Everett (Leslie F., British, early 20th century] "The Heroes", pen and black ink over pencil, blue wash, signed and dated, with inscription underneath, ruled ink border, 360 x 270 mm (14 1/8 x 10 3/4 in), under glass, minor surface dirt, modern Dutch 17th-century style frame, 1914.⁂ Although no biographical information is known about Leslie F. Everett (of Willesden Green, London), he was an accomplished illustrator who worked in the prevailing style of Rackham, Hassall, Dulac, Edmund J Sullivan, Housman and the classic Edwardian periodical artists of the period. This 'propaganda' cartoon possibly alludes, albeit obliquely, to the Ottoman Empire's entry to WW1 through their surprise attack on Russia's Black Sea coast on 29 October 1914, with Russia responding by declaring war on 5 November 1914.

Their main aim was to destroy the clan structure and obliterate any fundamentals of Scottish life such as the Gaelic language, tartan etc. This was further accomplished with the ‘Scottish Society for Propagating Christian Knowledge’, enforcing English and English culture and was the model used across the world in colonisation. Propaganda such as this caricature depicted mainly Highland Scots as primitive and uncouth with financial incentives for those disseminating the material. The sinking of the Royal Oak, came as a shock to the Royal Navy and the British public as it was the first battleship to be sunk in the war and also was docked at the Scapa Flow naval base, which the British authorities believed to be impregnable to German U-Boat attack. Here crew were 1,234 men and boys, of this number 835 were killed on the night of the attack or died of wounds later. Tom McNeely (Canadian, B. 1935) "Jesse Owens" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 25c Jesse Owens stamp issued July 6, 1990. When the Olympics came to Berlin in 1936, the Germans spared no expense, building a massive complex dubbed the Reich Sports Grounds. The Nazis deemed the international event a chance to tout their "Aryan race" ideology, and taunted the United States for using "inferior" black athletes. One such black athlete was track and field star Jesse Owens (1913-1980) who almost single-handedly exposed the hollow core of Nazi propaganda. In an astonishing performance, Owens earned gold medals in four events: the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter sprint, the long jump and the 400-meter relay, setting or tying three Olympic and world records in the process. The youngest of ten children born to Alabama sharecroppers, the Owens family moved to Ohio in the 1920's, and Jesse set numerous junior high and high school track and field records. And though he achieved international fame with his performance in the Olympics, Owens' feats as an Ohio State University athlete were no less impressive. A year before the Olympics, Owens earned a place in history by breaking three world records and tying another in less than an hour at a Big Ten championship in Michigan. Initially after his return from Berlin to the United States his career faltered. But in the 1950's he achieved financial security as a public speaker, becoming what some referred to as a "professional good example" for the American way of life. Image Size: 26.25 x 21.75 in. Overall Size: 27.75 x 21.75 in. Unframed. (B12391)

