JULIUS STREICHER'S ANTI-SEMITIC CHILDREN'S BOOK: 'DO NOT TRUST A FOX IN A GREEN PASTURE OR A JEW UPON HIS OATH!' A vile piece of Nazi propaganda, the 'instructional' children's book 'Trau keinem Fuchs auf gruner Heid und keinem Jud auf seinem Eid' ('Do Not Trust a Fox in a Green Pasture or a Jew Upon His Oath!'), by Elvira Bauer and published by Julius Streicher's Sturmer Publishing Company in 1936. The brightly-colored hardbound picture book was issued to school children as a supplement to other anti-Semitic 'primers' such as 'The Poisonous Mushroom'. It is replete with lurid imagery of dirty, dark-skinned Jews up to no good among innocent and angelic Aryan children, and highlights the heightened Nazi perception of racial differences with every stanza. The book begins with an account of how the lazy Jews historically made their race bothersome to others, and quips: 'Look, children, and the two compare, The German and the Jew. Take a good look at the two In the picture drawn for you. A joke - you think it is only that? Easy to guess which is which, I say: The German stands up, the Jew gives way'. This rhetoric amplifies as the book progresses with narratives against Jews and their alleged love of money, Jewish lawyers swindling a simpleton farmer, luring Aryan women away from their men with gold and jewels, and so forth. It goes so far as to include an unabashed glorification of Streicher himself: 'To him we owe our deepest thanks That German stock remains so sound. The Jews in turn he's taught a lesson, The value of a healthy folk. He let them feel the German spirit Twixt Jew and us he's shown the difference. That is Streicher!!'. Of particular note is an image of a wealthy Jew driving a pauper and his daughter from his doorstep, a Jewish butcher serving Aryans cuts of meat from a filthy butcher shop, and ignorant Jewish children tormenting the school-loving Aryan kids. The book concludes with a bucolic image of Hitler Youth on the march and the verse: 'From this picture may be seen, Hitler Youth in splendid mien, From smallest to the biggest boy. All are husky, tough, and strong. They love their German Führer And God in Heaven they fear. But the Jews they must despise! They're not like these boys, So Jews must just give way!' This piece of anti-Semitism was one of the most vitriolic published by Streicher. With its bright illustrations and appealing typeface, it enjoyed tremendous popularity and had a run of over 100,000 copies. This particular example is in near fine condition with just slight bumps to the edges and minor toning.

Lot 438

'JUD SUSS' FILM PROGRAM A rare printed program from the notorious propaganda film 'Jew Suss' commissioned by Joseph Goebbels and completed in 1940. The movie played on basic Nazi stereotypes of Jews having hooked noses and being materialistic, immoral, cunning, untrustworthy and physically unattractive. The main character, a Jew, unsuccessfully pursues and then rapes a non-Jewish woman, who then commits suicide. He is executed, and all Jews are expelled from the state. The film was a huge success in Germany, having over 20 million views. The program is 8pp. 11.5 X 8.75 in., Berlin, 1940, released as an issue of the magazine 'Illustrierter Film-Kurier', lists cast members and gives a synopsis of the film, with several scenes depicted within including the title character pursuing his 'prey'. Very light folds, else fine.

Lot 442

'THE ETERNAL JEW' FILM PROGRAM A rare printed program from the notorious propaganda film 'Der Ewige Jude' ('The Wandering Jew', later retitled 'The Eternal Jew'), a 1940 antisemitic Nazi propaganda film, presented as a documentary. The film was directed by Fritz Hippler at the insistence of Nazi Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels. The film consists of feature and documentary footage combined with materials filmed shortly after the Nazi occupation of Poland. The program is 8pp. 11.5 x 8.75 in., Berlin, 1940, released as an issue of the magazine 'Illustrierter Film-Kurier'. Actor Peter Lorre, in character as the child molester in the film 'M', is inexplicably featured on the cover (he was also Jewish), and the program is filled with photographs of orthodox Jews, with an African carving included for 'comparison'. A really vile and amateurish rag which further incited persecution of Germany's Jews.

Lot 446

ADOLF HITLER ANTI-SEMITIC PROPAGANDA POSTER German propaganda poster, 9.5 x 13.5, (Munich: Zentralverlag der NSDAP), July, 1941, quotes Adolf Hitler: 'In Bolshevism we must see the attempt undertaken by the Jews in the twentieth century to achieve world domination. Adolf Hitler' Fine condition.

