A BRONZE JACOBITE 'BRAVADO' MEDALLION DATED 1749 obverse, a standing figure of a Highlander, the targe with motto within QUIS CONTENDAT MECUM (Who can contend with me) and raised sword, motto NULLUM NON MOVEBO LAPIDEM UT ILLUD ADIPISCAR 1749 (I will leave no stone unmoved to obtain that, 1749), the reverse with open displayed Jacobite rose head, legend around MEA.RES.AGITUR (My affairs are at issue) 31mm across, 16.4g Literature: 'The Medallic Record of the Jacobite Movement', N Woolf, item 61:1a 'British Commemorative Medals, and their values', C Eimer, item 624 Note: Perhaps one of the most commonly encountered Jacobite medallions, it shows the strength and support Charles Edward was gaining. No two symbols can show greater connection and power to the cause than the fighting Highlander in full dress or the Jacobite rose so commonly encountered in all aspects of Jacobite art. The mottos and legends offer little disguise in the support of the Stuarts and are an open display of force towards the Hanoverians. Unlike many medallions which show a gentle or political side to propaganda this is a defiant show of force, giving rise to this medallion being called the Bravado medallion. The maker, although unrecorded, is possibly connected to the Capture of Edinburgh medallion as there are many similarities in the engraving of the Highlander and the lettering to the legends. This connection assumes that this medallion was locally produced in Scotland for distribution around followers and supports still loyal after the failure of the uprising. Mass produced and widely issued, there are two variations of dies used for this medal and it appears to have been produced in silver, bronze and gilded bronze over a number of years as striking and die quality varies.

Original vintage propaganda poster from a collection of posters titled Fight Alcoholism! Great illustration of a man pouring a bag of sugar into a funnel - the funnel turns into a snake which spits poison into glass bottles below. Message reads - Converts sugar to poison. The image is a reference of a moonshine alcohol production. High volumes of alcohol consumption have serious negative effects on Russia's social fabric and bring political, economic and public health ramifications. Alcoholism has been a problem throughout the country's history because drinking is a pervasive, socially acceptable behaviour in Russian society and alcohol has also been a major source of government revenue for centuries. At the beginning of World War I, prohibition was introduced in the Russian Empire, limiting the sale of hard liquor to restaurants. After the Bolshevik Party came to power, they made repeated attempts to reduce consumption in the Soviet Union. However, by 1925, vodka had reappeared in state-run stores. Joseph Stalin reestablished a state monopoly to generate revenue. Soviet leaders Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brezhnev, Yuri Andropov, and Konstantin Chernenko all tried to stem alcoholism. Mikhail Gorbachev increased controls on alcohol in 1985; he attempted to impose a partial prohibition, which involved a massive anti-alcohol campaign, severe penalties against public drunkenness and alcohol consumption, and restrictions on sales of liquor. The campaign was temporarily successful in reducing per capita alcohol consumption and improving quality-of-life measures such as life expectancies and crime rates, but it was deeply unpopular among the population and it ultimately failed. Excellent condition. Country: Russia, year of printing: 1977, designer: Kukryniks, size (cm): 52x40cm

Fantastic design by Dutch artist I. Spreekmeester depicting an American windmill with its blades displaying the flags of the participating countries while the American flag is displayed at the helm of the mill. This design received the 5th Prize in the Intra-European Cooperation for a Better Standard of Living poster competition on the theme of cooperation and economic recovery that was held by NATO in Europe for the Marshall Plan. The Marshall Plan (officially the European Recovery Program, ERP) was an American initiative passed in 1948 to aid Western Europe, in which the United States gave over $12 billion (nearly $100 billion in 2018 US dollars) in economic assistance to help rebuild Western European economies after the end of World War II. Replacing the previous Morgenthau Plan, it operated for four years beginning on April 3, 1948. The goals of the United States were to rebuild war-torn regions, remove trade barriers, modernize industry, improve European prosperity, and prevent the spread of Communism. The Marshall Plan required a reduction of interstate barriers, a dropping of many regulations, and encouraged an increase in productivity, as well as the adoption of modern business procedures. Lot 4802

