It also marks a critical decade in Carrington's career when her art increasingly took on a socio-political message, demonstrating a firm allegiance to her adopted homeland, Mexico, where she had lived since 1943. The title is deceptively simple and its caption, written on the work in Spanish, reveals more: 'no olvides Tlatelolco.. les tres culturas,,, no tenernos tumba... campo military número 1' (Don't forget Tlatelolco... the three cultures...we don't fear the grave... military camp number 1).' These words make clear that Carrington's painting pays homage to the student movement or Movimiento Estudiantil, led by the students and staff of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM), which began on July 22, 1968. She commemorates those killed and injured in the massacre in Plaza de las Tres Culturas (Plaza of the Three Cultures) in Mexico City on Wednesday October 2, 1968, and those rounded up, detained and tortured in Military Camp One. On October 2, 1968, ten thousand students gathered in the Plaza in Tlatelolco to begin a peaceful protest march through the city only to find themselves surrounded by Federal troops, many in tanks, who opened fire as night fell. They were protesting against the nation's one party government under Gustavo Díaz Ordaz and the lack of political freedom; he in turn was determined to quash months of student protests, especially in the lead up to the opening of the Olympic Games, scheduled for 12 October. Some 200-400 protestors, innocent bystanders, children (the precise number has never been firmly established) were killed, an estimated two thousand students rounded up, imprisoned, beaten and tortured. In her book documenting this massacre, Elena Poniatowska writes of October 2, 1968: 'There are many. They come down Melchor Ocampo, the Reforma, Juárez, Cinco de Mayo, laughing, students walking arm in arm in the demonstration [...] carefree boys and girls who do not know that tomorrow and the day after, their dead bodies will be lying swollen in the rain.'1Carrington's own sons, Gabriel and Pablo, were involved in the student protests and had been printing anti-government propaganda leaflets and posters on the mimeograph belonging to their father, the Hungarian photographer Emerico 'Chiki' Weisz (1911-2007), in their family home. Carrington asked Gabriel to introduce her to his student circle in the aftermath of the massacre and together they planned a silent protest by marching through the city centre, all dressed in black. However, soon she and her family were in danger of arrest too: one morning they received a phone call warning them that the writer Elena Garro had denounced Carrington and Gabriel to the police; they quickly arranged to leave the country, flying to New Orleans, where they stayed until Chiki advised them it was safe to return.2In addition to commemorating the student protestors, Carrington's painting pays homage to those who supported and saved some of the wounded students, notably Dr Fernando Ortiz Monasterio (1923-2012), to whom the painting is dedicated. Monasterio's 'operation' was radically different to Díaz Ordaz's oppressive regime, of course. He is presented as a medical and humanitarian shaman. He dominates the composition in his tall slender form as the healer at a time of military terror, or an intermediary between a violent moment in history and a better future. Fernando Ortiz Monasterio was a surgeon and teacher who specialized in cranio-facial surgery, assisting many children born with facial abnormalities or suffering tumours. He worked for the Ministry of Health in Mexico and was affiliated with the Graduate Division of UNAM as well as the Hospital General Gea Gonzalez, in the Tlalpan district. Monasterio was known for his interest in music, literature, anthropology and sociology, and for his determination to understanding how and why so many Mexican children were born with cranial deformations.3Carrington's choice of medium for this work also pays homage to the humanism and skill of the doctor. She uses egg tempera, a technique which involves an emulsion of pigment and a water soluble binder – here the binder is egg yolk. Whilst a difficult process, prone to dry flaking, tempera had great symbolic significance in bringing art and science, the feminine (symbolised by the egg) and the masculine (the technical skill), together. Tempera and temperament share a common Latin root - temperare, to mix - and both involve the binding of things whether humors and tempers or pigments. In being associated with the feminine, her choice of tempera technique also serves as a striking counterpoint to the mechanical violence of the massacre. Tempera speaks to an old, life-giving process through the alchemical symbolism