Agitation against the Corn Laws, which imposed duties on imported foodstuffs to protect British producers peaked c.1838 resulting in the creation of a Manchester Anti-Corn League, its function was solely as a propaganda organ, publishing attacks on the Corn Laws and sending out agents to preach free trade, and mobilize moral and even religious arguments against the Corn Laws, which allegedly increased the price of the 'poor man's bread. The league's doctrine quickly entered party politics and in 1846 The Corn Laws were abolished by Peel, the newly elected Prime Minister, who decided that all obstructions to import the import of food must go, particularly in view of the recent Irish famine which threatened widespread starvation.

[LENIN VLADIMIR ILICH]: Printed pamphlet, sixteen pages, small 8vo, first edition, published in 1899 in Geneva by Lenin, in Cyrillic. The protest document being an edition of the Union of Russian Social-democrats with epilogue by the editor of the magazine Rabochee Delo (The Workers´Cause), which states in part `Seventeen Russian social democrats have unanimously adopted and printed a resolution so that other comrades could read it. The reason for it is that recently Russian social democrats have demonstrated deviation from their principles established by founders and members of the movement since 1890. The "Credo", which should show main points of view of some new Russian social democrats, is an attempt to expose "new criteria" systematically....Industrialization has influenced the history of Social democracy.... The revolutionary movement started in the West with the words "liberté, fraternité, egalité"... Further reporting in part `We have to keep close to the plan set which means creating an independent workers political party, inseparable from the proletariat class struggle which will lead us to the conquest of political freedom.....The belief that the class struggle has to include mandatorily the political and economic struggle as proved in the international social-democracy....The proletariat must aspire to create independent workers, political parties and the target has to be the conquest of the political power to create a socialist society.....´ The manisfesto establishes some principles `The motto has to be helping the workers in their economic and political struggle; agitation as a consequence of the economic necessities and political oppression; and the propaganda of the scientific socialism and the democratic ideas....The social-democracy has to concentrate all the strength in organizing the political party, consolidating the discipline and developing conspiracy techniques.´ A very interesting early document. With some overall age wear, few stains, last page repaired, and few detached. G. £400-500

Septimius Severus, with Caracalla and Geta, AV Aureus. Rome, AD 209. SEVERVS PIVS AVG, laureate head right / CONCORDIA AVGVSTORVM, Caracalla and Geta, both laureate and togate, standing facing one another, supporting between them a globe surmounted by Victory standing left, holding wreath in right hand and palm frond in left. RIC IV 255; Calicó 2435a; Biaggi 1064; BMCRE 312. 7.30g, 21mm, 12h. Near Mint State. Very Rare. This reverse type neatly shows the hope Severus held for unity and amity between his two sons, and his wish for them to rule together following his death and thus continue the dynasty he had founded. Imperial propaganda presented the image of a happy family that shared the responsibilities of rule: Severus' wife Julia Domna was his trusted counsellor, his older son Caracalla his second in command, and his younger son, appointed Augustus in 209, was entrusted with administrative and bureaucratic duties. Yet the brothers' disdain for one another is well-attested; Dio Cassius relates that 'the two pretended to love and commend each other, but in all that they did they were diametrically opposed, and anyone could see that something terrible was bound to result from the situation.' Following Severus' death whilst on campaign in Caledonia in 211, the two brothers returned to Rome from Britannia to their joint rule under the watchful eye of their mother. The brothers argued and fought over every law and every appointment, the situation becoming sufficiently unbearable that by the end of the year during the festival of Saturnalia, Caracalla attempted to have Geta murdered, without success. Later, under the pretext of meeting for a reconciliation, Caracalla had his brother slain in his mother's arms by members of the Praetorian Guard loyal to him. After a tumultuous and bloodthirsty reign of less than six years, Caracalla was assassinated by an officer of his personal bodyguard while relieving himself at a roadside near Carrhae. Although after a brief interlude the line of Septimius' father Bassianus would continue for some time yet in the form of Elagabalus (Caracalla's first cousin, once removed) and later Severus Alexander, Caracalla's death firmly extinguished Septimius' dream for his sons to continue the Severan dynasty he had laboured to establish.