Original vintage Soviet propaganda poster with the message - The United States - The perpetrators of the breakdown of the negotiations in Geneva! Bold black and orange design with bombs decorating the lettering. The Cold War was a period of geopolitical tension between the Soviet Union with its satellite states (the Eastern Bloc), and the United States with its allies (the Western Bloc) after World War II. A common historiography of the conflict begins between 1946, the year U.S. diplomat George F. Kennan's "Long Telegram" from Moscow cemented a U.S. foreign policy of containment of Soviet expansionism threatening strategically vital regions, and the Truman Doctrine of 1947, and ending between the Revolutions of 1989, which ended communism in Eastern Europe as well as in other areas, and the 1991 collapse of the USSR, when nations of the Soviet Union abolished communism and restored their independence. The term "cold" is used because there was no large-scale fighting directly between the two sides, but they each supported major regional conflicts known as proxy wars. The conflict split the temporary wartime alliance against Nazi Germany and its allies, leaving the USSR and the US as two superpowers with profound economic and political differences. Lot 1315

Original vintage advertising poster for performances of the former Blue Blouse Theatre at the Sovremennyi Teatr in Moscow in 1933. The Blue Blouse (Russian: ????? ?????, Sinyaya Bluza) was an influential agitprop theatre collective in the early Soviet Union. Boris Yuzhanin created the first Blue Blouse troupe under the auspices of the Moscow Institute of Journalism in 1923. Their example encouraged similar workers' theatre companies across the country and worldwide; by 1927 there were more than 5,000 Blue Blouse troupes in the Soviet Union with more than 100,000 members. In the autumn of that year, the original troupe began a tour in Erwin Piscator's theatre in Berlin that provoked a rapid growth of agitprop troupes across Weimar Germany. The blue workers' uniforms, in which the actors performed, gave the troupe its name, under which they also published a magazine, which contained scripts and detailed descriptions of staging, costumes, and the troupe's other theatrical techniques, along with news reports and current affairs. Its variety style made many demands on its performers, requiring "a young deft man trained in physical culture, trained in the striking word, in the cheerful, bold and hard-hitting song and couplet, in the contemporary rhythm of the grotesque and simplistic," its magazine explained. The rehearsal process was extremely rigorous, requiring actors to stay physically and mentally alert through a strict exercise program and by keeping up with the political topics of the day. The year 1927 marked the end of the Blue Blouse organisation, when it was forced to merge with the more orthodox Workers' Youth Theatre (TRAM). Agitprop (portmanteau of "agitation" and "propaganda") is political propaganda, especially the communist propaganda used in Soviet Russia, that is spread to the general public through popular media such as literature, plays, pamphlets, films, and other art forms with an explicitly political message. It gave rise to agitprop theatre, a highly politicized theatre that originated in 1920s Europe and spread to the United States; the plays of Bertolt Brecht are a notable example. Russian agitprop theater was noted for its cardboard characters of perfect virtue and complete evil, and its coarse ridicule. Gradually the term agitprop came to describe any kind of highly politicized art. Good condition, folds, tears, staining, pinholes, writing in pencil. Country: Russia , year of printing: 1933, designer: Unknown, size (cm): 65x60cm

Original vintage propaganda poster published to warn against the risk of pools gambling and betting: A Fool and his money - Mug's Game'. A betting pool, sports lottery, sweep, or office pool if done at work, is a form of gambling, specifically a variant of parimutuel betting influenced by lotteries, where gamblers pay a fixed price into a pool (from which taxes and a house "take" or "vig" are removed), and then make a selection on an outcome, usually related to sport. In an informal game, the vig is usually quite small or non-existent. The pool is evenly divided between those that have made the correct selection. There are no odds involved; each winner's payoff depends simply on the number of gamblers and the number of winners. (True parimutuel betting, which was historically referred to as pool betting, involves both odds calculations and variable wager amounts.) Betting pools are not connected merely to sports, as there are topics such as deaths and births which people can bet on. Death pools usually involve well-known individuals, such as celebrities and sports figures, which the participants predict will die within a certain period of time, with more points being assigned to individuals who are under the age of 80 years or appear to be in generally good health. On the other hand, birth pools involve individuals picking specific dates in which someone, who can be either a celebrity or friend, gives birth. Good condition, small tears and paper losses in margins. Country: UK, year of printing: 1940s, designer: Mays, size (cm): 49x37