of the egg and by extension may be read as a means to challenge an emphatically modern, masculinist, political regime. Tempera was a popular medium in Surrealist circles, especially for women painters, and once Carrington moved to Mexico in 1943 it became a staple technique in her studio there. One friend described her studio as a 'narrow little room in old Mexico, the most dream-saturated place I know here'.4Carrington's recourse to diverse cultural symbols ensures the viewer is intrigued by her use of dramatic colour and detail alike and searches out the stories behind them. We find English and Spanish text in the foreground, some of it in mirror writing; a palette dominated by bands of white and black - the doctor and his assistant are in white which symbolises light, and the androgynous patient they assist is dressed in a black cloak, the colo... Hamilton (Alexander) Madison (James) and John Jay. The Federalist; a Collection of Essays written in favour of the new Constitution, as agreed upon by the Federal Convention, September 17, 1787, 2 vol., first edition, printed on thick paper, vol.1 with two small old ink smudges on title, 36 blank leaves added after the text at the end, title and first leaf washed with slight fading to later ink ownership stamp of W. B. Crosby, next leaf slightly soiled, vol.2 title also with ink ownership stamp of W.B. Crosby also slightly faded, front endpapers with ink signature of William Bedlow, that in vol.2 dated 1787 and in vol.1 1788, other ownership inscriptions by later family members, contents leaves of both vol. with identification of author (name or initials) in ink, presumably in William Bedlow's hand, armorial bookplate of William Bedlow, contemporary tree calf with gilt-stamped Greek key design borders, flat spines fully gilt with contrasting green and red labels, each volume showing minor signs of restoration, especially to joints and spine ends, bumping and wear to corners, but overall near fine copies now preserved in a double-backed quarter calf drop-back box, gilt extra, by Trevor Lloyd, [Sabin 23979; Howes H114; PMM 234; Church 1230; Grolier, American 100, 19], 8vo (165 x 93mm.), New York, Printed and sold by J. and A. McLean, 1788.⁂ An excellent copy with superb provenance of one of the most important works of Americana. The Bedlow-Crosby-Rutgers-Vanneck copy with family ownership dating back to the year of publication. The Federalist Papers is a collection of 85 articles and essays written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay under the collective pseudonym 'Publius' to promote the ratification of the United States Constitution. Originally published in various New York state newspapers including The Independent Journal, New York Packet and the Daily Advertiser between October 27, 1787, and August 1788, they were finally published in book form in 1788, though the dated inscription in volume one would suggest that this volume at least appeared at the very end of 1787."When Alexander Hamilton invited his fellow New Yorker John Jay and James Madison, a Virginian, to join him in writing the series of essays published as The Federalist, it was to meet the immediate need of convincing the reluctant New York State electorate of the necessity of ratifying the newly proposed Constitution of the United States. The 85 essays, under the pseudonym 'Publius,' were designed as political propaganda, not as a treatise of political philosophy. In spite of this, The Federalist survives as one of the new nation's most important contributions to the theory of government" (PMM, 234). The Federalist "exerted a powerful influence in procuring the adoption of the Federal Constitution, not only in New York but in the other states. There is probably no work in so small a compass that contains so much valuable political information. The true principles of a republican form of government are here unfolded with great clearness and simplicity" (Church 1230). "A generation passed before it was recognized that these essays by the principal author of the Constitution and its brilliant advocate were the most authoritative interpretation of the Constitution as drafted by the Convention of 1787. As a commentary and exposition of the Constitution, the influence of the Federalist has been profound" (Grolier American 100, 56)."Provenance: William Bedlow, (1722-1798), with his armorial bookplate on front pastedown in each volume and with his ownership signature dated 1788 in vol.I and dated 1787 [sic] in vol.II. He married Catharine Rutgers who was the mother of Catharine Bedlow who was the niece and heir of Colonel Henry Rutgers.William Bedlow Crosby (1786-1865) with his signature on the flyleaf of each volume and the signature "W.B. Crosby" on