Lot 4410

Original vintage World War Two propaganda poster commissioned by the C.E.M.A. (Council for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts - later to become the Arts Council of Northern Ireland), it features a painting by the artist Rodrigo Moynihan (1910-1990) titled 'May - A Picnic' and it was originally intended to be hung "where war workers congregate". In 1940, during the Second World War, the Council for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts (CEMA), was appointed to help promote and maintain British culture. Chaired by Lord De La Warr, President of the Board of Education, the Council was government-funded and after the war was renamed the Arts Council of Great Britain. The interest in the arts during World War II led to the first government subsidy of the arts in Britain with the founding of the Arts Council in 1946, championed by Jenny Lee. Moynihan was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, in 1910, to Herbert James Moynihan, a fruit broker, and Maria (née de la Puerta). His Anglo-Spanish family moved to London in 1918 and then to Wisconsin. A winter in Rome 1927–1928 inspired him to devote himself to art, and in 1928 he started studying at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. In the 1930s he gained a reputation as a pioneer of abstract painting in England as a member of the Objective Abstraction movement.[4][5] Moynihan was later attracted to social realism and became associated from 1937 with the Euston Road School. War artist Moynihan served in the British Army from 1940 to 1943, first in the Royal Artillery and then doing camouflage work. Following an injury, he was given a full-time salaried commission by the War Artists' Advisory Committee, WAAC, having previously completed a number of short-term contracts for the Committee. He completed a number of portraits of ATS and senior, male, military figures for this contract and also for subsequent shorter WAAC contracts. Moynihan was appointed an Associate Member of the Royal Academy in 1944. After the war, he was professor of painting at the Royal College of Art 1948–1957, and was elected a full member of the Royal Academy in 1954. At this period, he was in demand for official portraits, and executed commissions of amongst others Princess Elizabeth (1946) and Prime Minister Clement Attlee (1947). He changed direction from 1957, resigning from the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy and returning to abstraction, working outside England in Europe and North America. From 1971 onwards he was inspired to return to figurative painting in the form of large-scale studio still-lives, unordered, unarranged and apparently random. One of these such paintings was, The shelf, objects and shadows - front view (1982–83). This return to figuration also drew him to move back towards portraiture – with portraits of friends leading to renewed commissions by the end of the 1970s. Notable portraits of this period include Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (1983–85; National Portrait Gallery, London) and Dame Peggy Ashcroft (1984; National Portrait Gallery). Year of printing: 1943, country of printing: UK, designer: Rodrigo Moynihan, dimensions (cm): 76x101.5. Good condition, creases and minor tears in margins.

The wall behind the figures has red and black writing showing support for women's rights and women's liberation. Published by Plymouth Square Center - Conshohocken, PA. Second-wave feminism is a period of feminist activity and thought that began in the United States in the early 1960s and lasted roughly two decades. It quickly spread across the Western world, with an aim to increase equality for women by gaining more than just enfranchisement. Though it is widely accepted that the movement lasted from the 1960s into the early 1980s, the exact years of the movement are more difficult to pinpoint and are often disputed. The movement is usually believed to have begun in 1963, when Betty Friedan published The Feminine Mystique, and President John F. Kennedy's Presidential Commission on the Status of Women released its report on gender inequality. The movement grew with legal victories such as the Equal Pay Act of 1963, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Griswold v. Connecticut Supreme Court ruling of 1965. Original vintage Soviet propaganda poster titled 'A message to the Betrayed Brothers in the White Army Trenches'. It shows a man fighting a hammer against a monstruous snake representing the Tsar, the Priest and the Rich. The Russian Civil War was a multi-party civil war in the former Russian Empire immediately after the two Russian Revolutions of 1917, as many factions vied to determine Russia's political future. The two largest combatant groups were the Red Army, fighting for the Bolshevik form of socialism led by Vladimir Lenin, and the loosely allied forces known as the White Army, which included diverse interests favouring political monarchism, economic capitalism and alternative forms of socialism, each with democratic and anti-democratic variants. In addition, rival militant socialists and non-ideological Green armies fought against both the Bolsheviks and the Whites. Eight foreign nations intervened against the Red Army, notably the former Allied military forces from the World War and the pro-German armies. The Red Army eventually defeated the White Armed Forces of South Russia in Ukraine and the army led by Admiral Alexander Kolchak to the east in Siberia in 1919. The remains of the White forces commanded by Pyotr Wrangel were beaten in Crimea and evacuated in late 1920. Lesser battles of the war continued on the periphery for two more years, and minor skirmishes with the remnants of the White forces in the Far East continued well