However, in 1938 the trajectory of the company changed dramatically with the administrative board of the company falling under the rule of the Nuremberg Race Laws, upon which the company underwent "Aryanization". Following this seizure, the board, comprised mostly of the Bachwitz family, was replaced with their publishing rights to several fashion magazines revoked. Later in 1942, a Nazi authority became the owner of Atelier Bachwitz and converted the company into a publicity and propaganda firm. In the same year Rosine Bachwitz, primary caretaker of Atelier Bachwitz, and wife of Arnold Bachwitz, is murdered in the Theresienstadt concentration camp. RAF Scampton. 1940-43. Autograph Album. 19cm wide x 13cm tall. Green cloth. Over 250 signatures. Worthy of research as this will contain scarce signatures. The British Newspaper Archive mentions all of the variety acts listed in this album (details published in the Lincolnshire Echo). A quick look: a. Full of RAF Gang Show inscriptions (probably the best WW2 collection of Gang Show signatures in one album). Includes: i. Squadron Leader William Henry Ralph Reader. Through the pre-war Gang Shows, Reader became friends with Air Commodore Archibald Boyle, the deputy director of RAF Intelligence. The German Ambassador, Joachim von Ribbentrop, attended the 1938 London Gang Show and invited Reader to visit the Hitler Youth Movement in Germany. Boyle persuaded Reader to become an Intelligence Officer in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve with the rank of Flight Lieutenant, although the diplomatic situation had deteriorated before he could take up von Ribbentrop's invitation. On the outbreak of war, Boyle sent Reader to France for undercover work, in the guise of running a concert party, for which some former Gang Show members were recruited into the RAF. The show was entitled Ralph Reader and Ten Blokes from the Gang Show and, besides allowing Reader to complete intelligence tasks, had a positive effect on morale. On returning to England, Reader was ordered to expand the Gang Shows, while his visits to RAF stations allowed Reader to monitor subversive propaganda which was a concern of the RAF high command. Reader eventually raised twenty-four RAF Gang Show units and two female WAAF units with a total establishment of nearly four hundred serving personnel. The RAF Gang Shows toured nearly every theatre of war, from Iceland to Burma. By 1944, Gang Show units were estimated to have travelled 100, 000 miles and entertained 3, 500, 000 servicemen. Some of those who served in the RAF Gang Shows would later become well known entertainers, such as Peter Sellers, Tony Hancock, Dick Emery and Cardew Robinson. For his services to the RAF, he was awarded an MBE (Military Division) in 1943. https://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Ralph_Reader for more detail. ii. Murray Browne, Assistant to Ralph Reader; later Musical Director; later Chairman of the Gang Show committee. Died 1992 aged 84. iii. Douglas (Cardew) Robinson. Joining the RAF in 1939, AC2 Douglas Robinson found himself stationed at Uxbridge, where he quickly found a place in the camp shows. It was in 1941 that Squadron Leader Ralph Reader, arrived at RAF Uxbridge to put on a performance. Robinson seized his chance, did a working audition, and soon found himself posted to RAF Gang Show Unit Number Five. His pre-war experience now came in handy, and he was promoted to Flight-Sergeant and put in charge of the unit. They played at RAF camps all over the country, and when the 'second front' was opened up in Normandy, Unit 5 followed, eventually touring through Belgium and Holland giving concert-party entertainments on the tail-flap of their lorry. A tour of the Far East followed, including a sudden detour when the first atomic bomb was dropped on Japan. https://www. independent. co. uk/news/people/obituary-cardew-robinson-1565861. html for his detailed obituary. b. Theo Gorst Microsoft Employee of the Year, 2021 Gouache on Wood Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Theo Gorst is a self-taught artist living and working in Hastings, originally from Suffolk. Using found wood- from skips and leaning against lamp posts- Gorst reclaims items that have been discarded and incorporates them into his art. His dreamlike paintings reference folk art and surrealism, taking influence from painters such as Ken Kiff, Mark Tennant and Peter Blake. Usually painting from photographs, he reinterprets them with humour to express, through new compositions, everyday absurdities. Theo has done lots of work with musicians, designing album covers and numerous posters for gigs and happenings. He currently sells work privately and takes commissions.   About the Postcard Microsoft Employee of the Year juxtaposes aesthetics of propaganda posters with more meaningless phrases in public consciousness. The man in the painting is taken from a photograph of a Mexican mortician, adding to the surreal humour created by pairing this unrelated imagery. Gouache on Found Wood from a building site in Hastings.

WW1 8th Battalion East Surrey Regiment Killed in Action 1st Day of the Somme Medal Pair, Famous for Dribbling Football’s Towards the German Trenches During the Attack on Montauban on 1st July 1916, the pair consists of British War and Victory medals awarded to “5150 PTE J BUCKLE E SURR R”. Medals remain in good overall condition. Private John Buckle was born in 1893, he was from Rougham, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. He served with the 8th Battalion East Surrey regiment in France from 27th July 1915, he is also entitled to the 1914-15 star. He was killed in action on the 1st July 1916, the first day of the battle of the Somme and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial. The 8th Battalion East Surrey regiment were tasked with attacking Montauban. Whilst on leave in the UK, a Captain W P Nevill purchased two footballs and took them back to the front line with him. On the eve of the attack, he gave the balls out and instructed his men that they would kick the balls across no mans land on the advance to the German trenches, an extract from a letter written at the time gives the following details, “There were two footballs, and on one was painted ‘The Great European Cup – Tie Final East Surreys v Bavarians Kick off at zero’. On the other in large letters was this “NO REFEREE”, which was W’s way of telling them men they needn’t treat the Hun too gently”. The Gallant East Surreys gives the following account, “The captain on one of the companies had provided four footballs, one for each platoon, urging them to keep up dribbling competition all the way over the mile and a quarter of ground they had to traverse. As the company formed on emerging from the trench, the platoon commanders kicked off, and the match against death commenced. The gallant captain himself fell early in the charge, and men began to drop rapidly under the hail of machine-gun bullets. But still the footballs were booted onwards, with hoarse cries of encouragement or defiance, until they disappeared in the dense smother behind which the Germans were shooting. Then, when the bombs and bayonets had done their work, and the enemy had cleared out, the Surrey men looked for their footballs, and recovered two of them in the captured traverses. These will be sent to the Regimental Depot at Kingston as trophies worth preserving”. This act was picked up by the British media at the time and used as a great political propaganda tool to deflect from the severe losses suffered by the British army during the 1st day of the Battle of the Somme, which has gone down in history as one of the worst military disasters in the history of the British army.