each title.Thereafter by marriage and descent to the present owners. This copy of The Federalist evidently remained in the ownership of William Bedlow and a succession of prominent and related New York families, during the whole of the 19th and 20th centuries, during which time there is no evidence that it was ever actually offered for sale. The original 18th century owner of this copy was William Bedlow (1722-1798), a New York resident who had been a sea captain and merchant, and who during the latter part of his life had evidently been engaged in public duties connected with the American war effort. He was chosen, on June 8, 1775, to be a member of the Committee of Secrecy and Inspection, whose duty it was to supervise the enforcement of the decrees of the Provincial Congress. An example of the work of the Committee is illustrated in Appendix A, being a report on the violation of the import rules being flouted by a ship landing illegal goods from Greenock in Scotland. The letter is dated New York, July 5, 1775. Bedlow was thus committed to the revolutionary cause from the outset. He was also on a committee of 48 tasked with conducting the election of officers for the military companies organised in New York [City]. In that same year (1775) Bedlow was appointed a "Commissioner for the Erection of Fortifications in the Highlands on the Hudson River" from 1775-1777, a theatre of war of the utmost importance for the defence of New York itself. A Dutch engineer, Bernard Romans, was appointed to supervise construction work, but this soon resulted in a complete breakdown between Romans and the three Commissioners (including Bedlow). Very little of military use was achieved and eventually Romans was dismissed in February 1776 [see Journal of the New York Provincial Congress, passim, and the Journal of the American Revolution, passim].William Bedlow appears again in the historical records in the shape of a letter dated September 5, 1780, written by Bedlow from Clinton House to Richard Varick (1753-1831), the noted Revolutionary soldier who in 1780 had been deputy commissary-general of musters and, in 1780 aide to General Benedict Arnold at West Point. Bedlow asks for help to secure forage for his three horses, the forage master having died in post. [See George Washington Papers, Series 4, General Correspondence]. It is worth noting that Bedlow adds an interesting footnote to his letter in which he gives the news that "Mrs Bedlow and Mrs Rutgers" have gone on a journey together and that "Miss Rutgers & Miss Bedlow present their best respects to you".Bedlow's final public appointment seems to have been as Post-Master of New York City. Although the precise date of his appointment seems to be unknown, he submitted financial accounts for the Post Office from April 5, 1784 through October 1789.There is another extant letter to George Washington from William Bedlow, dated 27 September 1789, in which Bedlow clearly and bitterly complains about his unfair sacking from his role as Post Master of New York by Samuel Osgood (1747-1813), the …

* WWII. Propaganda headscarf 'Into Battle', London: Jacqmar, 1940s, screen printed rayon scarf with large star design of regimental badges on a blue ground, e.g. The Royal Hussars, The Lancashire Fusiliers, 25th Dragoons, etc., bordered with repeated slogan 'Into Battle' printed in black, and maker's name 'Jacqmar' to each edge, rolled hem, some fox spots, mainly to one edge, very small stain to one corner, 94 x 84cm (37 x 33ins), together with: Propaganda headscarf 'We Shall Never Surrender', London: Jacqmar, 1940s, screen printed silk acetate scarf, with portrait of Winston Churchill in centre, surrounded by slogans e.g. 'We shall fight in the fields and street', 'Never ... was so much owed by so many to so few', etc., and various images, e.g. Houses of Parliament, machine guns, aircraft, etc., some fraying and edge-holes, 89 x 84cm (35 x 33ins)Qty: (2)NOTESDuring the Second World War Jacqmar's of Mayfair produced a number of different scarf designs with themes reflecting the state of the country at war; these are now all highly collectable, and examples are held by the Imperial War Museum and the V&A. Such scarves were morale boosters, and made for the export as well as home market. They were often bought as gifts for sweethearts, and a scarf could transform an outfit or add some glamour at a much lower cost than say a new dress, although Jacqmar was an upmarket label. Their most sought after and famous scarves of the war years were designed by Arnold Lever, and he continued his work for the company even after being called up and joining the RAF. After the war he established his own design studio, where he did work for Liberty, amongst others.