into 1923. The war ended in 1923 in the sense that Bolshevik communist control of the newly formed Soviet Union was now assured, although armed national resistance in Central Asia was not completely crushed until 1934. Original vintage World War Two propaganda poster showing the flags of the Allied Countries and a handsake, set against a green background. The Allies of World War II, called the United Nations from the 1 January 1942 declaration, were the countries that together opposed the Axis powers during the Second World War (1939–1945). The Allies promoted the alliance as a means to control German, Japanese and Italian aggression. At the start of the war on 1 September 1939, the Allies consisted of France, Poland and the United Kingdom, as well as their dependent states, such as British India. Within days they were joined by the independent Dominions of the British Commonwealth: Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. After the start of the German invasion of North Europe until the Balkan Campaign, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, and Yugoslavia joined the Allies. After first having cooperated with Germany in invading Poland whilst remaining neutral in the Allied-Axis conflict, the Soviet Union perforce joined the Allies in June 1941 after being invaded by Germany. The United States provided war materiel and money all along, and officially joined in December 1941 after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. China had already been in a prolonged war with Japan since the Marco Polo Bridge Incident of 1937, but officially joined the Allies in 1941. The alliance was formalised by the Declaration by United Nations, from 1 January 1942. However, the name "United Nations" was rarely used to describe the Allies during the war. The leaders of the "Big Three"—the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States—controlled Allied strategy; relations between the United Kingdom and the United States were especially close. The Big Three together with China were referred as a "trusteeship of the powerful", then were recognized as the Allied "Big Four" in the Declaration by United Nations and later as the "Four Policemen" of the United Nations. After the war ended, the Allied nations became the basis of the modern United Nations.Year of printing: 1940s, country of printing: USA, designer: Unknown, dimensions (cm): 70.5x55. Original vintage propaganda poster for the publication Musee des Horreurs ("Gallery of Horrors") issue No.1, titled "Boule de Juif" (Jew's Ball). This poster features a drawing by Lenepveu (pseudonym) showing a caricature of Joseph Reinach as a monkey. At the time of the Alfred Dreyfus original trial, Reinach, an author and politician, attempted to secure a public hearing of the case, and later demandedits revision. Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French army, was falsely accused of treason for selling military secrets to Germany and convicted of treason by a secret military commission, Dreyfus was stripped of his rank and imprisoned on Devils' Island. It was only after the affair had dragged on for a dozen years that Dreyfus was finally cleared of all charges by the court of appeals. French society was deeply divided by the Dreyfus case and hostile rhetoric led to widespread anti-Semitic expression in the popular press. This series of intensely provocative color lithographs which showed figures in the pro-Dreyfus camp as disgusting half-animal creatures, was only one example of the virulent reaction to the Dreyfus Affair. The publication of Musee des Horreurs was halted by the police after 51 numbers had been published.Year of printing: 1899, country of printing: France, designer: V. Lenepveu (pseudonym), dimensions (cm): 65.5x50. Poor condition, creases and tears, large tear with tape residue, reinforced on reverse with water soluble tape.

Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), and Guernica (1937), a dramatic portrayal of the bombing of Guernica by the German and Italian airforces during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso's work is often categorized into periods. While the names of many of his later periods are debated, the most commonly accepted periods in his work are the Blue Period (1901–1904), the Rose Period (1904–1906), the African-influenced Period (1907–1909), Analytic Cubism (1909–1912), and Synthetic Cubism (1912–1919), also referred to as the Crystal period. The Royal Navy suffered heavy losses in the first two years of the war, including the carriers Courageous, Glorious and Ark Royal, the battleships Royal Oak and Barham and the battlecruiser Hood in the European Theatre, and the carrier Hermes, the battleship Prince of Wales, the battlecruiser Repulse and the heavy cruisers Exeter, Dorsetshire and Cornwall in the Asian Theatre. Original vintage Soviet Anti-Imperialist propaganda poster titled: The Tsar, the Priest and the Rich Man on the Shoulders of the Labouring People (Tsar, Pop i Bogach). This poster shows the Tsar and the Priest being carried by the miserable and dying labouring people with the rich man controlling the masses with his whip. This poster is supposed to represent how things were like for Russia before the October Revolution. Communist propaganda in the Soviet Union was extensively based on the Marxist–Leninist ideology to promote the Communist Party line. In the Stalin era, it penetrated even social and natural sciences giving rise to various pseudo-scientific theories such as Lysenkoism, whereas fields of real knowledge, as genetics, cybernetics and comparative linguistics were condemned and forbidden as "bourgeois pseudoscience". Propaganda was one of the many ways the Soviet Union tried to control its citizens. The main Soviet Union