*Gerald Spencer Pryse (1882-1956) watercolour - Street in Kano, 54cm x 77cm, titled verso, unframed. Provenance: From the artist’s studio. An exhibition article recounts the history of this group of watercolour sketches - ‘In 1928 he visited Nigeria and the Gold Coast on behalf of the Empire Marketing Board: the paintings made by him in the Gold Coast were purchased by the Colonial Government. In Nigeria he made no less than a hundred sketches, in colour, in a period of only 53 working days; most of the four months spent in Nigeria being occupied in travel, often under severe conditions. These pictures constitute a unique record of scenery and life in Nigeria at that time. Captain Spencer Pryse also paid an important visit to the Emir Abd'el Karim during the Riff War in North Africa, an account of which he published in Blackwood's Magazine.’. Gerald Spencer Pryse was born in Ashton and educated at Eton. He was largely self taught but with spells under artists in London and Paris. He won first prize at the Venice International Exhibition in 1907. Early in his career he contributed work to The Strand Magazine, The Graphic and Punch, he produced illustrations for E Nesbit, Henry Fielding and others. A staunch socialist and an active member of the Fabian society, his work was often politically charged and with humanist themes, demonstrated in posters for various humanitarian relief agencies throughout the first world war and it’s aftermath. Pryce initially focussed on print-making and was well versed in the techniques of lithography by the outbreak of The Great War. He captured scenes from the battlefields from 1914 and ultimately became the most prolific lithographic artist of World War I. Working initially under the patronage of the Queen of Belgian as a dispatch rider on the Belgian front, he had the freedom to record his observations directly onto huge lithographic stones, which he carried around the Western front line in his Mercedes, commentators at the time described him as ‘’looking like he’d looted a graveyard’”. He later wrote a memoir of this time ‘Four Days: an account of a journey in France made between 28 and 31 August 1914’ published by John Lane in 1932. Pryse also worked with the Indian Army in France and several of his lithographs depict scenes of Indian troops. He subsequently served as a Captain in the Queen Victoria’s rifles, won the Military Cross at Passchendaele, was awarded the Croix de Guerre and was mentioned in dispatches. Pryse was torn between his obligation as a soldier and his potential value as an artist in the propaganda unit. His repeated petitions to become an official war artist were protracted due to his military success and the reluctance of his superiors to release him, his socialist leanings were also a significant stumbling block. In 1917 He finally became an official war artist, one of just 26 British artists to have been awarded the honour during WWI. When his sketches were later exhibited in London they were said to have ‘a freshness and authenticity that were not always apparent in the work of official war artists’, unfortunately much of his work was destroyed during the 1918 German Offensive, and even more destroyed when the Spencer Pryse house was bombed in World War II, after which time Gerald Spencer Pryse ceased to paint. Pryse secured prestigious commissions during the war period, including poster designs for military recruitment, the British Red Cross, London Underground and The Labour Party. In 1924 he did a large series of work for the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley, working alongside Frank Brangwyn to produce the official accompanying publication and also on a monumental series of posters covered ‘the whole of the Empire in 24 pictures’, designed to convey the extent and marvels of the British Empire. He also produced images for the 1928 and 1932 Olympics. In 1925 he travelled and worked extensively in Morocco where his brother was based. In 1928 he toured West Africa by car and river steamer to record scenes on the Gold Coast and Nigeria for The Empire Marketing Board and in 1930 was commissioned for further works by the Gold Coast Government. Throughout his career he exhibited widely including at the Alpine Gallery, Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Gallery, Leicester Galleries and the Royal Glasgow Institute of Art. His work was acquired by and is held by The British Museum, The Victoria and Albert Museum, The Louvre, The Uffizi, The National Portrait Gallery, The Royal Collection and others. Gerald Spencer Pryse died at Cranford House, Stourton, Worcestershire on 28 November 1956 aged 74.

Whistler (Rex). Flying Visit of Truth to Berlin in the form of an R. A. F. leaflet raid here fancifully depicted - but not forgetting a great many hard facts, The Illustrated Magazine, December 9th, 1939, black and white satirical map of an aerial view of Berlin, with descriptive text "What the R. A. F. sees over Berlin" on the verso, 325 x 485 mmQTY: (1)NOTE:The map commemorates the first British "nickel" (propaganda leaflet raid) over Berlin during World war II. It took place in early October 1939 and was carried out by planes of RAF10 Squadron. The raid was promoted as a sign of Germany's weak air defences and its vulnerability to attack. The R. A. F. is represented by numerous putti wearing flying helmets and goggles and being led by a warlike Britannia. In the lower right corner are caricatures of Hitler, Goebbels and Goering, shaking impotent fists at the sky whilst Von Ribbentrop cowers beneath a table. They support a 'skull and crossbones' flag with the skull wearing an SS cap. Rex Whistler joined the army in 1939 but was killed in action in 1944 in Normandy at the age of 39.