Lot 366

'…I find his books quite unreadable…' DOUGLAS ALFRED: (1870-1945) English Author & Poet, the intimate friend and lover of Oscar Wilde. A remarkable A.L.S., Alfred Douglas, two pages, 4to, Hove, Sussex, 25th June 1943, to [Collin Brooks] the Editor of Truth. Douglas announces 'Is Mr. J. B. Priestley really "one of the outstanding figures of our time"? And has he really "an excellent broadcasting technique & voice"?' and continues 'Personally I find his books quite unreadable, & for that reason I have always avoided witnessing any of his plays; while as for his "broadcasting technique and voice", I consider that he has quite the least attractive voice I have ever heard on the air which, pardic, is saying a good deal after listening, as I did last week, to the voice of Labour in its "conference". As to the matter of his broadcasts it is just crude, blatant, unashamed Left Wing propaganda. No doubt there must be people who like that sort of thing & consider it "outstanding", but one hardly expects such bouquets for Mr. Priestley from Truth.' Douglas further attacks, 'In his latest broadcast Mr. Priestley began by referring to Sunday as "the last day of the week". Is Mr Priestley really so ignorant as not to know that Sunday is the first day of the week (see any dictionary) or is he merely aiming a side kick at the Christian Sunday? In either case your flattering tributes seem to me to be rather outstandingly unnecessary'. A couple of minor paperclip rust stains to the head of each page, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG Collin Brooks (1893-1959) British Journalist, Writer and Broadcaster. Editor of the British periodical publication Truth from 1941-53. J. B. Priestley (1894-1984) English Novelist, Playwright and Broadcaster. During World War II, Priestley was a regular broadcaster on the BBC. The Postscript, broadcast on Sunday nights through 1940 and 1941, drew peak audiences of 16 million; only Winston Churchill was more popular with listeners. The political content of his broadcasts and his hopes of a new and different England after the war influenced the politics of the period and helped the Labour Party gain its landslide victory in the General Election of 1945.

EDWARD VIII: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. A fine, long A.L.S., David, six pages, 4to, Quebec, 23rd - 28th August 1919, to his mistress Freda Dudley Ward (‘My darling darling precious beloved little Fredie Wedie’). Writing over several days in bold pencil, the Prince of Wales commences his letter ‘Again no mail & consequently a greater & more bitter disappointment to your poor little boy who is waiting so anxiously for the next mail which means almost life or death to him nowadays sweetheart!!’ and continues to add that he has had a boring day in which he visited a couple of Roman Catholic convents (‘trying but quite interesting’) and then travelled by train to see a Roman Catholic village church (‘which is famous for something I don’t quite know what…’) and remarking ‘Of course one has to be “all over” these bl--d- French Canadians & their priests, the whole thing is a very intricate & delicate imperial & political question which I don’t attempt to understand tho I do know that they are mostly a rotten priest ridden community who are the completest passengers & who won’t do their bit in anything & of course not during the war!! I just can’t tell you what I think of them all particularly their priests who are the cause of all the trouble tho they have given me a marvellous welcome here in Quebec!!’, further writing of playing golf when ‘more men & hundreds of amateur “snappers”!’ descended upon him and his party, ‘I had another proper dose of “pump handling” (my name for shaking hands darling!)….I’m sure that taking part in games & sport goes down well & is good propaganda as it shows that I can do more than merely driving pompously thro streets of cities & that I enjoy taking part in Canadian pastimes & prefer meeting people informally as friends as much as possible!! Not that I ever want to see many of them again, still it makes a good impression which is what I am always out for!’ The Prince also informs his correspondent of his immediate travel arrangements to Toronto and Ottawa, where he will rejoin the Duke of Devonshire (Governor General of Canada) and his wife (‘the Duchess is….so pompous & interfering; no wonder she’s unpopular on this side….but the Duke is popular & I like him tho he’s got almost as little brains as your little boy…’) and continues his letter the following day whilst on the train to Toronto, explaining that he is relieved to have left the French Canadians (’who really aren’t worth all trouble I’ve taken to be out of the way polite to them as they are shirkers in everything particularly in war as they all voted against conscription & they are strong politically’) and commenting on his train carriage being luxurious and ornate, although uncomfortable. The next day the Prince writes from Toronto, expressing his delight at the reception he has received, although complaining about the number of speeches he has had to make, including an impromptu one at a large dinner after it had been agreed none would be necessary, and also writing of dances he has attended, ‘there’s really nothing to these parties angel, very few of the women are worth dancing with & far less are in any way attractive tho they are mostly cheery’ before adopting a romantic tone, ‘How I do miss you & want you more & more every day sweetheart & I’m going mad for the long delay of the next mail’  OWING TO RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED BY THE-SALEROOM.COM A COMPLETE DESCRIPTION FOR THIS LOT CAN NOT BE DISPLAYED.