censorship body, Glavlit, was employed not only to eliminate any undesirable printed materials, but also "to ensure that the correct ideological spin was put on every published item". In the Stalin era, deviation from the dictates of official propaganda was punished by execution and labor camps. In the post-Stalin era, these punitive measures were replaced by punitive psychiatry, prison, denial of work and loss of citizenship. "Today a man only talks freely to his wife – at night, with the blankets pulled over his head", said writer Isaac Babel privately to a trusted friend. Alexander Petrovich Apsit ( Latvian Aleksandrs Aps?tis, Russian ????????? ???????? ????? , born March 25, 1880 in Riga , † September 19, 1943 in Ludwigslust ) was a Latvian artist. Apsit was born into a Rigenser worker family, who moved to Saint Petersburg in 1894 . From 1898 to 1899 he attended the drawing school and was a student in the studio of Lew Dmitriew-Kawkaski. From 1900 to 1910 Apsit was a member of the Moscow art circle "Sreda" (Wednesday). During this time he worked for various Petersburg magazines and designed war posters. After the October Revolution Apsit was commissioned by the Soviet State Publishing House to design revolutionary posters, having gained experience in political propaganda. In the fall of 1919, when General Yudenich's troops had moved up to 30 km to Petrograd, the poster "Protecting Petrograd with the Breast (Using Their Own Life)" was created. The posters designed by Apsit were highly detailed, finely graduated drawings with many figures accompanied by explanatory texts. They were under the influence of the Lubok , the Russian Folkpicture. His poster "A Year of Proletarian Dictatorship" is considered a milestone in Soviet poster history. Designed for the first anniversary of the October Revolution, it shows the most important elements of the visual language of the Revolution poster: in the foreground a farmer with a red flag and scythe and a blacksmith with a hammer, the emblems of fallen capitalismBoth of them are standing guard in front of a field of simple, flag-bearing farm laborers, in the background an industrialized city and a rising sun. Alexander Apsit developed on his posters the hammer, the sickle and the red star, the symbols of the Soviet communist era. He is considered the founder of Soviet poster art. In 1919, during the advance of General Denikin , Apsit left Moscow. After the Civil War, he worked in Latvia as a book illustrator. In addition, he designed advertising posters and greetings cards as well as the wrapping paper of chocolates and confectionery of the company Vilhelms ?uze. In 1939, Alexander Apsit moved to Germany, where he died in 1943.Year of printing: 1918, country of printing: Russia, designer: Aleksandr Petrovich Apsit, dimensions (cm): 106.5x73.5. Original vintage Soviet propaganda poster titled Citizens, preserve historical monuments by Russian artist Nikolai Nikolaevich Kupreyanov (1894–1933). The main feature of communist attitudes towards the arts and artists in the years 1918-1929 was relative freedom, with significant experimentation in several different styles in an effort to find a distinctive Soviet style of art. In many respects, the NEP period was a time of relative freedom and experimentation for the social and cultural life of the Soviet Union. The government tolerated a variety of trends in these fields, provided they were not overtly hostile to the regime. In art and literature, numerous schools, some traditional and others radically experimental, proliferated. Communist writers Maxim Gorky and Vladimir Mayakovsky were active during this time, but other authors, many of whose works were later repressed, published work lacking socialist political content. Film, as a means of influencing a largely illiterate society, received encouragement from the state; much of cinematographer Sergei Eisenstein's best work dates from this period. Education, under Commissar Anatoliy Lunacharskiy, entered a phase of experimentation based on progressive theories of learning. At the same time, the state expanded the primary and secondary school system, and introduced night schools for working adults. The quality of higher education was affected by admissions policies that preferred entrants from the proletarian class over those from bourgeois backgrounds, regardless of the applicants' qualifications.Year of printing: 1919, country of printing: Russia, designer: Nikolai Nikolaevich Kupreyanov, dimensions (cm): 75x51.5. Joan Chandos Baez (/ba?z/; born January 9, 1941) is an American singer, songwriter, musician and activist. Her contemporary folk music often includes songs of protest or social justice. Baez is generally regarded as a folk singer, but her music has diversified since the counterculture era of the 1960s and encompasses genres such as folk rock, pop, country and gospel music. She began her recording career in 1960 and achieved immediate success. Her first three albums, Joan Baez, Joan Baez, Vol. 2 and Joan Baez in Concert, all achieved gold record status. Although a songwriter herself, Baez generally interprets other composers' work, having recorded songs by the Allman Brothers Band, the Beatles, Jackson Browne, Leonard Cohen, Woody Guthrie, Violeta Parra, the Rolling Stones, Pete Seeger, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder and many others. She was one of the first major artists to record the songs of Bob Dylan in the early 1960s; Baez was already an internationally celebrated artist and did much to popularize his early songwriting efforts. On her later albums she has found success interpreting the work of more recent songwriters, including Ryan Adams, Josh Ritter, Steve Earle, Natalie Merchant and Joe Henry. Baez's acclaimed songs include "Diamonds & Rust" and covers of Phil Ochs's "There but for Fortune" and The Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". She is also known for "Farewell, Angelina", "Love Is Just a Four-Letter Word", "Forever Young", "Here's to You", "Joe Hill", "Sweet Sir Galahad" and "We Shall Overcome". Baez performed fourteen songs at the 1969 Woodstock Festival and has displayed a lifelong commitment to political and social activism in the fields of nonviolence, civil rights, human rights and the environment. Baez was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 7, 2017. The Grateful Dead was an American rock band formed in 1965 in Palo Alto, California. The band is known for its eclectic style, which fused elements of rock, folk, country, jazz, bluegrass, blues, gospel, and psychedelic rock; for live performances of lengthy instrumental jams; and for its devoted fan base, known as "Deadheads". "Their music", writes Lenny Kaye, "touches on ground that most other groups don't even know exists". These various influences were distilled into a diverse and psychedelic whole that made the Grateful Dead "the pioneering Godfathers of the jam band world". The band was ranked 57th by Rolling Stone magazine in its The Greatest Artists of All Time issue. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and a recording of their May 8, 1977, performance at Cornell University's Barton Hall was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2012. Rare original vintage propaganda poster showing revolutionary troops in Moscow at Voskresenskay Square near Kremlin during February Revolution. The February Revolution, known in Soviet historiography as the February Bourgeois Democratic Revolution and sometimes as the March Revolution, was the first of two revolutions which took place in Russia in 1917. The main events of the revolution took place in and near Petrograd (present-day Saint Petersburg), the then-capital of Russia, where long-standing discontent with the monarchy erupted into mass protests against food rationing on 23 February Old Style (8 March New Style). Revolutionary activity lasted about eight days, involving mass demonstrations and violent armed clashes with police and gendarmes, the last loyal forces of the Russian monarchy. On 27 February O.S. (12 March N.S.) mutinous Russian Army forces sided with the revolutionaries. Three days later Tsar Nicholas II abdicated, ending Romanov dynastic rule and the Russian Empire. A Russian Provisional Government under Prince Georgy Lvov replaced the Council of Ministers of Russia. The revolution appeared to break out without any real leadership or formal planning. Russia had been suffering from a number of economic and social problems, which compounded after the start of World War I in 1914. Disaffected soldiers from the city's garrison joined bread rioters, primarily women in bread lines, and industrial strikers on the streets. As more and more troops deserted, and with loyal troops away at the Front, the city fell into chaos, leading to the overthrow of the Tsar. In all, over 1,300 people were killed during the protests of February 1917. Voskresenskaya Square (Resurrection Square), after the other name of Iberian Gate, Resurrection Gate was renamed after the October Revolution in 1918. Revolution Square is located in the center of Moscow, in Tverskoy District, northwest of Red Square. The square has the shape of an arc running from the southwest to the north and is bounded by Manezhnaya Square to the southwest, Okhotny Ryad to the north, and the buildings separating it from Nikolskaya Street to the south and to the east. It is one of the Central Squares of Moscow. The continuation of the Revolution Square north behind Okhotny Ryad is Teatralnaya Square.Year of printing: 1917, country of printing: Russia, designer: Unknown, dimensions (cm): 62.5x84.5. Original vintage British WWII propaganda poster issued by the Ministry of Health: Will you give a helping hand too? Your help is wanted. See your local billeting officer now! Printed for Her Majesty Stationery Office by J. Weiner Ltd. The evacuation of civilians in Britain during the Second World War was designed to protect people, especially children, from the risks associated with aerial bombing of cities by moving them to areas thought to be less at risk. Operation Pied Piper, which began on 1 September 1939, officially relocated more than 3.5 million people. There were further waves of official evacuation and re-evacuation from the south and east coasts in June 1940, when a seaborne invasion was expected, and from affected cities after the Blitz began in September 1940. There were also official evacuations from the UK to other parts of the British Empire, and many non-official evacuations within and from the UK. Other mass movements of civilians included British citizens arriving from the Channel Islands, and displaced people arriving from continental Europe. The Government Evacuation Scheme was developed during summer 1938 by the Anderson Committee and implemented by the Ministry of Health. The country was divided into zones, classified as either "evacuation", "neutral", or "reception", with priority evacuees being moved from the major urban centres and billeted on the available private housing in more rural areas. Each zone covered roughly a third of the population, although several urban areas later bombed had not been classified for evacuation. In early 1939, the reception areas compiled lists of available housing. Space was found for about 2000 people, and the government also constructed camps which provided a few thousand additional spaces.Year of printing: 1940s, country of printing: UK , designer: Unknown , dimensions (cm): 76x51. Good condition, folded as issued, tears and creases in margins.
