Lot 404

Original vintage propaganda poster issued during the Second World War in the Slovak Republic - To su skutku Cechobolsevismu! Preto do zbrane! - Take up the weapons!! Image shows a Slovak soldier with a rifle pointing to war atrocities in the East front. Goebbels instructed Nazi propagandists to describe the invasion of the Soviet Union (Operation Barbarossa) as the “European crusade against Bolshevism” and the Nazis then formed different units of the Waffen-SS consisting of mainly volunteers and conscripts. After Stalingrad, the main theme changed to Germany as the sole defender of what they called "Western European culture" against the "Bolshevist hordes". The (First) Slovak Republic - Slovenska republika - otherwise known as the Slovak State, was a partially-recognized client state of Nazi Germany which existed between 14 March 1939 and 4 April 1945. The Slovak part of Czechoslovakia declared independence with German support one day before the German occupation of Bohemia and Moravia. The Slovak Republic controlled the majority of the territory of present-day Slovakia but without its current southern and eastern parts, which were ceded to Hungary in 1938 and 1939. It was the first time in history that Slovakia had been a formally independent state. A one-party state governed by the far-right Hlinka's Slovak People's Party, the Slovak Republic is primarily known for its collaboration with Nazi Germany, which included sending troops to the invasion of Poland in September 1939 and the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. In 1942, the country deported 58,000 Jews (two-thirds of the Slovak Jewish population) to German-occupied Poland, paying Germany 500 Reichsmarks each. After an increase in the activity of anti-Nazi Slovak partisans, Germany invaded Slovakia, triggering a major uprising. The Slovak Republic was abolished after the Soviet occupation in 1945 and its territory was reintegrated into the recreated Third Czechoslovak Republic. Good condition, foxing, paper losses, creasing, folds, pinholes. Country of issue: Slovakia, designer: Unknown, size (cm): 95x63, year of printing: 1940s

Set of 5 World War II propaganda posters depicting adaptations of Shahnameh scenes, in Farsi, apparent reprinted edition of the complete 6 scenes, chromolithographs on paper [London (for the Ministry of Information), 1942 or slightly later] 6 leaves (forming the complete set, a few light creases and chips to outer extremities, some scattered spotting and light surface dust, fair condition, versos blank, each 370 by 250 mm.Marengo was an Egyptian, who worked in Paris as a satirical cartoonist. At the outbreak of World War II, he was studying in Exeter College, Oxford, and turned his talents to aiding the Ministry of Information in London, producing over 3000 images on behalf of the British war effort. The Germans were increasingly using propaganda in Iran, and so Marengo was tasked with devising counter-measures. He was born in Qazvin, spent some time in Tabriz, travelled to the Ottoman lands as far as the Hijaz, visited Baghdad, Damascus and Aleppo and on his return settled in Isfahan, where he entered the court of Shah 'Abbas I. It is recorded that his fame and the Shah's particular fondness for Mir 'Imad, caused jealousy among other calligraphers and resulted in the rumour that he was a Sunni and his murder by the order of the Shah in AH 1024?AD 1615. Karimzadeh, in his book on Mir 'Imad, questions the above account and concludes that the widespread rumour of him being murdered by the order of the Shah was Ottoman propaganda against the Shia rulers of Persia.
