Marshals of the Soviet Union set over a red banner with USSR symbolica including a red star and hammer and sickle. Photographs from left to right portray - Semyon Budyonny (1883-1973) a Soviet cavalryman, military commander during the Russian Civil War, Polish-Soviet War and World War II, and politician, who was a close political ally of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. Semyon Timoshenko (1895-1970) was a Soviet military commander, Marshal of the Soviet Union, and one of the most prominent Red Army commanders during the Second World War. Kliment Voroshilov (1881-1969), was a prominent Soviet military officer and politician during the Stalin era and served as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet, the nominal Soviet head of state, from 1953 to 1960. Grigory Kulik (1890-1950) was a Soviet military commander and served as chief of the Red Army's Main Artillery Directorate from 1937 until June 1941. Boris Shaposhnikov (1882-1945) was a Soviet military officer and theoretician, he served as the Chief of the General Staff of the Soviet Armed Forces from 1928 to 1931 and at the start of the Second World War. Shaposhnikov was one of the foremost military theorists during the Stalin era. The Minister of Food Control (1916-1921) and the Minister of Food (1939-1958) were British government ministerial posts separated from that of the Minister of Agriculture. Möge Gott Euch erleuchten, damit ihr die richtige Wahl trefft.[...] Dies ist mein erstes und letztes Wort." 1935 löste er im Abessinienkrieg den zögerlichen Emilio DeBono als Oberbefehlshaber der italienischen Invasionstruppen ab und unterwarfzusammen mit Rodolfo Graziani 1936 das bis dahin nicht kolonisierte Kaiserreich Abessinien. Dabei setzte er entgegen den Genfer Konventionen auch massiv undsystematisch Giftgas ein. Für dieses Kriegsverbrechen wurde er weder vonItalien noch von den Alliierten zur Rechenschaft gezogen. Italien gab de nEinsatz von Giftgas erst 1995 offiziell zu. Für den Sieg über Äthiopien wurde Badoglio auf VorschlagMussolinis durch König Viktor Emanuel III. zum erblichen Herzog von Addis Abebaerhoben. Das Amt des Vizekönigs überließ er kurz danach Rodolfo Graziani. 1940 war Badoglio wie Graziani, Italo Balbo und CarloFavagrossa ein entschiedener Gegner eines italienischen Kriegseintritts an derSeite Hitlerdeutschlands. Mussolini beteiligte sich jedoch am Krieg, freilicherst nachdem sich die Niederlage Frankreichs abgezeichnet hatte. Badoglio tratim Verlauf des desaströsen italienischen Feldzugs gegen Griechenland alsGeneralstabschef der Streitkräfte zurück. Sein Nachfolger wurde Ugo Cavallero. Nach der Sitzung des Großen Faschistischen Rates am 25. Juli1943 wurde Benito Mussolini gestürzt und inhaftiert. König Viktor Emanuel III.,kurz zuvor mit dem Oberbefehl über die Armee ausgestattet, setzte am 26. Juli1943 Badoglio als Ministerpräsidenten eines Kabinetts ohne faschistischeParteimitglieder ein. Auf der ersten Kabinettssitzung am 28. Juli wurde dieAuflösung der faschistischen Partei, die Entmachtung des Großen Rates und derpolitischen Gerichte sowie ein Verbot der Neugründung von Parteien für dieDauer des Krieges beschlossen. Die italienischen Rassengesetze ließ erunangetastet. Badoglio ging gegen Unruhen vor, die mit Forderungeneinhergingen, den Krieg rasch zu beenden; dazu ließ er den Belagerungszustandverhängen und Aufrührer in Internierungslager bringen. Die neue Regierung versicherte dem deutschen Bündnispartner,der Norditalien besetzt hielt, ihre Loyalität, führte jedoch ab 3. August 1943Geheimverhandlungen mit den Alliierten, welche am 10. Juli 1943 mit derEroberung Siziliens (Operation Husky) begonnen hatten. Badoglios Idee einerNeutralisierung des Landes, militärisch wie innenpolitisch, sollte sich schnellals unrealistisch erweisen: Die Alliierten wollten sich damit nichtzufriedengeben, und im Innern reorganisierten sich die alten politischenParteien und Gewerkschaften überraschend schnell. Am 3. September 1943 wurdeder Waffenstillstand von Cassibile unterzeichnet, die Verkündung ließ bis zum8. September 1943 auf sich warten. Die deutsche Wehrmacht besetzte Nord- und Mittelitalien,schloss die Stadt Rom ein und nahm etwa 800.000 italienische Soldaten gefangen;besonders in der Ägäis und in Griechenland wurden tausende italienischerSoldaten von den Deutschen getötet (Fall Achse). Mussolini wurde am Gran Sassovon deutschen Fallschirmjägern befreit und am 23. September 1943 als Chef derRepubblica Sociale Italiana (auch Repubblica di Salò) eingesetzt. Der Königfloh mit Badoglio und nur zwei Ministern über Pescara in das unbesetzteBrindisi. Auf Druck der Alliierten erfolgte die Kriegserklärung Italiens an dasDeutsche Reich zum 13. Oktober 1943. Die deutsche Propaganda nannte Badoglio einen "Verräter",seine Kriegserklärung gegen Deutschland "lächerlich".Die Alliierten fordertenvon Badoglio, die von ihnen besetzten Landesteile zu verwalten und dieFaschisten aus ihren Ämtern und Positionen zu entfernen. Badoglio handelte nurzögerlich; gleichzeitig musste er aus dem Exil zurückkehrende Antifaschisten wieden Kommunisten Palmiro Togliatti ins Kabinett aufnehmen. Nach der Befreiung Roms durch alliierte Truppen am 4. Juni1944 erzwangen die Antifaschisten am 8. Juni Badoglios Rücktritt. SeinNachfolger Ivanoe Bonomi bildete ein Kabinett aus zurückgekehrten Emigrantenund Antifaschisten und ließ die politischen Säuberungen energischer fortsetzen. 1945 wurde Badoglio wegen seiner Zusammenarbeit mit denFaschisten aus dem Senat ausgeschlossen, zwei Jahre später jedochrehabilitiert. Badoglio zog sich danach schrittweise an seinen Geburtsort imPiemont und ins Privatleben zurück. Hochbedeutender Geschenkdolch in hervorragender Qualität und aus wertvollstem Material. M
