PALESTINE - MARTIAL LAW IN JERUSALEM Rare poster proclamation from General Allenby addressed 'To the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Blessed' establishing martial law in the City, text printed in English, Judeo-Arabic, and French, with border printed in red, 733 x 485mm., [c.1917] Footnotes: RARE PROPAGANDA POSTER IMPOSING MARTIAL LAW IN JERUSALEM issued by General Allenby, Commander-in-Chief of the British Forces in Palestine, following 'The defeat inflicted upon the Turks by the troops under my command'. He notes that 'Guards have been placed at Bethlehem and at Rachel's tomb. The tomb at Hebron has been placed under exclusive Moslem control...', but insists that 'it is my desire that every person should pursue his business without fear of interruption', contrasting this with the behaviour of the previous Ottoman regime. That one of the languages used is Judeo-Arabic suggest that the target audience for the poster includes the old yishuv, Sephardi Jews and others of the Ottoman Empire. Alongside the proclamation is a copy of one issued by the Germans after their occupation of the city of Holnon, France, in 1915, to emphasize the positive differences between the policies the British in Palestine to those of the Germans.
