Lot 4415

Original vintage British World War Two poster - Careless talk may cost his life, Don't talk about aerodromes or aircraft factories - featuring a black and white photo of a smiling Royal Air Force RAF pilot against a sky blue background with the message below on an orange banner. Careless talk propaganda discouraged talking about sensitive material where it could be overheard by spies, showing either an Axis eavesdropper or depicting a death caused by such information leaking. It was also intended to prevent morale-sapping rumours from spreading. The first posters were illustrated by "Fougasse" (Cyril Bird), a comic artist. After concluding that such talk was not a serious source of intelligence, and would often be dismissed as a plant, the campaign was not increased. Very good condition, light folds, creases in top margin, small tears in left margin. Country: UK , year of printing: 1940s, designer: Unknown, size (cm): 50x33.5

Lot 4706

Original vintage propaganda poster from a collection of posters titled Fight Alcoholism! Great illustration of a stick person drinking vodka from a bottle, with bricks in the background. Message reads - I do not want such a dad! High volumes of alcohol consumption have serious negative effects on Russia's social fabric and bring political, economic and public health ramifications. Alcoholism has been a problem throughout the country's history because drinking is a pervasive, socially acceptable behaviour in Russian society and alcohol has also been a major source of government revenue for centuries. At the beginning of World War I, prohibition was introduced in the Russian Empire, limiting the sale of hard liquor to restaurants. After the Bolshevik Party came to power, they made repeated attempts to reduce consumption in the Soviet Union. However, by 1925, vodka had reappeared in state-run stores. Joseph Stalin reestablished a state monopoly to generate revenue. Soviet leaders Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brezhnev, Yuri Andropov, and Konstantin Chernenko all tried to stem alcoholism. Mikhail Gorbachev increased controls on alcohol in 1985; he attempted to impose a partial prohibition, which involved a massive anti-alcohol campaign, severe penalties against public drunkenness and alcohol consumption, and restrictions on sales of liquor. The campaign was temporarily successful in reducing per capita alcohol consumption and improving quality-of-life measures such as life expectancies and crime rates, but it was deeply unpopular among the population and it ultimately failed. Excellent condition. Country: Russia, year of printing: 1977, designer: A Rudkovich, size (cm): 52x40cm

Original vintage propaganda poster for the post-war US sponsored European Recovery Program (1948) known as the Marshall plan - ERP Inter-European Cooperation for Higher Living Standard / La Cooperation Inter-europeenne pour un niveau de vie plus eleve. Strong design by Gottfried Honegger-Lavater depicting two interlocking hands with coloured arrows pointing upwards. This design received the 5th prize in the Intra-European Cooperation for a Better Standard of Living poster competition on the theme of cooperation and economic recovery that was held by NATO in Europe for the Marshall Plan. The Marshall Plan (officially the European Recovery Program, ERP) was an American initiative passed in 1948 to aid Western Europe, in which the United States gave over $12 billion (nearly $100 billion in 2018 US dollars) in economic assistance to help rebuild Western European economies after the end of World War II. Replacing the previous Morgenthau Plan, it operated for four years beginning on April 3, 1948. The goals of the United States were to rebuild war-torn regions, remove trade barriers, modernize industry, improve European prosperity, and prevent the spread of Communism. The Marshall Plan required a reduction of interstate barriers, a dropping of many regulations, and encouraged an increase in productivity, as well as the adoption of modern business procedures. Original vintage advertising poster for a Zeppelin ride commemorating the 100th birthday of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin I-II - from 8 - 12 Juli 1938. / Konstanz am Bodensee 8-12 Juli 1938 - anläßlich des 100 Geburtstages des Grafen Ferdinand von Zeppelin I-II. Postal stamp and seal of the Zeppelin postal service. Great illustration of a Zeppelin flying over the silhouette of a city skyline on a yellow pink and blue sunset sky. Ferdinand Adolf Heinrich August Graf von Zeppelin (8 July 1838 – 8 March 1917) was a German general and later inventor of the Zeppelin rigid airships; he founded the company Luftschiffbau Zeppelin. Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH is a German company which, during the early 20th century, was a leader in the design and manufacture of rigid airships. Luftschiffbau Zeppelin manufactured many Zeppelin airships for both civilian and military use over the next few decades. However, with the rise of the Nazis in 1933, focus shifted to 'heavier than air' aircraft, due to their military superiority (though Zeppelins were used in a number of major propaganda campaigns to great effect). By the beginning of World War II demand for airships had disappeared. The last active vessel (LZ 130) was decommissioned early in the war and broken up for its aluminium. Very good condition, minor creasing, Nazi stamp with swastika, eagle and earth on the design, circular ink stamp. Country: Germany, year of printing: 1938, designer: Beelason, size (cm): 21x15.5cm

Original vintage propaganda poster from a collection of posters titled Fight Alcoholism! Illustration of a politician preaching about the dangers of alcohol while three drunk men sleep at the bottom of the podium. Lot 4411

