HITLER ADOLF: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1933-45. An interesting D.S., A Hitler, two pages, folio, Berlin, 17th October 1935, on the printed stationery of Der Fuhrer und Reichskanzler, in German. The typed document concerns film censorship in the Third Reich and states, in full, 'As of late it has been variously noted that attempts have been made by individuals, organisations, professions, associations, and their press organs to influence film censorship in an impermissible fashion, thus causing great uneasiness in German cinematic creativity and severe economic harm. The assessment of a film's subject matter or plot cannot be made from the perspective of an individual profession, and the objection to a film solely because of the fact that members of a profession do evil deeds is absurd, for by contrasting good and bad the film is an artistic portrayal of the conflicts of life. Therefore the assessment of a film must be made on general philosophical and general artistic principles, but not from the perspective of an individual or a profession. For this reason, film censorship can only be carried out by one authority which provides the assurance that the examination is done from a fundamental philosophical and artistic standpoint. Even the attempt to influence it must severely upset cinematic creativity, and in view of the complications of film production processes and the great sums which must be invested in every film, great losses must be the result. In the National Socialist state only one person is always responsible for a thing. For this reason, I point out that film censorship is the exclusive responsibility of the Reich Minister for Enlightenment of the People and Propaganda, and the authorities appointed by him, and that the exertion of whatever kind of pressure on the decisions of these authorities is not permissible and is prohibited'. Signed by Hitler at the conclusion and also bearing the ink initial ('L') and date, 17th October, of an unidentified Nazi official. Together with Walther Funk (1890-1960) German Economist & Nazi official, Reich Minister for Economic Affairs 1938-45. T.L.S., Walther Funk, one page, 4to, Berlin, 16th October 1935, to Dr. [Hans] Lammers, on his personal printed stationery, in German. Funk sends Lammers a draft [i.e. the present document, before being signed by Hitler] which he states is 'already approved in principle by the Fuhrer for an authorisation on the question of film censorship to all Reichs and party authorities'. Two file holes to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature, and with various ink, pencil and stamped annotations and dates etc., including two notes in green indelible pencil again signed with the initial ('L') by an official and dated 17th October. An unusual and interesting pair of documents relating to Nazism and the cinema. VG, 2   At the time of the present document and letter Walther Funk was serving as a Secretary of State in the Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda (1933-37).   Hans Lammers (1879-1962) German Jurist & a prominent Nazi Politician. Lammers served as Chief of the Reich Chancellery from 1933-45.   Joseph Goebbels (1897-1945) German Nazi Politician, Reichsminister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda 1933-45.    The Nazis valued film as a propaganda instrument of enormous power and the interest Hitler and Goebbels took in film was not only the result of a personal fascination. The use of film as a means of propaganda had been planned by the Nazi Party as early as 1930 when the party first established a film department.