Though the work was originally set in a small American town, Steinbeck revised the work, setting it instead in an unnamed Scandinavian town, and published it with Viking in 1942.  The dramatic rights were acquired by Herman Shumlin, and The Moon is Down premiered on Broadway in April 1942. For condition inquiries please contact Gretchen Hause at gretchenhause@hindmanauctions.com

Victory House (Publishers). Cartoon map of North Africa, Tehran, 1943, colour photolithographic map showing the allied forces trapping a defeated Hitler and Mussolini on Tunisia, printed in Farsi, slight marginal creasing, occasional repaired marginal closed tears, backed with archival tissue, 385 x 580 mm, together with North Africa. Propaganda map, 1943, colour photolithographic map showing the allied advances since El Alamein and the recent Sicily landings, old folds, two repaired marginal holes, backed with archival tissue, 420 x 645 mmQty: (2)NOTESRare survivors from World War II, these two Middle Eastern propaganda maps were part of a campaign conducted by the British from central Tehran in the wake of the Anglo-Russian invasion of Iran on 25th August 1941. It is interesting to note that despite the Anglo-Russian invasion, Iran would remain neutral for the ensuing two years, only declaring war on Germany in September 1943; therefore the battle for Iranian 'hearts and minds' remained crucial to the Allied cause throughout this period. Not long after these posters were published, Tehran would become the meeting place for the Allied leader, Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin, where the trio discussed arrangements for the European Second Front and for the proposed post-war independence of Iran. In a country where literacy levels were so low (about 10 - 15% of the populace), yet which had a sophisticated and vibrant culture of story-telling, these pictorial propaganda posters demonstrate how this was harnessed by the British New Centre in Tehran's Victory House during the wartime period.

Whistler (Rex). Flying Visit of Truth to Berlin in the form of an R. A. F. leaflet raid here fancifully depicted - but not forgetting a great many hard facts, The Illustrated Magazine, December 9th, 1939, black and white satirical map of an aerial view of Berlin, very slight staining, margins strengthened on verso with tape, with descriptive text "What the R. A. F. sees over Berlin" on the verso, 325 x 485 mmQty: (1)NOTESThe map commemorates the first British "nickel" (propaganda leaflet raid) over Berlin during World war II. It took place in early October 1939 and was carried out by planes of RAF10 Squadron. The raid was promoted as a sign of Germany's weak air defences and its vulnerability to attack. The R. A. F. is represented by numerous putti wearing flying helmets and goggles and being led by a warlike Britannia. In the lower right corner are caricatures of Hitler, Goebbels and Goering, shaking impotent fists at the sky whilst Von Ribbentrop cowers beneath a table. They support a 'skull and crossbones' flag with the skull wearing an SS cap. Rex Whistler joined the army in 1939 but was killed in action in 1944 in Normandy at the age of 39.

* Russo-Japanese War. V Osadnom Polozhenii [Under Siege]. Lit. Tov I. D. Sytin v Moskva [Lithographic partnership J. I. D. Sytin, Moscow], 1904, chromolithographic 'lubok' propaganda broadsheet, 'rayeshnik-style' verse below image, 575 x 390 mmQty: (1)NOTESA satirical propaganda broadsheet produced with a jingoistic Russian perspective of the Russo-Japanese war. It shows a giant obese John Bull sitting on a large bag of money, but he is bound up and tied down - almost like Gulliver - whilst Lilliputian Japanese soldiers swarm up his torso and extract a large wallet from his inside jacket pocket. The implication is that Britain's support for Japan - which came in the form of a substantial loan - is subject to so many caveats and conditions (the scroll in the foreground labelled "Uslovie", translates as conditions) as to be more of a hindrance than a help. The Japanese armed forces are depicted as little more than miniature toys and in the distance, 'Uncle Sam' (also with an outstanding loan bill peeping out from his coat-tails) turns his back on the whole affair and appears to be ignoring a Japanese general who stands before him. A scarce and early piece of Russian propaganda which attempts to imply that Japan would be unable to wage war against Russia without the financial help of its 'Western friends' in the form of Uncle Sam and John Bull.

* Summers (Robert, after). The Doings of Drink, or the Publican versus the People, after the original oil by Mr. Robert Summers of Darlington. Dedicated to Sir Wilfred Lawson Bart, M.P. and to all the Friends of Temperance, Grumby & Clarke, Hull, 1894, chromolithograph, slight damp staining and spotting, trimmed to the image on three margins, 465 x 735 mm, framedQty: (1)NOTESA naive propaganda piece showing the evils of drink on the general populace. The foreground is full of men and women in rags; the implication being that they have been made destitute by drink. People beg, fight, are arrested, beat their wives, drop their babies in the gutter, hang themselves in cellars and pawn their belongings.
