A rare and fascinating collection of personal effects relating to a Private (later Corporal) Robert William Flack No. 5946072 of The Bedfordshire And Hertfordshire Regiment, 2nd Battn. The accompanying documents and photographs tell the story of him first being missing in action, then found to be a prisoner of war in Stalag VIIIb, near Lamsdorf, Germany. Further paperwork related him to working party E419 Opole - mostly working on the railway or mines. The extensive collection of paperwork includes; Flack's 1931 Musketry Scoring Book, his Soldier's Service and Pay Book, swimming certificate, various pre and post war documents / membership books etc (relating to him and his family), his Red Cross Return Home card, Identity Card, a photograph appearing to be sent by his mother addressed to 'British Prisoners Of War, Camp Stalag VIIIB E.419, Germany', various war office correspondence leading up to him being a POW including letters to his wife stating he is missing, his War Medal, his military issue Life Saving booklet, Release Book, an original air-dropped German propaganda leaflet. Along with various photographs sent home by Flack whilst interned in the camp, most with official Stalag VIIIb stamps to verso. One photograph, presumably written on during capture by Flack reads 'I am RW Flack No. 5946012 of the Bedfordshire & Herts Regt - do send this to my wife I hope to see her *some* (obscured) day soon.' A rare and interesting piece of WWII Second World War history.
