led his followers through the streets of Munich to the Feldherrnhalle, a war memorial, where waiting police opened fire. Sixteen of Hitler’s followers were killed; Hitler himself was arrested, and after a trial that he turned into a political platform, he was sentenced to four years in prison. The party was banned, and its remnants degenerated into squabbling factions. Hitler stood outside the fray, using his time in prison to write Mein Kampf. He was released in December 1924 after serving only nine months of his term, and set about rebuilding the party. The authorities lifted the ban on the Nazi Party on 16 February 1925. Hitler now arranged one of his rhetorical masterpieces: a mass meeting on 27 February to re-establish the party. He chose the same beer hall from which he had launched his abortive revolution fifteen months earlier. Three thousand people packed the hall, and several thousand more were turned away. He entered to the passionate applause of the audience, and gave [a] two hour speech….Its first three-quarters offered nothing that most in the audience had not already heard, and would hear again in Hitler’s future speeches. He reviewed Germany’s history, claiming that past conservative parties had no contact with the masses, and that leftist parties pretended to address the problems faced by ordinary Germans, but actually served the interests of the Jews who controlled them. He also outlined his views on propaganda. In the last quarter of the speech, he moved to re-establish his control of the party. He claimed absolute authority. Anyone unwilling to obey could go his own way. Hitler ‘forgave’ those who had made mistakes in his absence, and demanded that there be no criticism of him or the party for a year. The audience responded with enthusiasm. After the speech, Hitler had arranged…..’a piece of pure theatre’. The Nazi leaders who had fought for supremacy while Hitler was in prison all ‘mounted the platform and, among emotional scenes, with many standing on chairs and tables and the crowd pressing forward from the back of the hall, shook hands, forgave each other, and swore undying loyalty to the leader’……The speech succeeded. Hitler once again was absolute leader of the party’ (from Landmark Speeches of National Socialism, edited by Randall L. Bytwerk, Texas A&M University Press, 2008).

‘it was like the exodus of the children of Israel!!’ GOEBBELS MAGDA: (1901-1945) German Nazi Party member, wife of Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels and herself a close ally, companion and political supporter of Adolf Hitler. Magda Goebbels is sometimes referred to as the unofficial 'first lady' of Nazi Germany. An interesting war date A.L., unsigned, lacking the conclusion, four pages, 8vo, Schwanenwerder, 8th June 1941, to Marina Chaliapin, in German. Goebbels commences her letter by remarking 'You will think that I am a faithless and ungrateful friend for not giving you an answer in so long. I've thought so much of you and always wanted to write', adding that her correspondent's first letter was delayed, but she has now received everything, '6 wonderful stockings, two more in the envelope, and both letters. I thank you a thousand times both for the wonderful, extremely thin, and yet durable stockings and much more for your dear letters'. Goebbels continues to send her own news, in part, 'On May 1st I went to the children, and they were all doing wonderfully. But the house was really too primitive and so I made up my mind and moved the entire household and children, 16 people. I simply rented a large van for 28 people and stowed everything, children, staff, my mother and me. All the luggage, strollers, beds, in short it was like the exodus of the children of Israel!! Now, they are at the Grundlsee…..It's a paradise for the kids! They are doing wonderfully…..You know, Marina, if you feel like it in the summer, we'll go to visit them together. You will be delighted!' and also writes of her eldest son, 'With Harald I had a lot of worries, but now I also feel a lot of joy and pride. He participated in the whole military entry into Crete, and for 14 days it was not possible to learn anything from him. The day before yesterday, I received a wonderful letter from him full of victorious pride and joy in life, and today a message from his general that he is fine and that he is still on duty. It was a very difficult day for me. The fear that something would happen to him or that he would be taken prisoner by the English made me very sick and I didn't want to see or speak to anyone. I was all alone in Schwanenwerder and had even sent the staff away.' The final line of text in the letter as it exists today refers to her former sister-in-law, Ella Quandt, 'a dear friend of mine'. A partial letter of extraordinary content for its references to the biblical book of Exodus (in which Moses liberates the children of Israel from Egyptian slavery, leading them to freedom and then receiving the Ten Commandments), as well as her son, Harald, and the six children that she had with Joseph Goebbels, the youngest of which had been born in 1940, and who were ultimately all killed by Magda with cyanide capsules in the Fuhrerbunker on 1st May 1945, before she and her husband committed suicide the same day. VG     Marina Chaliapin (1912-2009) Russian ballerina & actress who was crowned Miss. Russia in 1931. Daughter of Russian opera singer Feodor Chaliapin (1873-1938) widely regarded as one of the finest bass singers of the 20th century, and his mistress Marina Petsold (1882-1964) who became the singer's second wife in 1927. Marina was married to Luigi Freddi (1895-1977) the Italian journalist and Minister of Culture who edited the journal Il Popolo d'Italia and who was also hugely influential in Italian political cinema in the second half of the 1930s and beginning of the 1940s. Harald Quandt (1921-1967) German Lieutenant in the Luftwaffe during World War II who took part in the Battle of Crete in 1941 and later fought in Russia and Italy, where he was injured. In 1944 he was captured by the Allied troops in Italy and was released in 1947. Harald was Magda's eldest son, from her first marriage, and the only one of her children to survive her. After the war Quandt helped run the industrial empire which had been left to him by his father, and that still continues today.

