The Federal Government established the Santa Fe Indian School (SFIS) in 1890 to educate Native American children from tribes throughout the Southwestern United States. The purpose of creating SFIS was an attempt to assimilate the Native American children into the wider United States culture and economy. In 1975, the All Indian Pueblo Council (AIPC) was formed. It was the first Indian organization to utilize the laws in place to contract an education for their children. Eventually, the AIPC was able to leverage complete control of the school and curriculum. In 2001, with the passing of the SFIS Act, the school took ownership of the land. The school resides on the form of a trust, which is held by the nineteen Pueblo Governors of New Mexico. Original vintage WWII Propaganda Poster - Britain the Great Defender of Freedom - Featuring a dynamic illustration by James Gardner of Military planes bombing Knapsack in Germany. The message reads - "La Gran Bretana Defensora de la Libertad" (Britain the Great Defender of Freedom). Poster issued for display in Spanich speaking countries during the Second World War. During World War II the RAF bombed the Knapsack power-station several times. The first raid was a low-level daylight raid on 12 August 1941 by 54 Bristol Blenheims under the command of Wing Commander Nichol of No. 114 Squadron RAF. The Blenheims hit their targets (the Goldenberg Power Station in Knapsack and the Fortuna Power Station in Quadrath) but twelve of the Blenheims were lost during the raid, 22 percent of those that took part which was far above the sustainable loss rate of less than five. A further raid took place on the night of 2/3 October 1943 with 12 OBOE Mosquitos, and a second attack that year was another night attack on 21/22 December 1943 by 4 Mosquitos. Officially the Girl Reserves of the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) began in 1918. However, like many clubs - it evolved from many informal girl gatherings under the YWCA program and from the Patriotic League of the YWCA. The Girl Reserves sought to help girls 12-18 develop a well-balanced personality, grow physically and take on social responsibility. Original vintage WWI Propaganda Poster - In Belgium the Belgians are Hungry (En Belgique Les Belges Ont Faim). Poster designed by Theophile Alexandre Steinlen (November 10, 1859 – December 13, 1923), a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker. Born in Lausanne, Steinlen studied at the University of Lausanne before taking a job as a designer trainee at a textile mill in Mulhouse in eastern France. In his early twenties he was still developing his skills as a painter when he and his new wife were encouraged by the painter François Bocion to move to the artistic community in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. Once there, Steinlen was befriended by the painter Adolphe Willette who introduced him to the artistic crowd at Le Chat Noir that led to his commissions to do poster art for the cabaret owner/entertainer, Aristide Bruant and other commercial enterprises. The poster image depicts a group of six Belgian people standing holding pails. They include a woman wearing a black shawl, standing centre, and an old man with a long moustache in the background. This sits next to text which translates to - Artistic tombola to raise funds for feeding the people of Belgium. The League of Nations Union LNU was formed by the League of Free Nations Association and League of Nations Society as a peace movement in 1918 based on the League of Nations (1920-1946); it was replaced by the United Nations Association UNA in 1948. First translates roughly to “Message from the Führer-Headquarters : Today an explosives attack was launched to eliminate the Führer. He suffered only light burns & bruises and was able to take up work immediately afterwards. He had a long conference with the Duce. Several Generals & Admirals sustained injuries.” ...
