The title is set against a yellow background and held within a black border, with images of the six Allied flags (Serbian, French, Russian, Belgian, Japanese and a British Red Ensign) placed on either side of the title, behind a crest which features the motto of the Order of the Garter surrounding a Union Flag, topped with a crown. Printed by Andrew Reid & Co., Ltd., Newcastle-on-Tyne. Tasked with boosting enlistment in the armed forces, the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee occupied a central place in the government’s wartime communications machinery. Although the technology to enable the relatively inexpensive mass production of high quality images had been in existence for over a century, the First World War saw the first extensive use of posters for propaganda purposes. The Parliamentary Recruiting Committee (PRC) was a thirty member body organized by political party organizers, under the supervision of the War Office, with the express aim of aiding the raising of troop numbers in Britain’s volunteer army. The main modes of appeal were through mass recruiting rallies and through posters and pamphlets that encouraged enlistment. Within a few weeks of the outbreak of the war the designs of poster began to incorporate striking graphic images. Some 200 different posters were produced and distributed by the PRC over the course of the War. War posters were intended to be ephemeral and never meant to be archival or historical documents. Yet, because of the content of the messages they projected they have become an important resource by which we can today explore the mind set of those who believed passionately in the rightness of the cause and the necessity to wage War between 1914 and 1918. Good condition, tear on top margin, folds and faint creases. Country: UK, year of printing: 1910s, designer: Unknown, size (cm): 15x81 (Horizontal)

Printers, Sir Joseph Causton & Sons. Limited, London. Through appeals such as this and by offering relatively high interest rates—5 percent by 1917—Britain was able to finance much of its war effort. These loans proved to be a heavy burden on the postwar economy, however, and contributed to the decline of British power and prosperity in the decades after the war. Great design by Henry Lee Jr, showing a train and its locomotive crossing a bridge at full speed with the text printed above the illustration and inside the bridge's arch against a yellow background. This poster was published by Charles Mather, a Chicago printer, towards the end of the "The Roaring 1920s, when jobs were plentiful, and a movement known as Welfare Capitalism emerged, in which employers countered the grievances of labor unions and socialists by voluntarily offering higher wages, health insurance, reduced hours, and paid vacations in exchange for higher productivity and improved employee loyalty. Mather recognized the movement as a chance to expand his business by selling factory owners subscriptions to his poster series. He had seen the success of the government's propaganda poster campaign during WWI and applied the same advertising techniques, working instead with corporations striving to develop their employees. Mather sought out artists such as Willard Frederick Elmes, Hal Depuy, and Henry Lee, Jr to create posters with bold graphics and simple, direct messages. Employers could take their pick from a catalogue of posters covering such workplace topics as practical jokes, fire prevention, laziness, accountability, and rumor spreading. Mather provided over 300 unique posters over the course of seven years, until the stock market crash of October 1929, when employers no longer had extra funds to spend on motivational material. Printed in USA by Mather & Company, Chicago, Illinois. Fair condition, small paper losses in margins, scratches and marks, small tears and faint foxing, backed on board. Country: USA, year of printing: 1929, designer: Henry Lee, Jr., size (cm): 112x91

Broadside: Protest against the British Government. Large folio sheet, 25" x 30", b/w wood engraved illustrations and border in the shape of a harp. (1)American Fenian propaganda published in Philadelphia by Prinsteller William Smith, probably in the 1860s. It features an imaginary portrait of Robert Emmett and an honor roll of prominent Fenians, along with a stirring text comparing the Repeal movement with the American Revolution. On the verso is a large wood engraving of a pretty girl. I was told that his image was meant to camouflage the incendiary material on the other side. A few stains at top. Good condition overall. (1)
