PERE PRUNA OCERANS (Barcelona, 1904 - 1977)."Woman indoors", 1969.Oil on canvas.Signed and dated in the lower right corner.Old Sala Parés label on the back.Measurements: 73 x 92 cm; 90 x 108 cm (frame).A mainly self-taught artist, Pere Pruna completed his training at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. After beginning to exhibit in Barcelona when he was still very young, he travelled to Paris in 1921, where he was helped and guided by Picasso. In the French capital he held a successful one-man show at the Galerie Percier, and came into contact with intellectuals such as Cocteau, Drieu la Rochelle, Max Jacob and others, with whom he founded the magazine "Philosophie" in 1924. Serge Diaghilev, who visited one of his exhibitions, also asked him to create the sets and costumes for the ballet "Les matelots" in 1925. From then on, he also worked on other musical works, such as "La vie de Polichinele" (1934) and "Oriane" (1938), among others. In 1928 he won second prize in the Carnegie Institute exhibition in Pittsburg and later, on his return to Barcelona, he won other awards such as the "Montserrat seen by Catalan artists" competition (1931) and the Nonell Prize (1936). The latter was surrounded by controversy, because Pruna won it for his oil painting "El vi de Chios", for which he used a photograph published in a Parisian pornographic magazine as a model. In response to the uproar, Pruna withdrew the prize, but the jury upheld its decision. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Pruna settled in Paris and continued his international exhibition activity, most notably the exhibition organised in London in 1937. At the same time he worked for Ridruejo's propaganda services, with works such as the poster commemorating the promulgation of the Labour Force, and Eugenio d'Ors, National Head of Fine Arts, introduced him to the Spanish representation at the Venice Biennale in 1938. After the war he combined easel painting exhibitions with mural painting, a genre in which his work in the Monastery of Montserrat was particularly celebrated. In 1965 he won the City of Barcelona Prize, and three years later he was appointed academician of the Far de Sant Cristòfor. His style, centred on a graceful, stylised female figure, is based on the clear delicacy of the pink and "neoclassical" Picasso, and reveals a certain parallelism with the Italian Novencento, being fully in keeping with the classicist trend that appeared in Western art after the first wave of avant-gardism and of which his friend Cocteau was the driving force. Pruna focused on portraiture and above all on the female figure, capturing images marked by great delicacy and sober distinction. His representations are characterised by a stylised and diaphanous line, and are in tune with the return to order following the rupture that Cubism represented in France, thus linking directly with the avant-garde. Pere Pruna is currently represented in the Museum of Montserrat, where there is a space bearing his name, the MACBA in Barcelona and the Maricel Museum in Sitges, among others.

Plans for an air route between Cairo and Baghdad were originally drawn up in 1919 by Winston Churchill as secretary of state for air, in collaboration with Hugh Trenchard, marshal of the Royal Air Force. At the Cairo conference in March 1921, Churchill, now secretary of state for the colonies, reiterated the need for an imperial air network. ‘Preparations for the selection and marking of landing grounds across the Syrian Desert between Amman and Ramadi (on the Euphrates) had been made in March 1921, and in May, after aerial reconnaissance had ascertained the nature of the country, a Ford car convoy, supplied by air, was sent out to begin work. The progress made by June had firmly established the Cairo to Baghdad route for military purposes, and the regular air mail service, begun in August, was opened to the public by October … The chief strategic function of the air route was to move reinforcements between various theatres and hence to avoid expensive duplication. From the outset Trenchard imagined a single imperial air force, distributed like the navy in a number of fleets according to an overall plan, and linked by reliable air communications’ (Omissi, Air Power and Colonial Control: The Royal Air Force, 1919-1939, pp. 135-6). Major A. L. Holt (1896-1971) was a decorated former Royal Engineers officer who during the 1920s was employed by Iraq Railways and the Turkish Petroleum Company, and pioneered mechanised exploration in the region. In 1922 he was joined on an expedition to Wadi Sirhan by Harry St John Bridger Philby. His published works include ‘Some Journeys in the Syrian Desert’ (JRCAS, Vol. 10, No. 3, 1923), and ‘The Future of the North Arabian Desert’ (RGJ, Vol. 62, No. 4, October 1923). Nuri ibn Sha'lan, powerful chieftain of the Ruwallah tribe (see item 1), was the last major Arab leader to join the Arab Revolt. He was courted assiduously by T. E. Lawrence and the British military establishment, but his people's dependence on the markets of Damascus made him reluctant to declare firmly for either the Ottomans or the British, and after an encounter as late as June 1917 Lawrence concluded that practical support from the Ruwallah remained unlikely. In March 1918 Faisal instructed Nuri to open hostilities against the Ottomans and sent him payment of £25,000. Nuri's relations with the Ottomans disintegrated soon after. He declared war by August, and the next month led his forces in the Anglo-Arab advance on Damascus. (See Tauber, The Arab Movements in World War I, pp. 148-9.) Provenance: Apparently sometime in the personal collection of A. L. Holt (the lot including a large-format envelope addressed 'Major A. L. Holt, M.B.E, M.C., Iraq Railways, Baghdad, Iraq' and other indications of his ownership).

