Born in 1868, Vilde, a graduate of the Baron’s Shtiglitz’s Central School of Technical Drawing, was involved in the pre-revolutionary years with numerous artistic projects, including interior and landscape designs and regularly participated in Imperial Porcelain Manufactory’s contests. In 1906 he became the head of the graphic studio of the Manufactory and of the drawing classes. 1st-2nd century AD. A marble figure showing the torso and upper thighs of a male with military cloak at the shoulders and back, a short tunic gathered at the waist and wide belt; mounted on custom-made stand. 920 grams, 21cm including stand (8 1/4"). Fine condition. Acquired on the UK art market prior to 1985. Rose, C. Dynastic Commemoration and Imperial Portraiture in the Julio-Claudian Period, Cambridge, 1997 The draping of the cloak and the style of cuirass would suggest that this is a victorious general or emperor. It was important for the emperor to be portrayed as the conquering hero as this placed him in a similar role to that of Alexander the Great, after whom many emperors modelled themselves, but also as the protector of the Empire and the people within it. It was not just the emperor who could be portrayed in this way, but also high ranking aristocrats and senators were also depicted as victorious generals, but this use of imagery by private individuals eventually fell out of use as the Imperial family took precedence in the political sphere in the early days of the Empire. As well as the emperor other members of the Imperial family could be portrayed in this way as a means of propaganda to bolster the claim of certain individuals as heirs to the Imperial throne, such as Germanicus, great-nephew of Augustus, who was destined to rule until his untimely death.