Roman Imperial Coinage, Carausius, Denarius, London, 286, imp caravsivs pf avg, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, rev. renovat romano, she-wolf right suckling Romulus and Remus, rsr in exergue, 3.73g (RIC V.5 117 [V 571]; Shiel 68ff; RSC 82). A few light marks and hairline striking split at 6 o’clock, otherwise good very fine, struck from dies of accomplished classical style; very rare thus £4,000-£5,000 --- Provenance: found near Cheriton (Hampshire) in 2023 (PAS HAMP-AD1661) The legend RSR seen on the reverse of this coin has been recognised by Guy de la BeÌdoyeÌ€re as the initials of an extract from Virgil’s Eclogues, Redeunt Saturnia Regna (the Kingdom of Saturn returns). Similar extracts from Virgil are seen elsewhere on Carausius’ coinage, and as Graham Barker has argued, this formed part of a wider policy of imperial propaganda that through coin legends and iconography cast Carausius as a true successor August and displayed the usurper’s rule as the catalyst for another golden age. The weights of Carausian Denarii have been subject to similar analysis. Estiot argued that Carausius struck his Denarii at an ideal weight of 3.90g, or 84 to the Roman pound, on the long since abandoned Augustan standard. This theory aligns well with the imagery deployed here which recalls the mythical founding of Rome.

MUSSOLINI BENITO: (1883-1945) Italian Fascist Dictator of World War II. A good T.L.S., Mussolini, in his capacity as President of the Supreme Defence Commission, three pages, 4to, Rome, 14th August 1927, addressed to the representatives of the Ministries of the Interior, Finance, War, Navy, Air Force, Public Works, and Communications, in Italian, marked Strictly Confidential. Mussolini states that the Defence Commission has examined the issue of territorial anti-aircraft defence, in particular relating to the preparation of ground vehicles, and has decided that arrangements of a protective nature, including masks, alarms, shelters, anti-gas and anti-fire defences etc., should be entrusted to the civil authorities, although under the direction and supervision of the military authorities. Mussolini continues to add that it is appropriate that the matter should now be studied and defined, with plans for preparation and organisation, so that any action 'can come into operation, at the time of need, with the immediacy that is required by the particular form of air strikes', and that a programme of propaganda should be started in order to inform the country of the need for defence, as well as discipline and order, and finally recommending that a special commission should be set up with representatives from each of the ministries, as well as the director of the Military Chemical centre for matters relating to poisonous gases, a representative of the Ministry of Education in order for propaganda to be carried out through schools and a representative of the Italian Red Cross. Some very light, extremely minimal age wear, VG

QUEEN MARGOT - MARGARET OF VALOIS: (1553-1615) Popularly known as "La Reine Margot". French Princess of the Valois dynasty. Queen of Navarre 1572-1599 as spouse of King Henry III of Navarre, and later Queen of France 1589-99 at her husband´s accession to the French throne as Henry IV. Margaret was the daughter of King Henry II of France and Catherine de´ Medici, and the sister of Kings Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III. Extremely rare A.L.S., `Marguerite´, two pages, folio, n.p., n.d., to Henry, in old French. Margaret of Valois writes in her hand twelve lines of text at the base of a letter, stating `Faites que Mr Rigaut me [fasse][trouver]… et faites que ie vous trouve plus veritable en Celle que ne l´avez été au bois de lezoux et… s´en donner ce que j´en… et vous assure que je suis touiours… Vre bonne… Marguerite´ (Translation: "Make sure that Mr. Rigaut find for me… and let me find you more true on the one the you have not been in the Bois de Lezoux… give him what I do… and assure you that I am always… Your good… I believe in my affairs promises me that God will finally do the rest as happily. I have a lot of obligations to Monsieur d'Here de la Bonnerusher, he has everything he needs for his trip and that he remains happy with you and write to me often about everything that will happen there. You write to me only with my… of our business, that I hope God grant… so you don't tell me anything about your marriage and I think that my business makes you forget yours. I would be glad if he succeeds. Monsieur Richaud writes to me that he will not be able to… money from the woods of Lezoux. That's not what you told me, take care that you are truer to the other hopes you gave me. I am infinitely delighted with the good understanding that exists between Mr. Richaud and Mr. Savaron, always maintain it so that my business will go better. I am writing to Monsieur de Savaron. Give him my letters. I thank him for the goodwill he has shown to me and tell him how pleased I am with the good understanding he wanted to have for my business with Monsieur Richaud and ask him to make those of Clermont understand how much he would make me appear willing to no longer allow my nephew's people to live in Clermont, who no longer have a pretext to live there at this time that I have taken possession of it…") To the verso, a hand written short paragraph refers to Charmont and to the deliberations of the Council of State, also referring to a cause of a problem, to wisdom and behaviour. The Queen's text is scattered with small holes as a result of the iron gall ink having reacted with the paper over time, although most words remain legible and the signature is only very slightly affected. Some light overall foxing and a few minor, small tears to the edges, GMargaret of Valois refers to Monsieur Savaron, most probably Jean Savaron (1566-1622) French Historian and Magistrate of the city of Clermont. The letter refers to the city of Clermont and to the one of Lezoux.Margaret of Valois was a woman of letters, an enlightened mind and a generous patron. She was one of the most fashionable women of her time and influenced many other European Royal courts. During her imprisonment she wrote her memoirs, the first woman to have done so.Margaret´s union with the King of Navarre which had been intended to contribute to the reconciliation of Roman Catholics and the Huguenots in France, was tarnished six days after the marriage ceremony by the St. Bartholomew´s Day massacre.Margaret´s infertility and the political tensions led to the end of her marriage. She consented a Royal divorce in 1599 and lived in exile.Alexandre Dumas père wrote his well-known historical novel La Reine Margot in 1845. Although the novel is based on real characters and events, certain aspects of La Reine Margot may be inconsistent with the historical record; historians have attributed that to artistic licence and to the fact that Dumas might have been influenced by propaganda against certain historical figures.