Original vintage Vich French Anti-Communist, anti-British and anti-Semitic propaganda poster: Victory - The Great European Crusade (Victoire - La Grande Croisee Europeenne). Striking artwork by Michel Jacquot depicting a knight in armour charging against the soldier of the Soviet Red Army supported by a man with a British Pound sign on his back symbolising Churchill and a gree-faced person symbolising a Jewish person. Vichy France (French: Régime de Vichy) is the common name of the French State (État français) headed by Marshal Philippe Pétain during World War II. Evacuated from Paris to Vichy in the unoccupied "Free Zone" (zone libre) in the southern part of metropolitan France which included French Algeria, it remained responsible for the civil administration of France as well as the French colonial empire. From 1940 to 1942, while the Vichy regime was the nominal government of all of France except for Alsace-Lorraine, the Germans and Italians militarily occupied northern and south-eastern France. While Paris remained the de jure capital of France, the government chose to relocate to the town of Vichy, 360 km (220 mi) to the south in the zone libre, which thus became the de facto capital of the French State. Following the Allied landings in French North Africa in November 1942, southern France was also militarily occupied by Germany and Italy to protect the Mediterranean coastline. Petain's government remained in Vichy as the nominal government of France, albeit one that collaborated with Nazi Germany from November 1942 onwards. The government at Vichy remained there until late 1944, when it lost its de facto authority due to the Allied invasion of France and the government was compelled to relocate to the Sigmaringen enclave in Germany, where it continued to exist on paper until the end of hostilities in Europe. Good condition, folded as issued, tears and creases in top margin. Country: France, year of printing: 1941, designer: Michel Jacquot, size (cm): 117x78

Original vintage Soviet propaganda poster Work in a Revolutionary Way featuring an illustration of Lenin talking to three Soviet worker. Message reads - Communist subbotniks - precisely because of the enormous historical value that they have, show us a conscious voluntary initiative in labour productivity, a transition in the work of socialist conditions of economy and life, workers in the development add to the new labour discipline. Subbotnik and voskresnik were days of volunteer unpaid work on weekends following the October Revolution. Initially they were indeed voluntary, but gradually de facto obligatory upon announcement, as people quipped, "in a voluntary-compulsive way" (? ???????????-?????????????? ???????). The tradition is continued in modern Russia and some other former Soviet Republics. Subbotniks are mostly organized for cleaning the streets of garbage, fixing public amenities, collecting recyclable material, and other community services. The first mass subbotnik was held on April 12, 1919, at the Moscow-Sortirovochnaya railway depot of the Moscow-Kazan Railway upon the initiative of local bolsheviks. It was stated in the Resolution of the General Council of Communists of the Subraion of the Moscow-Kazan Railway and Their Adherents that "the communists and their supporters again must spur themselves on and extract from their time off still another hour of work, i.e. they must increase their working day by an hour, add it up and on Saturday devote six hours at a stretch to physical labour, thereby producing immediately a real value. Considering that communists should not spare their health and lives for the victory of the revolution, the work is conducted without pay." This subbotnik prompted Lenin to write the article The Grand Initiative, where he called subbotniks "the actual beginnings of the communism". The first all-Russian subbotnik was held on May 1, 1920, and Vladimir Lenin participated in removing building rubble in the Moscow Kremlin, an episode portrayed in a famous painting by Vladimir Krikhatsky, Lenin at the First Subbotnik, of Lenin carrying a log. Excellent condition, minor crease on margins. Country: Russia, year of printing: 1988, designer: Y. Tsarev, size (cm): 63x94

Royal diploma of King Enrique II of Castile, for a Don Sancho concerning rights in Aranda de Duero, vast single sheet manuscript document in Old Castilian on parchment [Spain (Castile, Leon), 1369-79] Single large sheet, with 60 long lines of main text above a witness-list and scribal endorsement, penwork cadels to letters in uppermost line, significant names in red or blue capitals or left in blank parchment within red or blue grounds, opening initial in red with swirling penwork, a Chi-Rho symbol in red within a blue and red roundel set within blue and red frame, the royal seal of Castile within circular text frames in blue and red painted into text between columns of witnesses, parchment turned up at foot and document intentionally pierced through this turn up and the pen flourishes of the scribal endorsement to attach twisted silken cords of blue, red, white, yellow and green, these holding in place a lead seal with the arms of Castile on one side and a seated king on the other (rubbed, but in fair condition with main details and text still discernible), several early modern endorsements on reverse, some rubbed areas of text and cockled areas of parchment (but without significant loss to text other than second part of dating year), folds from storage, overall good condition, 715+50 by 610mm. Enrique II (1334-79) is styled here as ruler of “Castiella, de tolledo, de Leon, de Gallista, de Sevilla, de Cordoba, de Murcia, de iah’en [Jaén], de algarbe, de algesiin”, and elsewhere nicknamed ‘el Fratricida’ as he killed his half-brother, Pedro ‘the Cruel’ (probably necessarily in order to protect his own safety). This act placed him on the throne as the first king of Castile and Leon from the house of Trastámara. He lead a belligerent life, going to war against Ferdinand I of Portugal and his son in law, John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster, before returning to the same conflict during the Hundred Years’ War in which he fought both the Portuguese and the English. He died in 1379 and was buried in the Capilla de los Reyes Nuevos in Toledo. This is a grand royal document, most probably intended to impress upon its viewer the majesty of the house of Trastámata, and draw attention away from the fratricidal origins of Enrique’s power (on his use of charters thus, see M.R. Obrado, ‘Simbología y propaganda política en los formularios cancillerescos de Enrique II de Castilla’, En la España medieval, 18, 1995). To that end a uniquely medieval Spanish diplomatic practise is employed here to its fullest: that of painting the royal seal into the centre of the document. Here it is placed between the columns of noble witnesses, mostly drawn from Enrique’s family, his innermost courtiers and young sons of subjugate rulers he had taken into his court as hostages, reminding the viewer of the centrality of his authority. Examples of such charters survive almost entirely in institutional ownership, and rarely appear on the market. Another issued by Pedro I in 1351 was offered by Les Enlumineres, catalogue 4 (1995), no. 32.