Lot 452

ANTI-SEMITIC U.S. ONE DOLLAR BILL Anti-Semitic German propaganda in the form of a two-sided U.S. one dollar bill. This item would be thrown about the streets, and when picked-up, the bill would fold open to 12.25 x 2.75, the text within containing a vile attack on U.S. Treasurer Henry Morgenthau, Jr. and Jews in general. In part: '...the Jew MORGENTHAU, junior, related to the great sharks of international finance...THIS MONEY IS JEWISH!...This money has value only if it is signed MORGENTHAU...THIS DOLLAR PAID FOR THE JEWISH WAR...Money has no smell...BUT THE JEW HAS ONE!...' Tiny repair to one fold, else very good. The Nazis went to great lengths to demonize Jews not only in Germany but in occupied countries as well. Rare!

Lot 453

ANTI-SEMITIC, ANTI BLACK PROPAGANDA MAP OF FRANCE Excellent double-sided propaganda map, 22 x 29.5 in. unfolded, offered as a supplement to the NSDAP propaganda magazine 'Illustrierter Beobachter' ('Illustrated Observer'), depicting France on one side and its overseas colonial holdings on the other. Most notably, when folded, the map displays a derogatory representation of the French empire beneath the title 'Frankreichs Schuld' ('France’s Guilt'). France is represented by an overblown stereotypical representation of an African colonial soldier with his arms crossed and a French tricolor attached to his rifle bearing the motto 'Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite'. Behind him stands a stereotypical depiction of a Jewish banker, as well as Free French general Charles de Gaulle and a second colonial soldier. Very good.

Lot 501

A 1936 Berlin Olympics XI Olympiad Participants Bronze Medal, 2.75 in. dia., featuring five athletes pulling the ropes of the Olympic bell on the obverse, and the Olympic Bell embossed with the German eagle on the reverse. At the edge of the medal is the name of Otto Placzek, the Berlin sculptor who designed the medal. Interestingly and appropriately, the IOC noted the risk of 'politicizing' the Olympics and forbid Hitler and Goebbels from adding a swastika or any propaganda on official medals. Light traces of oxidation throughout, else very good.

Lot 53

ALBERT BORMANN (1902 - 1989) Wehrmacht general and adjutant to Adolf Hitler. Hitler much liked and trusted Bormann, although he and his brother Martin disliked each other intensely. File holes at left, else very good.

Lot 841

BRITISH FASCISTS PIN AND EPHEMERA A fine assemblage of material from the British fascist organizations, includes a rare numbered pin issued to members of the Imperial Fascist League, a British fascist political movement founded by Arnold Leese in 1929 after he broke away from the British Fascists. It included a blackshirted paramilitary arm called the Fascists Legion, modeled after the Italian Fascists. The group espoused antisemitism and the dominance of the 'Aryan race' in a 'Racial Fascist Corporate State', especially after Leese met Nazi Party propagandist Julius Streicher, the virulently racist publisher of Der Stürmer; the group later indirectly received funding from the Nazis. Although it had only between 150 and 500 members at maximum, its public profile was higher than its membership numbers would indicate. The pin is 1 in. in diameter, polished steel with black enameled face, bearing the 'F' emblem and a cross within a flower, surrounded by the motto: 'For King and Country'. The reverse bears a pin and catch, with membership number '36936' and maker's mark from 'Birmingham Medal Co.' Sold with ten pieces of propaganda issued by the Union of Fascists (B.U.F.), a British fascist political party formed in 1932 by Oswald Mosley. Mosley changed its name to the British Union of Fascists and National Socialists in 1936 and, in 1937, to the British Union. In 1939, following the start of the Second World War, the party was proscribed by the British government and in 1940 it was disbanded. The pieces, set in a frame, include 'The Fascist's Motto', 'The Labour-Communist Double-Cross', an anti-BBC text, etc. Overall very good.

Lot 914

Original World War I propaganda poster, 20 x 30 in. color, featuring a hopeful immigrant family as they depart from a steamship with the American Flag waving above them, published by 'Heywood Strasser & Voigt Litho. Co. N.Y.' At the top left appears the title 'Remember! The Flag of Liberty! - Support It!', continuing on the bottom: 'Buy U.S. Government War Bonds - 3rd Liberty Loan'. The poster is marked as '6-A' at the bottom left, and still has an original sticker depicting the image of the United States and the Statue of Liberty. This poster has been mounted to a cardboard backing for preservation purposes. Creased throughout with chipping at the edges, yet still a fine example of American patriotism.

Lot 174
