Mixed media mounted on card, monogrammed NH Depicting a snowy hillside of graves 63.5 x 51cm Note: We can find no record of this design being printed. Probably, its message was considered too bleak to be considered motivational, however absenteeism amongst factory workers who did not feel their work to be crucial to the war effort was a problem. EMPIRE, SILVER DENARIUS OF ELAGABALUS, Divus Caracalla, Rome, ca. 218-219 AD, 3.356g, 6h. RIC 717. Hirmer 427 (this coin). Very rare. Lightly toned. Perfectly centered and struck. Possibly the finest known. Good extremely fine. Privately acquired from Tradart; Tkalec 1989 lot 340; former Giuseppe Mazzini (1883-1961) collection; former Valentine John Eustace Ryan (1882-1947) collection, Glendinings 1952 lot 2234 One would have thought that the old proverb, De mortuis nil nisi bonum (Of the dead, nothing unless good), would have resulted in a lot of quiet people where Caracalla was concerned, yet this was not the case. Julia Maesa orchestrated a brilliant propaganda campaign to overthrow Macrinus and replace him with her grandson and great-nephew of Septimius Severus, the future Elagabalus. Once he was securely on the throne, the need to emphasize his relationship with Caracalla resulted in a very small Divus issue, now very rare. The "Magno" in the obverse legend comes from the identification of Caracalla with Alexander the Great, then current among some of his supporters. Starting Price: €2000