An exceptional pair of signed portraits presented to Marina Chaliapin GOEBBELS JOSEPH: (1897-1945) German Politician, Reich Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany 1933-45 & MAGDA (1901-1945) German Nazi Party member, wife of Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels and herself a close ally, companion and political supporter of Adolf Hitler. Magda Goebbels is sometimes referred to as the unofficial 'first lady' of Nazi Germany. An exceptional pair of vintage signed and inscribed 8.5 x 11.5 photographs by both Joseph and Magda Goebbels individually, the images depicting Joseph in a formal head and shoulders study and Magda elegantly seated in a three-quarter length pose wearing a string pearl necklace and brooch. The latter photograph bears the studio signature of the Ernst Sandau photography studio. Joseph Goebbels has inscribed and signed ('Dr. Goebbels') his image in German, in bold, dark fountain pen ink, also adding the date, 3rd December 1941, in his hand and Magda Goebbels has inscribed and signed ('Magda') her image in German, in bold, dark fountain pen ink, also adding the place and date, Berlin, 3rd December 1941, in her hand. Both photographs are inscribed to Marina Chaliapin, thereby making them interesting association pieces, and it is rare to find a pair of portraits signed by both Joseph and Magda Goebbels of this size and quality. Both photographs are very slightly neatly trimmed to the edges, the image of Joseph has some minor spots of foxing to the background in the upper left corner and Magda's image has some silvering to the edges. The studio soon developed a prestigious clientele, including Tsar Nicholas II and Queen Mary, and became the most popular studio amongst the members of Berlin's high society. After World War I it was taken over by the German photographer Suse Byk (1884-1943) until its closure in 1938. Byk was born in Berlin in 1884 into a Jewish family of Ukrainian origin.

KAMMERHOFER KONSTANTIN: (1899-1958) Austrian SS-Gruppenfuhrer who was in charge of the Flemish SS in Brussels 1941-42 and from 1943-45 served as the representative of Reichsfuhrer SS Heinrich Himmler in the independent state of Croatia. After the war Kammerhofer was extradited to Austria for trial, although fled and went into hiding as a construction worker in Hanover. T.L.S., Kammerhofer, one page, 4to, Vienna, 24th December 1940, to Gunther Kaufmann, in German. Kammerhofer thanks his correspondent for their contribution and continues 'I also wish you all the best for the coming year of the war. May you reap rich successes in your hard work here in Vienna in the coming year as well'. Two file holes to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature, VG     Gunther Kaufmann served as head of the Riech Propaganda office in Vienna.

[JFK’S NAZI SPY LOVER]: [ARVAD INGA] (1913-1973) Danish journalist and Hollywood gossip columnist who (falsely) claimed to have had three personal meetings with Adolf Hitler and who also (accurately) entered into a romantic relationship with John F. Kennedy during World War II. These two matters led to J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI investigating Arvad as a potential Nazi spy. A fascinating group of T.Ls.S., some of them carbon typed retained copies, etc., all relating to the Nazi’s own investigation of Inga Arvad within the Reichs Chancellery and of claims (published in various articles Arvad authored) that she had been received by Adolf Hitler on several occasions, including (in chronological order) a carbon typed retained copy of a letter from Dr. Helmuth von Feldmann, a senior member of Joseph Goebbels’ Ministry of Propaganda staff, one page, 4to, Berlin, 26th March 1936, to the German Embassy in Copenhagen, replying to their request of December 1935, via the foreign office, for further information regarding Arvad and informing them that she was crowned as a Beauty Queen in 1932, then married ‘a supposed Egyptian prince [Kamal Abdel Nabi; in fact a diplomat] in Paris, who was imprisoned soon after’, returned to Copenhagen penniless and worked as an amateur journalist writing novellas for women’s magazines before developing a relationship with the Jewish filmmaker [Paul] Fejos, obtaining a leading role in a film which failed in Denmark, and also stating ‘In Germany she allegedly had relationships with Mrs. Goebbels and Mrs. Goring’ and that ‘Danish correspondents were astonished to report that she received an interview with the Fuhrer, even though she had no assignment and no relationship with Berlingske Tidende’, and in concluding adding that the Foreign Office has also been informed; a T.L.S. by Herluf Andersen, a Danish journalist, one page, 4to, Copenhagen, 17th August 1936, to Adolf Hitler, in German, explaining that he has been invited to attend the Nazi Party Rally in Nuremberg, and is currently working for the right-wing Berlingske