Original vintage propaganda poster isssued in the Nazi Germany during the Seconf World War. Kriegsoper! Frontkamerad Adolf Hitler ruft zur Sammlung! - War victims! Front comrade Adolf Hitler calls for donations! Poster issued by National-Sozialistische Kriegsopferversorgung and printed by Raabe, Berlin. The National Socialist War Victim's Care (German: Nationalsozialistische Kriegsopferversorgung, NSKOV) was a social welfare organization for seriously wounded veterans as well as frontline fighters of World War I. The NSKOV was established in 1934 and was affiliated to the Nazi Party. After Nazi Germany's defeat in World War II, the American military government issued a special law outlawing the Nazi Party and all of its branches. Known as Law number five, this denazification decree disbanded the NSKOV as with all organizations linked to the Nazi Party. The organizations taking care of the welfare for World War I veterans had to be established anew during the postwar reconstruction of both West and East Germany. The headquarters of the organization was in Kreuzberg, Berlin (at the time called the SW 68 district) and employed the architect Willy Muehlau to design cheap residential complexes for Nazi war veterans. These complexes emerged some time between the late 1920s and early 1930s and are protected according to the City of Berlin's Denkmalliste (monument list). Original vintage Soviet propaganda poster USSR - A Country of Heroes - Glory to Conquerors of Space - Great black and white group photo of Soviet astronauts and cosmonauts in uniform. The Soviet space program (Russian: ??????????? ????????? ????, Kosmicheskaya programma SSSR) comprised several of the rocket and space exploration programs conducted by the Soviet Union (USSR) from the 1930s until its collapse in 1991. Over its 60-year history, this primarily classified military program was responsible for a number of pioneering accomplishments in space flight, including the first intercontinental ballistic missile (R-7), first satellite (Sputnik 1), first animal in Earth orbit (the dog Laika on Sputnik 2), first human in space and Earth orbit (cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on Vostok 1), first woman in space and Earth orbit (cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova on Vostok 6), first spacewalk (cosmonaut Alexei Leonov on Voskhod 2), first Moon impact (Luna 2), first image of the far side of the Moon (Luna 3) and unmanned lunar soft landing (Luna 9), first space rover (Lunokhod 1), first sample of lunar soil automatically extracted and brought to Earth (Luna 16), and first space station (Salyut 1). Further notable records included the first interplanetary probes: Venera 1 and Mars 1 to fly by Venus and Mars, respectively, Venera 3 and Mars 2 to impact the respective planet surface, and Venera 7 and Mars 3 to make soft landings on these planets. The rocket and space program of the USSR, initially boosted by the assistance of captured scientists from the advanced German rocket program,[1][2] was performed mainly by Soviet engineers and scientists after 1955, and was based on some unique Soviet and Imperial Russian theoretical developments, many derived by Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, sometimes known as the father of theoretical astronautics. Sergey Korolev (also transliterated as Korolyov) was the head of the principal design group; his official title was "chief designer" (a standard title for similar positions in the USSR). Unlike its American competitor in the "Space Race", which had NASA as a single coordinating agency, the USSR's program was split among several competing design bureaus led by Korolev, Mikhail Yangel, Valentin Glushko, and Vladimir Chelomei. Fair condition, creasing, staining, tears, paper losses in margin. Country: Russia, year of printing: 1970, designer: A. Ustikov, size (cm): 59x88

Original vintage Soviet propaganda poster criticising the USA's Gunboat laws- great images of war ships with the message - Demonstrating open disregard for international laws, principles and the Charter of the United Nations, the United States sent warships to the shores of Nicaragua. This is the old politics of gunboats in a new way. The duty of all those who cherish the world is to stop the aggressor, to prevent the emergence of another “hot spot” of the planet. Excellent condition, minor crease in corner. Country: Russia, year of printing: 1985, designer: A. Sluzhenikin, size (cm): 66x49