Lê Quốc Lộc was born in Tuấn Quang hamlet in Phùng Hưng Commune, Khoái Châu District, Hưng Yên Province in 1918. He studied in the lacquer department of the École des Beaux Arts de l’Indochine starting from 1936 with professor Joseph Inguimberty (1896-1971) and graduated in 1942. He then opened his own lacquer workshop located at 42 Lò Đúc Street in Hanoï along with other artists such as Phạm Hậu, Nguyễn Gia Trí, Nguyễn Văn Tỵ and Hoàng Tích Chù. Starting from August 1945, during the First Indochina War, Lê Quốc Lộc joined the Việt Minh. Between 1945 and 1946, he worked at the Department of Propaganda in North Vietnam. Later on, he was put in charge of the Painting Department at the Department of Propaganda of Military Zone 3 (1947-1954). Between 1955 and 1959, he worked at the Vietnam Arts and Crafts Association and eventually became a member of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association in 1957. After the division of Vietnam following the war, he was appointed the deputy director of the Gia Đinh (Saigon) School of Applied Arts, whose founder was Lê Văn Đệ (1906-1966) where he taught from 1959 to 1967 and contributed to the rise of new artists. In 1968, he moved back to Hanoi to work at the Vietnam Fine Arts Association until 1978. Through his career, he was awarded numerous prizes amongst which: the National Fine Arts Exhibition Award (1st Prize in 1960, 2nd Prize in 1955, 1958 and 1962); the Craft Exhibition Award of the GDR (1st Prize in 1978 and 2nd Prize in 1974); the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Art (in 2000). 2. This screen, a masterpiece by world-renowned lacquer artist Lê Quốc Lộc, is typical of the artist’s work, in the sense that the predominant colors (or tones) are red and dark brown combined with gilt. It depicts a bird’s eye-viewed animated landscape, as seen from the top of a hill, crossed by Mekong river arms. The in-depth perspective is created by a succession of grounds. In the first two ones, the artist used a gilt lacquer to depict trees, including palm trees. In the middle one, on the left, is a traditional thatched houses hamlet. Then come Mekong river arms in alternance with isthmuses. The composition may roughly be described as being divided into two parts by a diagonal going from the upper left corner to the lower right corner - thereby creating two triangular shapes - and playing with empty and full: the lower left part, a full one dominated by red tones, is mostly devoted to the village scene and to the depiction of nature; the upper right part, an empty one dominated by dark tones, mostly concentrates on the depiction of the Mekong River. This work also stands out because of its profusion of details, amidst which: clothes hanging on a line in the hamlet; sampan boats with fishermen sailing the river; walking peasants or water carriers; a silent street market scene in front of a thatched house on the lower right corner etc. Also of importance is the year during which this screen was created, i.e. 1943, a very special one for Lê Quốc Lộc as well as a very creative one. Indeed, not only was his first son (Lê Huy Văn) born that year, but also he set up his own lacquer workshop and created several masterpieces such as an almost identical screen (click HERE to see this work) and another screen depicting Phnom Penh (click HERE to see this work). 3. Recently, Lê Quốc Lộc has been highly prized and valued on the art market by knowledgeable collectors, thereby acknowledging his prominent position in the history of Vietnamese Art. Indeed, an eight-fold lacquer screen depicting Phnom Penh achieved an impressive €1,222,000 at a public auction in Paris (2021-10-21, lot 114 - click HERE to see this work). In 2020, another version of our screen fetched €357,500 at another public auction in Paris (2020-11-03, lot 176 - click HERE to see this work).