Tidende, and would like to take the opportunity of his visit to meet Hitler for a personal interview, adding that the questions will be submitted ahead of time so that Hitler can decide whether he answers all of the questions or not, as well as choosing any other topics he may want to discuss. With two official stamps, one from Adolf Hitler’s Private Chancellery, to the head, and accompanied by two further related covering letters; a carbon typed retained copy of a letter from Georg Ferdinand Duckwitz (1904-1973, German diplomat who served as an attaché for Nazi Germany in occupied Denmark during World War II and who was instrumental in Danish resistance groups rescuing 95% of Denmark’s Jewish population ahead of their intended deportation in 1943), three pages, 4to, Copenhagen, 10th September 1936, in German, expressing the view that the embassy has always rejected requests for interviews with Hitler from Danish press representatives, and complaining of the underhand tactics used by Inga Arvad following one brief meeting she had with Hitler in November, remarking that she is only regarded as a casual journalist in Denmark ‘who knows how to turn occasional interviews and articles into a business’ and that she had offered the article following her meeting with Hitler to the highest bidder from the major newspapers, adding that there is outrage and a mood of incomprehensibility within journalistic circles of how it was possible that Arvad, married to a Jew, managed to obtain an unauthorised interview with Hitler, and concluding that Herluf Andersen would be a more suitable candidate to interview the Fuhrer; and a brief T.L.S. by Wilhelm Wolf (1897-1939, Austrian politician and historian, the last Austrian foreign minister before the de facto annexation of Austria by the Nazi German Empire in 1938), one page, 4to, Berlin, 18th September 1936, to the Secretary of State and head of the Presidential Chancellery, in German, returning various enclosures, and with various pencil annotations, one stating, in full, ‘For the attention of the office. According to the report here from Copenhagen, Frau Arvad is supposed recently to have had an audience with the Fuhrer. Do we hold any information about this?’, to the verso of Wolf’s letter is a T.L.S. by Werner Kiewitz (1891-1965, German diplomat, a ministerial adviser in the Reichs Chancellery), one page, 4to, Berlin, 1st December 1936, in German, stating, in part, ‘The files of the Presidential Chancellery show no evidence that the Danish woman, Frau Inga Arvad, asked for, and had, a conversation with the Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor. Jung, a counsellor in the Reich Chancellery, informed me, in answer to a telephone enquiry, that – according to papers held there – Frau Arvad was merely received by the Fuhrer at the end of 1935, but that, on the other hand, there is no trace of an audience in September 1936 on the files. The Reich Chancellery has, in addition, obtained from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs a copy of a report from the German embassy in Copenhagen, dated 10th September 1936, and as a result, is now in the picture as to the background of the journalist Frau Arvad. Care is to be taken that Frau Arvad is not received again. It is also impossible to tell from the files whether the Dane, Herluf Andersen, perhaps had an opportunity to talk to the Fuhrer, on the occasion of the Reich Party Rally, to which – according to his letter – he was invited. It can certainly be seen from the above that there are further steps to be taken in this matter’. An intriguing group of documents linking two of the 20th century’s most famous political leaders, Adolf Hitler and John F. Kennedy, via a Danish journalist who may have been a Nazi spy. Each of the documents with file holes to the left edges, some tears, a few small areas of paper loss, and light overall age wear, generally G, 6 The life and career of the Danish journalist Inga Arvad would appear to be a tangled web of fact and fantasy. Her claim of having been Hitler’s guest at the 1936 Summer Olympics, and of having been received by him personally on three occasions, are simply not true based on the evidence of the present documents. In one article she wrote her description of Hitler was later translated into English as ‘You immediately like him….The eyes, showing a kind heart, stare right at you. They sparkle with force’. Another source claims that, on meeting Hitler, Arvad asked the Fuhrer whether he was wearing a bullet proof vest. His response (one that seems totally unlikely and without foundation) was ‘Frisk me’, which Arvad claimed to have done, and found that he was not wearing any such protection. The Beauty Queen also claimed that Hitler had told her that she was a ‘perfect example of Nordic beauty’. Owing to restrictions imposed by The Saleroom we are unable to display the full description for this lot.
